CTF Validation and Verification: Version 4.4

Coolant-Boiling in Rod Arrays- Two Fluids (COBRA-TF) is a thermal/hydraulic (T/H) simulation code designed for light water reactor (LWR) analysis. It uses a two-fluid, three-field (i.e., fluid film, fluid drops, and vapor) modeling approach. Both subchannel and 3D Cartesian forms of nine conservation equations are available for LWR modeling. The code was originally developed by Pacific Northwest Laboratory in 1980 and has been used and modified by several institutions over the last several decades. COBRA-TF is also used at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) by the Reactor Dynamics and Fuel Modeling Group (RDFMG) and has been improved, updated, and subsequently became the CTF. One part of the improvement process includes validating the methods in CTF. This document seeks to provide a certain level of certainty and confidence in the predictive capabilities of the code for the scenarios it was designed to model—rod bundle geometries with operating conditions that are representative of prototypical pressurized water reactor (PWR)s and boiling water reactor (BWR)s in both normal and accident conditions. This is done by modeling a variety of experiments that simulate these scenarios and then presenting a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results that demonstrates the accuracy to which CTF is capable of capturing specific quantities of interest.

Verification and Validation of the New MCNP6.3 Criticality Features [Slides]

This presentation touches on a separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. Here, we look at new optional features of the MCNP6.3 code with Fission-matrix-based options, Convergence and population testing, and Automated acceleration of the fission source additionally Doppler Broadening Resonance Correction. Also touched on are validation benchmarks: criticality, crit_expanded, and Rossi-α. All the new MCNP6.3 options give statistically equivalent results and either provide a reduction or no change in computational cost. We consider giving these new features a try and using them for all criticality calculations.

Verification and Performance Impact of the New Parallel MCNP6.3 Particle Track Output Capability for Subcritical Multiplication Simulations [Slides]

A separate MCNP6.3 V&V document reports on all the default calculations for all test suites. This report does not include the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite. After some additional clean-up and finalizing the post-processing and documentation steps, the subcritical multiplication benchmark suite will be released in the next version of our vnvstats repository. We tested the new HDF5 PTRAC feature in MCNP6.3 and found encouraging outcomes. Identical results coming out of the simulation with respect to the legacy PTRAC results. The overall runtime for all simulations is reduced by ~20% with the new HDF5 PTRAC capability. We consider giving the new HDF5 PTRAC features a try and using it for all subcritical multiplication and any other relevant (PTRAC) calculations.

Alternative Source Verification for the NB5 Beamline

This report details the calculation and comparison of secondary neutron sources for the purpose of performing NB5 velocity selector shielding calculations without relying on the primary HB4 source and the use of a modified MCNP code to run the full model.

DC Arc-Flash Safety for 1,500VDC: Methodology, Verification, and Codifying

This project aimed to address critical gaps in understanding arc flash phenomena in commercially operating photovoltaic (PV) plants. Motivated by the global growth of PV systems and the associated safety risks, the research sought to enhance knowledge, improve incident energy prediction models, and contribute to the overall safety and reliability of PV installations.

L4-3 Developing DOE M441.1-1 Compliant Container Components: Filter Cup Experimental Fixture Test Data Verification

This document serves to provide technical documentation and justification for using the Filter Cup Experimental Fixture (FCEP) for filter efficiency and pressure drop testing in the Enhanced Filter Test System (EFTS). This document assumes that the reader has prior knowledge related to both of these systems, as well as the SAVY-4000® nuclear material container series filter technology.

Universal Input-Output Model of GFM Functions and Data-Driven Verification Methods

An overarching goal of the UNiversal Interoperability for grid-Forming Inverters (UNIFI) Consortium is to develop vendor agnostic specifications and guidelines that ensure interoperability of gridforming (GFM) inverter-based resources (IBRs) without requiring vendors or system operators to reveal proprietary information. These UNIFI principles and specifications are envisioned to apply to a wide range of technologies and systems. The initial work on the UNIFI principles and specifications has focused on performance requirements and high-level aspirational principles outlined in [1]. Going forward, a key question is how to translate such high-level requirements and principles into rigorous specifications that can be enforced and validated for a wide range of IBRs.

Baseline Characterization Database Verification Report - NBG-18 Billet 635-14

The purpose of this Engineering Calculations and Analysis Report is to present the data being collected in the Baseline Graphite Characterization program, which is directly tasked with supporting the Idaho National Laboratory’s (INL’s) research and development efforts on the Next Generation Nuclear Plant (NGNP)/Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR)/Advanced Reactor Technology (ART). This program is populating a comprehensive database that will reflect the baseline properties of nuclear-grade graphite regarding individual grade, billet, and position within individual billets. The physical and mechanical property information being collected will be transferred to the NGNP Data Management and Analysis System (NDMAS), and from that database will help populate handbook of property data available to member nations of the Generation IV International Forum (GIF).

Experimental Verification of Integrability in a Danilov-Nagaitsev Lattice using Machine Learning

In non-linear optics, achieving integrability can enhance the dynamic aperture in storage rings. We analyze turn-by-turn phase-space data from our Danilov-Nagaitsev lattice implementation at Fermilab's Integrable Optics Test Accelerator using machine learning. \textit{AI Poincar\'e} estimates conserved quantities from experimental data without prior knowledge of the invariant structure, showing qualitative agreement with theoretical predictions. Additionally, one of the two learned invariants exhibits comparable or better conservation compared to known theoretical expressions.

SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego Verification Manual (V.5.20)

The SIERRA Low Mach Module: Fuego, henceforth referred to as Fuego, is the key element of the ASC fire environment simulation project. The fire environment simulation project is directed at characterizing both open large-scale pool fires and building enclosure fires. Fuego represents the turbulent, buoyantly-driven incompressible flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, combustion, soot, and absorption coefficient model portion of the simulation software. Sierra/PMR handles the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.

Using MPMD coupling, Scefire and Nalu handle the participating-media thermal radiation mechanics. This project is an integral part of the SIERRA multi-mechanics software development project. Fuego depends heavily upon the core architecture developments provided by SIERRA for massively parallel computing, solution adaptivity, and mechanics coupling on unstructured grids.
