Differing Air Traffic Controller Responses to Similar Trajectory Prediction Errors: An Interrupted Time-Series Analysis of Controller Behavior

A Human-In-The-Loop simulation was conducted in January of 2013 in the Airspace Operations Laboratory at NASAs Ames Research Center. The simulation airspace included two en route sectors feeding the northwest corner of Atlantas Terminal Radar Approach Control. The focus of this paper is on how uncertainties in the studys trajectory predictions impacted the controllers ability to perform their duties. Of particular interest is how the controllers interacted with the delay information displayed in the meter list and data block while managing the arrival flows. Due to wind forecasts with 20-knot over-predictions and 20-knot under-predictions, delay value computations included errors of similar magnitude, albeit in opposite directions. However, when performing their duties in the presence of these errors, did the controllers issue clearances of similar magnitude, albeit in opposite directions?

Trajectory Design of the Lucy Mission to Explore the Diversity of the Jupiter Trojans

Lucy, NASA’s next Discovery-class mission, will explore the diversity of the Jupiter Trojan asteroids. The Jupiter Trojans are thought to be remnants of the early solar system that were scattered inward when the gas giants migrated to their current positions as described in the Nice model. There are two stable subpopulations, or “swarms,” captured at the Sun-Jupiter L4 and L5 regions. These objects are the most accessible samples of what the outer solar system may have originally looked like. Lucy will launch in 2021 and will visit five Trojans, including one binary system. This paper discusses the target selection process, including a description of “alternate Lucys” that were ultimately passed over in favor of the final design. The mathematics of the trajectory optimization are also discussed.

Trajectory Simulation for Air Traffic Management Employing a Multirotor Urban Air Mobility Aircraft Model

This paper describes a point-mass model of a multirotor electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft designed to carry up to five passengers and a pilot. The model employs thrust, thrust vector angle and bank angle as controls, which are computed in part using the acceleration, heading-angle rate, and flight-path-angle rate generated by control systems in response to speed, heading angle, and flight-path angle commands. The equations of motion are integrated forward in time using the controls needed for following the desired vertical climb/descent and speed profiles, and horizontal path and cruise speed in the presence of wind to generate the flight trajectory.

Copernicus Spacecraft Trajectory Design and Optimization Program

Copernicus is a spacecraft trajectory design and optimization application developed at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Copernicus is written in Fortran and uses many features of the latest language standards. The tool is used for a wide range of projects at NASA, including the upcoming Artemis missions to flight test the Orion spacecraft and then return humans to the Moon. This presentation gives a brief overview of the software, its history, how it was designed, and how it is used.

NASA ATD-2 Trajectory Option Set Prototype Capability for Rerouting Departures in Metroplex Airspace

This paper describes NASA’s Airspace Technology Demonstration 2 (ATD-2) Phase 3 prototype capability that is being tested in the North Texas region through summer 2021. For the first time, a shared Decision Support Tool (DST) provides opportunities for participating Flight Operators (FOs) and Air Traffic Controllers (ATCs) to coordinate using a Trajectory Option Set (TOS). When the metroplex airspace is impacted by demand/capacity imbalances, TOS enables departure flights to be rerouted to alternative departure routes with less surface delay.

Trajectory design for the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission

This paper describes the analysis and design evolution of the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter trajectory from launch to end-of-mission. The mission uses a combination of propulsive maneuvers and aerobraking techniques to deliver the orbiter to a low-altitude frozen orbit at Mars. The launch/arrival space for the 2005 Earth-Mars opportunity will be described as well as the particular launch strategy chosen for this mission. Details of the aerobraking profile will be provided. Finally, the Primary Science Orbit will be examined, and the trade-offs between science objectives and orbiter capability will be presented.

Trajectory Design Using a Dynamical Systems Approach With Application to Genesis

A number of missions have recently been proposed that aim to take advantage of the growing scientific interest in the region of space near libration points in the Sun-Earth system. In support of missions that include increasingly complex trajectories and incorporate libration point orbits, more efficient techniques and new philosophies for design must be considered.

Visualizing Corridors in Terminal Airspace using Trajectory Clustering

Context: Advances in battery and automation technology have made routine air taxi and cargo transport in urban areas a business model that can be attained by emerging aviation innovators. The community vision and work to enable these novel operations is discussed using the term ‘Urban Air Mobility’ or UAM. Small, piloted, airspace vehicles that fly with a few passengers do operate in urban areas today, and these vehicles can be studied as an early proxy for this future UAM traffic. Aim: We seek to identify corridors already in daily operation and their properties. Method: We applied DBSCAN and HDBSCAN to Dallas Forth-Worth TRACON flight data to identify corridors in use, their density, and devised a method to annotate landing sites used in these corridors with site metadata. Results: While DBSCAN was unable to group similar trajectories, we we were able to successfully identify corridors using HDBSCAN, measure their density and annotate them. Conclusion: The applied method can successfully identify corridors in daily operation with additional metadata to help domain expert understand the intent of UAM corridors.
