Aero-Thermal Characterization of Accelerating and Diffusing Passages Downstream of Rotating Detonation Combustors

Cycle benefits of rotating detonation engines show up to five percentage points of efficiency gain for low-pressure ratio engines. An optimal integration between the combustor and the turbine needs to be guaranteed to realize this potential gain. The rotating detonation combustor (RDC) exhausts transonic flow with shocks rotating at frequencies ranging from a few to tens of kilohertz depending on the number of present waves. Hence, the turbine design requires precise knowledge of the fluctuations and losses downstream of the combustor. This paper focuses on the quantification of fluctuations and losses for accelerating and diffusing passages. The analysis of the combustor is performed via reactive unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations. The unsteady RANS equations are solved via CFD++ from Metacomp with a one-step reaction mechanism for an H2-air mixture. The resolving of the boundary layer is achieved with a structured mesh of around 36 million cells. Inlet pressure of 10 bar and two different back pressures are applied to the combustor to model the interconnection with downstream turbines. Finally, we present and assess a methodology to reduce the computational time to model these passages ten times.

Convergence of micro-geochemistry and micro-geomechanics towards understanding proppant shale rock interaction: A Caney shale case study in southern Oklahoma, USA

As a direct outcome of economic development coupled with an increase in population, global energy demand will continue to rise in the coming decades. Although renewable energy sources are increasingly investigated for optimal production, the immediate needs require focus on energy sources that are currently available and reliable, with a minimal environmental impact; the efficient exploration and production of unconventional hydrocarbon resources is bridging the energy needs and energy aspirations, during the current energy transition period. The main challenges are related to the accurate quantification of the critical rock properties that influence production, their heterogeneity and the multiscale driven physico-chemical nature of rock–fluid interactions. A key feature of shale reservoirs is their low permeability due to dominating nanoporosity of the clay-rich matrix. As a means of producing these reservoirs in a cost-effective manner, a prerequisite is creation of hydraulic fracture networks capable of the highest level of continued conductivity. Fracturing fluid chemical design, formation brine geochemical composition, and rock mineralogy all contribute to swelling-induced conductivity damage. The Caney Shale is an organic-rich, often calcareous mudrock. Many studies have examined the impact that clay has on different kinds of shale productivity but there is currently no data reported on the Caney Shale in relation to horizontal drilling; all reported data on the Caney Shale is on vertical wells which are shallow, compared to an emerging play that is at double the depth. Here, in this work we develop geochemical–geomechanical integration of rock properties at micro-and nanoscales that can provide insights into the potential proppant embedment and its mitigation. The novel methodology amalgamates the following: computed X-ray tomography, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, micro-indentation, and Raman spectroscopy techniques. Here, our results show that due to the multiscale heterogeneity in the Caney Shale, these geochemical and structural properties translate into a variation in mechanical properties that will impact interaction between the proppant and the host shale rock.

Enhancing Interlayer Charge Transport of Two-Dimensional Perovskites by Structural Stabilization via Fluorine Substitution

Two-dimensional lead-halide perovskites provide a more robust alternative to three-dimensional perovskites in solar energy and optoelectronic applications due to increased chemical stability afforded by interlayer ligands. At the same time, the ligands create barriers for interlayer charge transport, reducing device performance. Using a recently developed ab initio simulation methodology, we demonstrate that ligand fluorination can enhance both hole and electron mobility by 1–2 orders of magnitude. The simulations show that the enhancement arises primarily from improved structural order and reduced thermal atomic fluctuations in the system rather than increased interlayer electronic coupling. Arising from stronger hydrogen bonding and dipolar interactions, the higher structural stability decreases the reorganization energy that enters the Marcus formula and increases the charge transfer rate. The detailed atomistic insights into the electron and hole transfer in layered perovskites indicate that the use of interlayer ligands that make the overall structure more robust is beneficial simultaneously for chemical stability and charge transport, providing an important guideline for the design of new, efficient materials.

NWChem: Past, present, and future

Specialized computational chemistry packages have permanently reshaped the landscape of chemical sciences by providing tools to support and guide the experimental effort and for prediction of chemical and materials properties. In this regard, a special role has been played by electronic structure packages where complex chemical and materials processes can be modeled using first-principle-driven methodologies. Over the last few decades, the rapid development of computing technologies and a tremendous increase in computational power has offered a unique chance to study complex chemical transformations using sophisticated and predictive many-body techniques to describe correlated behavior of electrons in molecular and condensed phase systems at different levels of theory. In enabling these simulations, a critical role has been played by novel parallel algorithms capable of taking advantage of computational resources to address polynomial scaling of electronic structure methods. NWChem was among the first electronic structure codes that focused on delivering scalable performance for electronic structure simulations. Herein, we briefly review the NWChem suite of computational codes including its history, design principles, parallel tools, current capabilities, outreach and outlook.

Technical Specification Surveillance Interval Extension Using Self-Diagnostics

As part of the Light Water Reactor Sustainability program, an ongoing research effort is being conducted on technical specifications surveillance interval extension of digital equipment in nuclear power plants. The research team is led by Idaho National Laboratory and includes Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Technology Resources, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory. This research focuses on developing methods for applying the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)–approved guidance to implement a licensee-controlled, risk-informed surveillance frequency change program in digital instrumentation and control (I&C) systems that include self-diagnostics and online monitoring (OLM) capabilities. Although approved methods exist for extending technical specifications (TS) surveillance test intervals (STIs) for general equipment, including analog I&C equipment, gaps remain in technology and guidance on crediting newer digital equipment’s internal self-diagnostics and OLM characteristics. Previous research described a general methodology for crediting internal self-diagnostics for extending surveillance test intervals. The methodology used self-diagnostics to detect—and credited recovery from—failure. Self-diagnostics were also applied for performance monitoring during the extended surveillance interval. This report discusses the status of recent activities to evaluate the previously developed methodology using a pilot study. Although both a utility partner for a pilot study and a specific digital asset were identified in FY2020, delays in obtaining proprietary information resulted in a limited ability to fully evaluate the methodology, and further interactions were complicated by the COVID pandemic. Therefore, at that time, the use of public-domain information—along with current processes for surveillance interval extension through a surveillance frequency control program—identified the need to fully assess diagnostic coverage as part of the pilot study. Furthermore, self-diagnostics were also identified as a potential option to replace the drift analyses conducted as part of current STI extension procedures. In FY2022, the project was reconstituted with the industry partner, and information and data were made available by the industry partner to the research team for review. The shared information included failure event descriptions and data for a digital I&C system since its implementation, as well as recent STI extension interval reports developed by the utility partner on that digital I&C system. This report presents an evaluation of this information and data and describes an application of the proposed methodology cited above. The methodology seeks to take advantage of the self-diagnostics and OLM capabilities to reduce risk or reduce the level of qualitative monitoring assessment needed to perform a risk-informed STI extension using existing NRC approved guidance or both. Addressing these issues of STI extension by crediting self-diagnostics is likely to result in benefits for current and future nuclear power plant (NPP) operations, including lowering the barriers to adoption of digital I&C systems and increasing cost savings by deferring or eliminating unneeded preventive maintenance (tasks or checks or activities). Specifically, self-diagnostic and OLM capabilities of newer digital equipment being installed in non-safety and safety applications are designed to detect failures, provide early warning of potential failures, and notify plant operators to take appropriate action to reduce out of service (OOS) time thus protecting safety margins. Moreover, the equipment is expected to provide information that time-related operational degradation is identified early to ensure timely and planned corrective actions instead of a reactive and unplanned approach ahead of an extended-surveillance interval.

SEMI-EMPIRICAL MODELING OF IRRADIATION-INDUCED DIMENSIONAL CHANGE IN H-451 NUCLEAR GRAPHITE

Nuclear graphite has been used as a moderator material in nuclear reactor designs dating back to the first reactor to reach criticality, Chicago Pile 1, in 1942. In addition, it is anticipated to be used in the conceptual Generation four (GenIV) Molten-salt reactors (MSRs) and the High-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTRs). The macroscopic dimensional change observed in irradiated nuclear graphite is a property change of significant importance. Largely, volumetric change provides valuable insight into the in-service lifetime of graphite components used in nuclear reactors. The dimensional change behavior varies amongst each grade of nuclear graphite due to processing techniques and the resulting microstructure. In this work, historic data for nuclear graphite H-451 is revisited. A semi-empirical methodology is proposed to describe the dimensional change behavior as a function of temperature for nuclear graphite H-451. The turnaround dose, or when there is a reversal of the dimensional change from contraction to expansion, is proposed to be a thermally activated process and thus can be described by an Arrhenius model. On the atomic scale, H-451 is sp2-bonded carbon atoms with some degree of disorder regardless of orientation. Towards that end, the activation energy is assumed to be a constant irrespective of orientation.

Regulatory Treatment of Low Frequency External Events under a Risk-Informed Performance-Based Licensing Pathway

Significant efforts are underway to develop and implement a risk-informed performance-based licensing framework for advanced reactors built on the establishment of an affirmative safety case. Such approaches offer the benefits of increased flexibility regarding key design and licensing decisions based on a detailed assessment and understanding of plant risk. These methods include the comprehensive analysis of scenarios that have historically been addressed through conservative and deterministic licensing analysis approaches, such as the evaluation of event sequences at frequencies of occurrence beyond the design basis. While the detailed analysis of low frequency events provides insights that can help justify alternative treatments to past conservatism, the findings are dependent on the quality and confidence associated with the analyses. The assessment of external hazards presents a unique challenge, as their potential frequency of occurrence, especially of large magnitude events, is inherently uncertain given the long return periods in question. The current project seeks to further explore the regulatory treatment of low frequency external events as part of a risk-informed performance-based framework. The goals are to identify the benefits and challenges of such approaches for advanced reactor vendors and to aid in the development of consistent and appropriate methodologies. As part of this effort, the current report summarizes initial project findings, with a focus on the evaluation of the seismic hazard. This includes an exploration of the implementation of a risk-informed performance-based approach through an example analysis. Based on the identified challenges associated with the probabilistic treatment of low frequency event sequences, additional performance-based methods were explored as complementary tools for demonstrating regulatory compliance. The report highlights key challenges and opportunities associated with the methods and outlines recommendations and future activities to assist with their implementation.
