NWAL Validation Report for U Assay by Potentiometric Titration (Modified Davies and Gray Technique) and U and PU Assay by Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry

SRNL Sensing & Metrology, previously Analytical Laboratory, is a member of the IAEA Network of Analytical Laboratories for Nuclear Material Measurement that is qualified to provide Uranium and Plutonium isotopic analysis of nuclear materials by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry. As part of the membership, SRNL participated in the 2019 Nuclear Material Round Robin to maintain the qualification to provide isotopic analysis. SRNL also participated with the additional intent to qualify Uranium Assay by Potentiometric Titration (Davies and Gray method) and Uranium and Plutonium Isotope Dilution by Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry as part of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s Network of Analytical Laboratories. The proficiency test exercise was conducted by the Office of Safeguards Analytical Services, Department of Safeguards.

Instrumented Photovoltaic Modules for Environmental Characterization and Simulation Model Validation

Photovoltaic modules are subjected to various mechanical stressors in their deployment environments, ranging from installation handling to wind and snow loads. Damage incurred during these mechanical events has the potential to initiate subsequent degradation mechanisms, reducing useful module lifespan. Thus, characterizing the mechanical state of photovoltaic modules is pertinent to the development of reliable packaging designs. In this work, photovoltaic modules with strain gauges directly incorporated into the module laminate were fabricated and subjected to mechanical loading to characterize internal strains within the module when under load. These experimental measurements were then compared against results obtained by high-fidelity finite-element simulations. The simulation results showed reasonable agreement in the strain values over time; however, there were large discrepancies in the magnitudes of these strains. Both the instrumentation technique and the finite-element simulations have areas where they can improve. These areas of improvement have been documented. Despite the observed discrepancies between the experimental and simulated results, the module instrumentation proved to be a useful gauge in monitoring and characterizing the mechanical state. With some process improvements, this method could potentially be applied to other environments that a photovoltaic module will encounter in its lifetime that are known to cause damage and degrade performance.

Evaluation of erosion potential of bio-based multicomponent blendstocks using experimentally-validated computational fluid dynamics

The optimization of the fuel-engine interface and associated performance is a significant goal for CoOptima and the industry. The strategic driver for fuel-engine optimization is clear: diesel optimization can significantly reduce emissions including NOx, particulate matter, and CO2 emissions. Previous evaluations of ethanol and diesel blends raised significant concerns with fuel injector erosion using ethanol blends. While Sylvatex’s technology can use ethanol, it also utilizes a surfactant and water to compatibilize and modify ethanol blends, thereby controlling its impact in diesel engines. The results from the project will (1) provide important insights into complex fuels and erosion, which will be used to design additional, improved formulations; and (2) expand capabilities of Argonne’s cavitation-induced erosion risk assessment (CIERA) tool to model multi-component systems, furthering Co-Optima objectives.

Final Design for Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) with Absorbers to Provide Validation Benchmarks for Y-12 Electrorefining Facility

One of the main goals of the Thermal/Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) project is to use existing Nuclear Criticality Safety Program (NCSP) assets to create critical experiment plutonium and uranium test beds for materials important to criticality safety that have insufficient benchmark evaluations. The plutonium test bed experiments were completed in 2018 and are published in the 2020 edition of the International Criticality Safety Benchmark Evaluation Project (ICSBEP) Handbook. The uranium test bed assemblies were measured in 2020, with benchmark preparation underway.

Field Validation of a Building Operating System Platform

The U.S General Services Administration's (GSA's) Green Proving Ground program, in partnership with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. completed a large pilot study of an Energy Management Information Systems (EMIS) with Automated System Optimization (ASO). Four test bed facilities, each with different building characteristics and systems, were chosen for the implementation of cloud-based EMIS with ASO. Depending on functionality, this tool can be extremely effective in energy management and energy optimization in buildings. The capabilities evaluated in the pilot ranged from energy savings and energy consumption predictions to evaluations of user acceptance, operability, and ease of installation. This report presents the methodology, lessons learned and best practices, and deployment recommendations for the GSA's portfolio of commercial office space, comprising more than 8,500 properties.
