Effect of crystal orientation on anisotropic etching and MOCVD growth of grooves on GaAs

Grooves can be formed on GaAs by wet-chemical anisotropic etching of surfaces masked by photoresist stripes. The effect of crystal orientation on the shape of the grooves etched and on subsequent epitaxial growth by MOCVD is presented. The polar lattice increases the complexity of the etching and growth processes. The slow-etch planes defined by anisotropic etching are not always the same as the growth facets produced during MOCVD deposition, especially for deposition on higher order planes.

Control-oriented modeling of combustion and flow processes in liquid propellant rocket engines

This paper presents a control-oriented model of the flow, reaction, and transport processes in liquid propellant rocket combustion chambers, based on the multicomponent conservation laws of gas dynamics. This model provides a framework for the inclusion of detailed chemical kinetic relations, viscous and other dissipative effects, a variety of actuators and sensors, as well as process and measurement disturbances. In addition to its potential usefulness to the designer in understanding the dynamical complexity of the system and the sources of model uncertainty, the model provides a rigorous basis for control system design. An appraisal of current and feasible actuators and sensors, and their mathematical representation are included.

Reduced pressure MOCVD of C-axis oriented BiSrCaCuO thin films

BiSrCaCuO thin films were deposited on MgO (100) single-crystal substrates by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition at 500 C and 2 torr using fluorinated beta-diketonate complexes of Sr, Ca, and Cu and triphenylbismuth. An inverted vertical reaction chamber allowed uniform film growth over large areas (7.7 cm diameter). The as-deposited films were amorphous mixtures of oxides and fluorides; a two-step annealing protocol (750 C + 850-870 C) was developed which gives c-axis oriented films of Bi2Sr2Ca1Cu2O(x). The postannealed films showed onsets in the resistive transition of 110 K, and zero resistivity was achieved by 83 K. Critical current densities as high as 11,000 A/sq cm were obtained at 25 K.

Mechanically Oriented, Low-Curie-Temperature Materials

Proposed fabrication process produces permanent magnets of greater flux density, intended for use at temperatures far below room temperature. Such magnets parts of electrical motors and other electromechanical actuators operating in cryogenic systems. Performances of actuators increase with flux densities available from their magnets. Based on use of mechanical metallurgical techniques to make oriented magnets of Dy3Al2, because these techniques produce alignments above Curie temperature.

Thomson scattering in a magnetic field. II - Arbitrary field orientation

This paper presents solutions to the equation of transfer for Thomson scattering in a constant magnetic field of arbitrary orientation. Results from several atmospheres are combined to give the flux from a dipole star. The results are compared to the polarization data of the magnetic white dwarf Grw + 70 deg 8247. The fit is good, though it implies a very large polarization in the ultraviolet. Thomson scattering is not thought to be an important opacity source in white dwarfs, so the good fit is either fortuitous or is perhaps explained by assuming the magnetic field affects the polarization processes in all opacities similarly.

More on the elongational viscosity of an oriented fiber assembly

The effective elongational viscosity for an oriented fiber assembly of discontinuous fibers suspended in a viscous matrix fluid is developed for a fiber array with variable overlap length of both symmetric and asymmetric geometries. Further, the relation is developed for a power-law matrix fluid with finite yield stress. The developed relations for a Newtonian fluid reveal that the influence of overlap length upon elongational viscosity may be expressed as a polynomial of second order. The results for symmetric and asymmetric geometries are shown to be equivalent. Finally, for the power-law fluid the influence of fiber aspect ratio on elongational viscosity was shown to be of order m + 1, where m is greater than 0 and less than 1, as compared to 2 for the Newtonian fluid, while the effective yield stress was found to be proportional to the fiber aspect ratio and volume fraction.

YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/Au/Nb sandwich geometry SNS weak links on c-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)

Sandwich geometry superconductor/normal metal/superconductor structures have been fabricated on LaAlO3 and cubic zirconia with laser-ablated, c-axis-oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-delta) base electrodes, 100-600 A of Au, and Nb counter electrodes, all formed in situ without breaking vacuum. Junctions range in size from 5 to 50 micron on a side. Four probe I-V measurements at 4.2 K show RnA products as low as 6 x 10 to the -9th sq cm and critical current densities up to 5.2 kA/sq cm. AC Josephson steps were observed with the application of 10-GHz radiation. The temperature dependence of Jc and the observation of the AC Josephson effect suggest that true supercurrents are present and that they do indeed represent the characteristics of the YBa2Cu3O(7-delta)/Au/Nb structure. The best results were obtained when the devices were annealed at about 450 C in O2 for 30 min after Au deposition.

Field oriented control of induction motors

Induction motors have always been known for their simple rugged construction, but until lately were not suitable for variable speed or servo drives due to the inherent complexity of the controls. With the advent of field oriented control (FOC), however, the induction motor has become an attractive option for these types of drive systems. An FOC system which utilizes the pulse population modulation method to synthesize the motor drive frequencies is examined. This system allows for a variable voltage to frequency ratio and enables the user to have independent control of both the speed and torque of an induction motor. A second generation of the control boards were developed and tested with the next point of focus being the minimization of the size and complexity of these controls. Many options were considered with the best approach being the use of a digital signal processor (DSP) due to its inherent ability to quickly evaluate control algorithms. The present test results of the system and the status of the optimization process using a DSP are discussed.

All a-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-y) - PrBa2Cu3O(7-z) - YBa2Cu3O(7-y) Josephson devices operating at 80 K

The controllable, reproducible fabrication of nonhysteretic Josephson devices with excess-current weak-link characteristics at temperatures up to 80 K have been demonstrated. The devices are patterned from in situ deposited a-axis oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-y) - PrBa2Cu3O(7-y) - YBa2Cu3O(7-y) trilayers grown on SrTiO3(001) substrates. Control of the critical current density and resistance is achieved by varying the thickness of the PrBa2Cu3O(7-z) barrier layer. Critical current densities in excess of 10,000 A/sq cm have been reproducibly measured; good uniformity across the wafer is obtained with device parameters scaling with device area. Strong constant-voltage current steps are observed under 11.2 GHz microwave radiation at temperatures up to and above 80 K.

Orientation and shape control of a weight optimum free-free beam in a circular orbit

In this study, the vibration and orientation control of large space structures using the linear quadratic regulator technique is investigated. Emphasis is placed on the control of both a class of optimally designed structures and uniform structures meeting the mission requirements using a long free-free beam in orbit as an example. The open loop and closed loop dynamics are compared and the transient responses are obtained to determine the effectiveness of the control system design.

The mid-infrared biconical reflectance of thin films on highly oriented pyrolytic graphite

Measurements are reported of the biconical reflectance of pyrolytic graphite in the spectral region between 4000 and 600/cm. The measurements are conducted with an FTIR spctrometer with the beam focused to a 1-mm-diam focal point on the sample surface. The highly oriented pyrolytic graphite has a high biconical reflectance as compared to other graphitic materials and does not cause significant beam scattering.

NASA TSRV essential flight control system requirements via object oriented analysis

The objective was to analyze the baseline flight control system of the Transport Systems Research Vehicle (TSRV) and to develop a system specification that offers high visibility of the essential system requirements in order to facilitate the future development of alternate, more advanced software architectures. The flight control system is defined to be the baseline software for the TSRV research flight deck, including all navigation, guidance, and control functions, and primary pilot displays. The Object Oriented Analysis (OOA) methodology developed is used to develop a system requirement definition. The scope of the requirements definition contained herein is limited to a portion of the Flight Management/Flight Control computer functionality. The development of a partial system requirements definition is documented, and includes a discussion of the tasks required to increase the scope of the requirements definition and recommendations for follow-on research.

Grain orientation in high Tc superconductors by molten salt powder synthesis

The molten salt or the flux method is used to fabricate a grain oriented YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (123) superconductor. Here we suggest a two-stage approach in using the 'green phase', Y2BaCuO5 (211), as seed crystals in the formation of YBa2Cu3O(7-x). The process uses Y2BaCuO5 formed by molten salt synthesis. The Y2BaCuO5 phase was observed to be stable in water and in most of the salt systems. Salt processing can form a small quantity of anisotropic particles of Y2BaCuO5. This material can form the 123 phase when tape cast and sintered in the presence of the required levels of Ba and Cu.
