Influence of nonstatistical properties in nuclear structure on emission of prompt fission neutrons

We report the Hauser-Feshbach fission-fragment decay (HF 3 D) model is extended to calculate the prompt fission neutron spectrum (PFNS) for the thermal-neutron-induced fission on 235 U, where the evaporated neutrons from all possible fission-fragment pairs are aggregated. By studying model parameter sensitivities on the calculated PFNS as well as nonstatistical behavior of low-lying discrete level spin distribution, we conclude that discrepancies between the aggregation calculation and the experimental PFNS seen at higher neutron emission energies can be attributed to both the primary fission-fragment yield distribution and the possible high spin states that are not predicted by the statistical theory of nuclear structure.

Physical properties and electronic structure of single-crystal KCo 2 As 2

We present a method for producing high quality KCo 2 As 2 crystals, stable in air and suitable for a variety of measurements. X-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical transport and heat capacity measurements confirm the high quality and an absence of long range magnetic order down to at least 2 K. Residual resistivity values approaching 0.25 µΩ cm are representative of the high quality and low impurity scattering, and a Sommerfeld coefficient γ = 7.3 mJ/mol K 2 signifies weaker correlations than the Fe-based counterparts. Together with Hall effect measurements, angle-resolved photoemission experiments reveal a Fermi surface consisting of electron pockets at the center and corner of the Brillouin zone, in line with theoretical predictions and in contrast to the mixed carrier types of other pnictides with the ThCr 2 Si 2 structure. A large, linear magnetoresistance of 200% at 14 T, together with an observed linear and hyperbolic, rather than parabolic, band dispersions are unusual characteristics of this compound.

Structural and magnetic properties of Pt/Co/Mn-based multilayers

Magnetic multilayers are a rich class of material systems with numerous highly tunable physical parameters that determine both their magnetic and electronic properties. Here, we present a comprehensive experimental study of the system Pt/Co/Mn, which extends the group of Pt / Co / X ( X = metal) multilayers that have been investigated thus far. We demonstrate that an increasing Co layer thickness changes the magnetic anisotropy from out of plane to in plane, whereas the deposition of thicker Mn layers leads to a decrease in the saturation magnetization. Temperature-dependent magnetometry measurements reinforce the hypothesis of antiferromagnetic coupling at the Co/Mn interfaces being responsible for the observed Mn thickness dependence of the magnetization reversal. Moreover, magneto-optical imaging experiments indicate systematic changes in magnetic domain patterns as a function of the Co and Mn layer thickness, suggesting the existence of bubblelike domains—potentially even magnetic skyrmions—in the case of sufficiently thick Mn layers, which are expected to contribute to a sizable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the multilayer stacks. As a result, we identify Pt/Co/Mn as a highly complex multilayer system with strong potential for further fundamental studies and possible applications.

Investigating the electrical transport properties and electronic structure of Zr 2 ⁢CuSb 3

The checkerboard lattice has been proposed to host topological flat bands as a result of destructive interference among its various electronic hopping terms. However, it has proven challenging to realize experimentally due to the difficulty of isolating this structure from any significant out-of-plane bonding while maintaining structural integrity. Here, in this study, single crystals of Zr 2 CuSb 3 , a potential candidate for the checkerboard lattice, were synthesized using the solution (self-flux) method, and their structure was confirmed via x-ray diffraction. Electrical-transport measurements indicate metallic behavior with electron-dominated carriers. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals multiple electron pockets and significant k z broadening due to its large c axis and low dispersion features in k z . Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations further disentangle the contributions from each high-symmetry plane, providing a comprehensive characterization of electronic behavior. The DFT calculations were then used to determine the orbital contributions of the bands and detect the out-of-plane bonding which prevented the flat bands from forming.

Solid-state polymer-particle hybrid electrolytes: Structure and electrochemical properties

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) are challenged by complex interfacial chemistry and poor ion transport through the interfaces they form with battery electrodes. Here, we investigate a class of SSE composed of micrometer-sized lithium oxide (Li 2 O) particles dispersed in a polymerizable 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) liquid. Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of the DOL by Lewis acid salts inside a battery cell produces polymer-inorganic hybrid electrolytes with gradient properties on both the particle and battery cell length scales. These electrolytes sustain stable charge-discharge behavior in Li||NCM811 and anode-free Cu||NCM811 electrochemical cells. On the particle length scale, Li 2 O retards ROP, facilitating efficient ion transport in a fluid-like region near the particle surface. On battery cell length scales, gravity-assisted settling creates physical and electrochemical gradients in the hybrid electrolytes. By means of electrochemical and spectroscopic analyses, we find that Li 2 O particles participate in a reversible redox reaction that increases the effective CE in anode-free cells to values approaching 100%, enhancing battery cycle life.

Ion Pairing, Clustering and Transport in a LiFSI-TMP Electrolyte as Functions of Salt Concentration using Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Battery capacity is highly related to ion-pairing mechanisms in electrolytes, since a cluster formation can lead to dead Li formation, reducing the number of charge carriers and leading to capacity fading. We use molecular dynamics simulations to model an electrolyte comprising trimethyl phosphate (TMP) solvent and a lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (LiFSI) salt, exploring effects of salt concentration on solvation and ion-transport. We simulate the LiFSI-TMP electrolyte for salt concentrations of 0.7, 1.43 and 3.82 molar. A statistical analysis was performed to study ion-pairing, clustering, diffusivity, conductivity, and coordination of Li-ions, providing insights into relations between molecular structures and transport properties. Molecular structure of ionic components changes as concentration increases, from a predominant solvent separated ion pair (SSIP) and contact ion pair (CIP) to aggregate salt (AGG) and ionic cluster formation. Given the formation of the ionic cluster, the diffusion mechanism followed by Li-ions changes from a hopping/exchange to a vehicular mechanism as concentration increases; this is reflected in a decrease of ionic conductivities. Ionicity was also calculated to reveal how the ionic motion changes from an uncorrelated to a correlated one as the salt concentration increases. Furthermore, we also compared our results with experimental calculations performed for similar electrolyte systems

Statistical properties of magnetic structures and energy dissipation during turbulent reconnection in the Earth's magnetotail

We present the first statistical study of magnetic structures and associated energy dissipation observed during a single period of turbulent magnetic reconnection, by using the in situ measurements of the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the Earth's magnetotail on 26 July 2017. The structures are selected by identifying a bipolar signature in the magnetic field and categorized as plasmoids or current sheets via an automated algorithm which examines current density and plasma flow. The size of the plasmoids forms a decaying exponential distribution ranging from subelectron up to ion scales. The presence of substantial number of current sheets is consistent with a physical picture of dynamic production and merging of plasmoids during turbulent reconnection. The magnetic structures are locations of significant energy dissipation via electric field parallel to the local magnetic field, while dissipation via perpendicular electric field dominates outside of the structures. Significant energy also returns from particles to fields.

Processing, structure, and thermal properties of ZrW 2 O 8 , HfW 2 O 8 , HfMgW 3 O 12 , Al(HfMg) 0.5 W 3 O 12 , and Al 0.5 Sc 1.5 W 3 O 12 negative and zero thermal expansion coefficient ceramics

Negative and zero coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) materials are of interest for developing polymer composites in electronic circuits that match the expansion of Si and in zero CTE supports for optical components, e.g., mirrors. In this work, the processing challenges and stability of ZrW 2 O 8 , HfW 2 O 8 , HfMgW 3 O 12 , Al(HfMg) 0.5 W 3 O 12 , and Al 0.5 Sc 1.5 W 3 O 12 negative and zero thermal expansion coefficient ceramics are discussed. Al 0.5 Sc 1.5 W 3 O 12 is demonstrated to be a relatively simple oxide to fabricate in large quantity and is shown to exhibit single phase up to 1300 °C in air and inert N 2 environments. The negative and zero CTE behavior was confirmed with dilatometry. Thermal conductivity and heat capacity were reported for the first time for HfMgW 3 O 12 and Al 0.5 Sc 1.5 W 3 O 12 and thermal conductivity was found to be very low (~0.5 W/mK). Grüneisen parameter is also estimated. Methods for integration of Al 0.5 Sc 1.5 W 3 O 12 with other materials was examined and embedding 50 vol% of the ceramic powder in flexible epoxy was demonstrated with a commercial vendor.
