Design development of the Apollo command and service module thrust vector attitude control systems

Development of the Apollo thrust vector control digital autopilot (TVC DAP) was summarized. This is the control system that provided pitch and yaw attitude control during velocity change maneuvers using the main rocket engine on the Apollo service module. A list of ten primary functional requirements for this control system are presented, each being subordinate to a more general requirement appearing earlier on the list. Development process functions were then identified and the essential information flow paths were explored. This provided some visibility into the particular NASA/contractor interface, as well as relationships between the many individual activities.

JT9D engine diagnostics. Task 2: Feasibility study of measuring in-service flight loads

The feasibility of measuring JT9D propulsion system flight inertia loads on a 747 airplane is studied. Flight loads background is discussed including the current status of 747/JT9D loads knowledge. An instrumentation and test plan is formulated for an airline-owned in-service airplane and the Boeing-owned RA001 test airplane. Technical and cost comparisons are made between these two options. An overall technical feasibility evaluation is made and a cost summary presented. Conclusions and recommendations are presented in regard to using existing inertia loads data versus conducting a flight test to measure inertia loads.

A space-based public service platform for terrestrial rescue operations

The space-based Public Service Platform (PSP) is a multibeam, high-gain communications relay satellite that can provide a variety of functions for a large number of people on earth equipped with extremely small, very low cost transceivers. This paper describes the PSP concept, the rationale used to derive the concept, the criteria for selecting specific communication functions to be performed, and the advantages of performing such functions via satellite. The discussion focuses on the benefits of using a PSP for natural disaster warning; control of attendant rescue/assistance operations; and rescue of people in downed aircraft, aboard sinking ships, lost or injured on land.

Delay decomposition at a single server queue with constant service time and multiple inputs

Two network consisting of single server queues, each with a constant service time, are considered. The external inputs to each network are assumed to follow some general probability distribution. Several interesting equivalencies that exist between the two networks considered are derived. This leads to the introduction of an important concept in delay decomposition. It is shown that the waiting time experienced by a customer can be decomposed into two basic components called self-delay and interference delay.

Public service communications satellite

Health, education, public safety, and information transfer applications of public service communications satellites are discussed with particular attention to the use of communications satellites to improve rural health delivery. Health-care communications requirements are summarized. The communications system concept involves small inexpensive stationary, portable, and moving ground terminals which will provide communications between any two points in the U.S. with both fixed and moving terminals on a continuous 24-hour basis. User requirements, wavebands, and privacy techniques are surveyed.

Public service satellite communications

It is suggested that the high effective isotropic radiated power provided by high-power satellite transmitters and high-gain antennas could be used in conjunction with economical ground receivers to furnish public services in remote areas of the U.S. Applications to health care, education and public safety are mentioned. A system concept involving a communications satellite operating in the Ku-band (12-GHz down, 14-GHz up) and either 100/30 watt stationary earth terminals with 1-1.8 m antennas or mobile terminals with omnidirectional antennas is presented.

Requirements for a geosynchronous information services platform

The requirements projected to the year 2000 for space-based communications facilities, including both personal communications and innovative services, are developed based upon anticipated demographic and economic growth for the seven major regions of the world. Projected growth requirements, when considered in light of operational factors such as orbit/spectrum crowding and the high investment costs of ground-based systems, suggest the need for new system concepts for communications. The concept of complexity inversion (placing high-cost systems in space and providing low-cost ground terminals to users) is examined and compared with the more conventional approach utiliizing land lines and extensive ground installations. The recommendation is made to develop the technology and capability to construct platforms in space, and the applicability of the Shuttle/Spacelab system in constructing large antenna systems in space is briefly considered.

Telecommunication service markets through the year 2000 in relation to millimeter wave satellite systems

NASA is currently conducting a series of millimeter wave satellite system market studies to develop 30/20 GHz satellite system concepts that have commercial potential. Four contractual efforts were undertaken: two parallel and independent system studies and two parallel and independent market studies. The marketing efforts are focused on forecasting the total domestic demand for long haul telecommunications services for the 1980-2000 period. Work completed to date and reported in this paper include projections of: geographical distribution of traffic; traffic volume as a function of urban area size; and user identification and forecasted demand.

Integrated orbital servicing study follow-on. Volume 1: Executive summary

Orbital maintenance concepts were investigated and the equipment for one-g demonstrations of axial and radial module exchange was designed in three control modes: manual direct control, supervisory control, and manually augmented control. Significant results obtained and the conclusions drawn are presented and discussed. The overall conclusion is that on-orbit servicing should be established as an ongoing space transportation system capability.

Design and Development of the Space Shuttle Tail Service Masts

The successful launch of a space shuttle vehicle depends on the proper operation of two tail service masts (TSMs). Reliable TSM operation is assured through a comprehensive design, development, and testing program. The results of the concept verification test (CVT) and the resulting impact on prototype TSM design are presented. The design criteria are outlined, and the proposed prototype TSM tests are described.

Titanium-alloy, metallic-fluid heat pipes for space service

Reactivities of titanium limit its long-term terrestrial use for unprotected heat-pipe envelopes to about 870 K (1100 F). But this external thermochemical limitation disappears when considerations shift to space applications. In such hard-vacuum utilization much higher operating temperatures are possible. Primary restrictions in space environment result from vaporization, thermal creep, and internal compatibilities. Unfortunately, a respected head-pipe reference indicates that titanium is compatible only with cesium from the alkali-metal working-fluid family. This problem and others are subjects of the present paper which advocates titanium-alloy, metallic-fluid heat pipes for long-lived, weight-effective space service between 500 and 1300 K (440 and 1880 F).

Power Extension Package (PEP) system definition extension, orbital service module systems analysis study. Volume 7: PEP logistics and training plan requirements

Recommendations for logistics activities and logistics planning are presented based on the assumption that a system prime contractor will perform logistics functions to support all program hardware and will implement a logistics system to include the planning and provision of products and services to assure cost effective coverage of the following: maintainability; maintenance; spares and supply support; fuels; pressurants and fluids; operations and maintenance documentation training; preservation, packaging and packing; transportation and handling; storage; and logistics management information reporting. The training courses, manpower, materials, and training aids required will be identified and implemented in a training program.
