Multi-millijoule hollow-core fiber compression of short-wave infrared pulses to a single cycle

Approaches for efficient pulse compression can enable dramatic increases in the available peak power, as well as enable the generation of isolated attosecond X-ray pulses. Achieving high compression ratios for longer wavelength drivers has, however, been challenging. We present the compression of few-cycle 2.1 µm central wavelength short-wave infrared laser pulses to 6.9 fs with 2.35 mJ pulse energy at a 10 kHz repetition rate. Electric field resolved measurements reveal a single cycle light field oscillation. With a carrier-envelope-phase stability of 131 mrad and average power fluctuations below 1 %, the system constitutes an excellent light source for strong-field experiments and attosecond physics.

Graupel and Hail Identification Algorithm for the Dual-frequency Precipitation Radar (DPR) on the GPM Core Satellite

Precipitation consists of many types of hydrometeors, such as raindrops, ice crystals, graupel, and hail. Due to their impacts, graupel and hail (GH) have received particular attention in the literature. Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) dual-frequency radar (DPR) has proved to be a very reliable system for global precipitation retrievals. This paper aims to develop a GH identification algorithm for GPM DPR. This algorithm is constructed using a precipitation type index (PTI) defined for DPR. The PTI is effective in separating hydrometeor types and is calculated using measurements of reflectivity, dual-frequency ratio, and storm top height data. The output of the algorithm is a Boolean product representing the existence of graupel or hail along with the vertical profile for each Ku- and Ka-band matched footprint. Cross validation is performed with the Weather Service Radar (WSR-88D) network over continental United States as well as during the Remote sensing of Electrification, Lightning, and Mesoscale/Microscale Processes with Adaptive Ground Observations (RELAMPAGO) experiment. Evaluation of the GH identification algorithm is performed on a global basis, which illustrates promising comparisons with the global lightning and hail precipitation maps generated using radar and radiometer.

Big Area Additive Manufacturing Engineering Development, Process Trials, and Composite Core Fabrication (CRADA NFE-17-06827 Final Report)

Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has worked with Raytheon to develop and test the materials necessary to produce a moderately sized boat using Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM). This Phase 2 project focused on printing and testing the components of the boat designed by Raytheon. This involved collaborating on boat design, printing the boat, testing surface coatings, and assembling the boat.

Scientific Development of Core Block and Monolith Materials (FY2020 Progress)

This report presents the status of an effort to investigate welding and joining techniques for microreactor monolith structural materials. Previously reported results have demonstrated the potential to tier weld sub-scale components using electron beam welding. Tier welding has been investigated on larger scale test articles, and results indicate that tier welding is not feasible for larger components due to the penetration depth that is required. Additional techniques to produce full length parts have been examined, including diffusion bonding and gundrilling. Evaluations of these techniques are ongoing, and have shown early success on sub-scale components. These results indicate that while issues still exist for manufacturing microreactor structures, these challenges are better understood and solutions are in development.
