Constraining neutrino oscillation and interaction parameters with the NOvA Near Detector and Far Detector data using Markov Chain Monte Carlo

This thesis reports a constraint of the neutrino oscillation parameters $\Delta m^{2}_{32}$, $\sin^2 \theta_{23}$, and $\delta_{CP}$ using the NuMI Off-Axis $\nu$ Appearance (NOvA) experiment's Near Detector (ND) data and Far Detector (FD) fake data set simultaneously. This thesis also reports a constraint on NOvA's systematic uncertainty model solely with its Near Detector data. The Hamiltonian Monte Carlo algorithm is used to estimate Bayesian Credible Intervals for the oscillation and interaction parameters. The $1\sigma$ Credible Intervals for $\sin^2 \theta_{23}$ are $(0.44, 0.512)$ $\cup$ $(0.536, 0.56)$, for $\Delta m^{2}_{32}$ $(2.41 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2,\ 2.52 \times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2)$, and for $\delta_{CP}$ $(0.74\pi,\ 1.1\pi)$ $\cup$ $(1.38\pi,\ 1.58\pi)$. The statistical power of the ND data constrains NOvA's interaction parameters, while the FD fake data constrains the oscillation parameters. This is the first analysis within NOvA to constrain the ND and FD prediction sim ultaneously, and to investigate the neutrino interaction modeling in the context of constraining the oscillation parameters. To constrain the ND data requires a sophisticated understanding of the neutrino interaction modeling and its uncertainties. The interested reader is advised to focus on Chapters 4 and 6, which discuss the ND selection, uncertainties, and ND-only fits to data. The reader interested in oscillation parameter constraints will find this in Chapter 7.

Depletion Chain Simplification With Pseudo-Nuclides to Model Decay Effects

This work introduces the novel usage of pseudo-nuclides to model decay effects which are otherwise absent from simplified depletion libraries. Pseudo-nuclides are artificial nuclides which, when added to a simplified depletion library, can preserve quantities of interest such as decay energy release or decay photon activity which are otherwise significantly under-predicted by simplified libraries. Several dozen pseudo-nuclides are capable of accurately modeling decay effects of hundreds of short-lived radionuclides. The computational resources needed to model the decay effects in depletion systems with simplified depletion libraries with pseudo-nuclides are significantly less than those needed when using simplified depletion libraries without pseudo-nuclides. When compared to the similar method of decay heat precursors for a given system, pseudo-nuclides allow for smaller depletion libraries to be generated because of their ability to more accurately model the fission product irradiation effect on decay heat.

ANTARES: a new IRSN computational chain for safety analysis

Since some years, the IRSN has developed a new project to simulate accurately the interaction between neutronic and thermal hydraulic phenomena. This project called ANTARES (Advanced Neutronics and Thermal-hydraulic for the Analysis of Reactor Safety) couples the thermal hydraulic code CATHARE-3 with the 3D neutronic nodal code PARCS. The purpose of this project is to take the advantage of the complementary of these 2 codes, by the knowledge of the 3D core power distribution in CATHARE-3 (computed by PARCS) and improving the thermal hydraulic boundaries conditions in PARCS. In this way, the IRSN diversifies and enlarges its available tools to perform safety analysis with improved accuracy. The current technique usually adopted in France for the safety demonstrations for Reactivity Insertion Accident (RIA) is the so-called 'conservative' approach, which consists of reducing all the feedback (Doppler and moderator effects) and in modifying some physical quantities in such a way to increase a power peak. For this reason, these facilities ('penalties') have been implemented in ANTARES. In this paper we will give two examples of accidental transients that can be simulated with ANTARES: a Main Steam Line Break (MSLB) and an inadvertent boron dilution event. (authors)

US critical materials strategy: The importance of innovation in obtaining supply chain security

Critical raw materials (CRMs) and/or critical minerals and materials (CMMs) are metals, metal groups, and non-metallic minerals essential for the many modern technologies, including wind turbine, electric vehicles and energy storage systems. Different countries have slightly different metrics for determining criticality. However, broadly speaking, the European Union (EU) and United States (US)both define them as materials that reach or exceed thresholds for both economic importance and supply risk. Furthermore, both organizations have implemented instruments, such as the EU's 2024 Critical Raw Materials Act and the US Department of Energy's (DOE) Critical Minerals and Materials Strategy, to facilitate research and development of CRM/CMM ranging from mineral deposit development to geometallurgy to separations to advanced manufacturing. This talk is aimed at an EU audience to explain the DOE CMM strategy and how it compares to the steps taken by the EU to facilitate progress. Furthermore, this talk takes a geology-centric approach on the challenges geoscientists face and how their roles may change in the future.
