Evaluate ERTS imagery for mapping and detection of changes of snowcover on land and on glaciers

The author has identified the following significant results. A possibly more accurate method to determine snowcover area change has been tried; snowcover area change over periods of an ERTS-1 cycle are very useful in determining energy balances over regional areas and to determine snow depth as a function of altitude. Also since shadow and cloud cover areas are highlighted this method may be a step toward more complete machine processing.

Utilizing ERTS-A imagery for tectonic analysis through study of Big Horn Mountains Region

The author has identified the following significant results. NASA-provided color composite (1048-17234) which includes the southeastern portion of the Bighorn Mountains and the western Powder River basin is of excellent quality. The considerable variations in the red hues indicate that vegetational mapping will be enhanced over the black and white. Some additional delineation of rock units can be made, particularly the Chugwater formation. Preliminary look at just received winter scenes indicates that topographic features are enhanced both due to the snow cover and to the lower sun angle.

High-resolution imagery of Uranus obtained by Stratoscope 2

From 17 photographs of Uranus obtained by Stratoscope 2, a composite image has been produced having a Gaussian point spread function with a half maximum intensity diameter of 0.2. No certain surface markings are visible. If there are any faint belts parallel to the rotation equator they have a maximum contrast of 5%. The measured limb darkening does not agree with either a deep Rayleigh atmosphere or with clouds high in the atmosphere; a cloud deck under a finite Rayleigh atmosphere seems to be indicated. The equatorial diameter of Uranus is measured to be 51,800 plus or minus 600 km and the ellipticity is estimated to be 0.01 plus or minus 0.01.

Evaluation of usefulness of Skylab EREP S-190 and S-192 imagery in multistage forest surveys

The author has identified the following significant results. A set of digital interpretation programs have been developed which perform the following tasks: (1) extraction of images for a desired sample unit or combination of sample units by scanner channel and storage of these images on high speed storage devices; (2) extraction of tone and texture information of 8 x 8 pixel interpretation units by channel and storage of these features on a high speed storage device; (3) center of gravity cluster node seeking in higher dimensional space and subsequent nearest neighbor classification, and output of the classification results on a high speed storage device. In all instances the classification results can be related to the original place of subset extraction through the coordinate transformation work previously performed.

Land use of northern megalopolis from ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. A color-coded urban-type land use map of the three northern megalopolitan states of Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island has been completed from ERTS-1 images. A computer data bank containing 11 categories of land use for the entire area by 1/4-square-kilometer cells is 80% completed. When completed, the data bank will permit the investigation to proceed to brief analytical studies for completion of the study.

Detection of small ponds on ERTS-1 imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. It has been determined that ponds within forested areas as small as one hectare (2.5 acres are detectable from the ERTS-1 data. This finding was made from the analysis of scene #1037-16244 on 29 August 1972 over the Sam Houston National Forest in Walker County, Texas. These ponds were identified on the 9 inch B/W transparencies magnified seven times in areas of contrast ratios in a range of 1:1.2 to 1:2.0.
