Space construction engineering - A new career field

Opportunities for engineers in the design and construction of future large space structures are outlined. Possible space structures for the 1980's include a large mirror to reflect sunlight to earth for night lighting, an antenna for a personal communications system, a deep space communications relay system and a large passive radiometer to measure soil moisture. Considerations in the design of such structures include the lack of gravity, allowing structures to be built with much less supporting weight, the cost of transportation to orbit, leading to the use of aluminum or composite materials stored on reels and attached to a beam builder, and the required surface accuracy in the presence of thermal stresses. Construction factors to consider include the use of astronauts and remote manipulators in assembly, both of which have been demonstrated to be feasible.

Subcarrier phase recovery performance in bent-pipe mode of Shuttle data transmission

The subcarrier phase recovery is analyzed for the bent-pipe mode of Space Shuttle detached-payload data transmission on the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) Ku-band return link. The high-power component of the subcarrier modulation is unrestored payload data, either at baseband or modulating another subcarrier. At the receiver a Costas loop recovers the subcarrier phase. To analyze its performance in the baseband case, we obtain the loop S-curve, the power spectral density of the equivalent noise process, and the loop phase error variance.

High rate data acquisition from Spacelab/Shuttle

The need for high data rates from a variety of experiments on Spacelab/Shuttle produced the requirement for the Spacelab High Rate Multiplexer/Demultiplexer system. This system acquires serial digital data at asynchronous bit rates from up to sixteen experiments, two data buses, three voice links, two tape recorders, and a universal time channel. Experiment data rates may vary from 200 bps to 16 Mbps while recorded data rates range from 250 Kbps to 32 Mbps. The High Rate Multiplexer (HRM) accepts these data inputs and forms a serial PCM output at flexible rates up to 48 Mbps. This PCM output is transmitted to ground by a Ku-Band RF link via the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) or recorded on board for delayed transmission. A complementary ground based High Rate Demultiplexer (HRDM) accepts and demultiplexes the composite PCM data at ground processing locations.

The effect of transponder imperfections on the error probability performance of a satellite communication system

The bit error rate (BER) performance analysis of a data communication system is generally based on the assumption that signal waveforms are ideal and hardware-induced distortion is absent. In a satellite communication system such distortion arises in the satellite transponder, as well as in the transmitter and receiver portions. NASA, which is in the process of developing its Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS), is very much interested in understanding the impact of numerous forms of hardware distortion that have been identified on BER performance. The present paper examines the cumulative impact of nine forms of distortion induced by the transponder on BPSK and QPSK signals. For the present analysis, the transmitter and receiver are assumed to operate in essentially ideal fashions. Computed results indicate that BPSK and QPSK performances are affected in substantially different manners, with QPSK generally more sensitive to a given form of distortion. Cumulative distortion effects are illustrated via computed performance curves.

Applications of a high-altitude powered platform /HAPP/

The high-altitude powered platform (HAPP) is a conceptual unmanned vehicle which could be either an airship or airplane. It would keep station at an altitude of 70,000 ft above a fixed point on the ground. A microwave power transmission system would beam energy from the ground up to the HAPP to power an electric motor-driven propeller and the payload. A study of the HAPP has shown that it could potentially be a cost-competitive platform for such remote sensing applications as forest fire detection, Great Lakes ice monitoring and Coast Guard law enforcement. It also has significant potential as a communications relay platform for (among other things) direct broadcast to home TVs over a large region.

Results of GEOS 3/ATS 6 satellite-to-satellite tracking orbit determination experiment

The purpose of the Geos 3/ATS 6 satellite-to-satellite tracking experiment was to develop, test, and evaluate methods of deriving orbit estimates from satellite-to-satellite tracking data. The results of the form of conventional orbit overlap tests, and a comparison of a Geos 3 orbit estimate obtained from satellite-to-satellite (SST) tracking data with an orbit estimate derived form C-band data. The method recommeded for estimating orbits from SST data is a Bayesian least squares procedure utilizing independent ranging to the relay satellite.

Algorithms for the Automated Power Systems Management

The system breadboard for the demonstration of Automated Power Systems Management (APSM) functions has been designed, fabricated, and is in the final stages of verification and testing. APSM functions fall into categories of fault detection and correction, commanding system and subsystem test and diagnoses, relay position monitoring, data acquisition and processing, and power management. All these functions are accomplished through software residing in 8-bit microprocessors dedicated to each group of Viking Orbiter power breadboard subassemblies and a 16-bit microprocessor serving as the central processor for the power system. This paper describes key monitoring, diagnostic, and control algorithms used in the APSM breadboard.

Airborne meteorological data-collection system

Aircraft position and weather data are collected, formatted, and relayed to ground from in-flight commercial jets. Data Acquisition and Control Unit in plane receives information from standard avionics data units, and provides scaling and storage. Normally, eight sets of data are acquired in 1 hour period and transmitted to satellite at precise time. Besides meteorological applications, system can locate and reroute aircraft into favorable winds to conserve fuel or aid search for downed planes.

Shuttle/TDRSS communications system performance analysis

The results of the performance analysis performed on the Shuttle/Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) communications system are presented. The existing Shuttle/TDRSS link simulation program were modified and refined to model the post-radio frequency interference TDRS hardware and to evaluate the performance degradation due to RFI effects. The refined link models were then used to determine, evaluate and assess expected S-band and Ku-band link performance. Parameterization results are presented for the ground station carrier and timing recovery circuits

Normal mode analysis of the IUS/TDRS payload in a payload canister/transporter environment

Special modeling techniques were developed to simulate an accurate mathematical model of the transporter/canister/payload system during ground transport of the Inertial Upper Stage/Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (IUS/TDRS) payload. The three finite element models - the transporter, the canister, and the IUS/TDRS payload - were merged into one model and used along with the NASTRAN normal mode analysis. Deficiencies were found in the NASTRAN program that make a total analysis using modal transient response impractical. It was also discovered that inaccuracies may exist for NASTRAN rigid body modes on large models when Given's method for eigenvalue extraction is employed. The deficiencies as well as recommendations for improving the NASTRAN program are discussed.

Prediction of solar induced currents and effects on power transmission systems in central Canada

The auroral-electrojet zone covers three quarters of Manitoba and consequently, solar storms strongly affect transmission lines. Harmonics are generated at transformers due to the saturation of their cores by induced currents, and the level of harmonics produced may cause malfunction of control relays, and yield unacceptable distortions in normal ac waveforms. The expected effects of long ac transmission systems were studied with emphasis on a 500 kv line to be built from Winnipeg to Minneapolis-St. Paul. Spectral analysis of induced current records from Manitoba Hydro's LaVerendrye station and magnetograms from IMS stations in Manitoba were used along with results of Campbell's work on the Alaskan pipeline induction problem (1978) in order to predict periodic and surge currents. It is concluded that the surge currents will produce significant levels of harmonics and corresponding operating problems during magnetic storms.
