Assessing urbanized area expansion through the integration of Landsat and conventional data /79052/

An image base information system (IBIS) is utilized to integrate Landsat and census data for the purpose of mapping urban land and updating urbanized-area outer lines. IBIS is a subset of the video image communication and retrieval digital image processing system developed at JPL. IBIS is used to analyze three urban areas: Orlando, Florida; Seattle, Washington; and Boston, Massachusetts. In all three applications the primary objective is to map the expansion of urban land cover in the urban fringe. Pertinent tabular reports are produced.

Solar potential inventory and modeling

Image processing procedures for calculating the energy that roof-mounted solar collectors can potentially supply in a metropolitan area are presented. Satellite multispectral imagery from which land cover types can be determined digitally was sampled in order to estimate the percentage of land area occupied by flat or south-facing roof tops in residential and commercial/industrial areas. Procedures were applied to the various power subdistricts of the western San Fernando valley of California, and it was found that on the average 120% of the existing power demand could be met if only half the useable rooftop area were utilized, amounting to 385 MW of peak power and indicating the applicability of solar cells to power generation in urban areas.

International Planetary Patrol observations of Saturn's rings. I - Observations and data reduction

The paper describes the reduction procedure used for observations of Saturn's rings taken with the International Planetary Patrol Network in 1977. Corrections for atmospheric smearing are determined using an assumed ring model and performed by a two-dimensional Wiener filter developed at JPL's Image Processing Laboratory. These smearing corrections are shown to be consistent with the radial profile of the rings, not just on the major axis of the ring system, but over a range of azimuthal angle.

Satellite monitoring of sea surface pollution

The author has identified the following significant results. Image processing techniques developed are well adapted to the exploration and isolation of local areas which exhibit small temperature differences between themselves and their surroundings. In the worst case of imagery of small areal extent of sea surface having no coastal boundary in the area, there is yet no method of distinguishing unambiguously an oil spill from fog, cloud, the effect produced by shallow sediments, or the effects of naturally occuring thermal fronts. In the case of uniform slicks of liquid North Sea oil in still air, laboratory simulation experiments show that, for oil thicknesses in excess of 1 or 2 mm, there is, under equilibrium conditions, little dependence of oil surface temperature on the thickness of the oil layer. The surface temperature of oil is consistently higher than that of water, the difference being about 1 K at low values of relative humidity, but tending to increase as the relative humidity increases.

Programs for high-speed Fourier, Mellin and Fourier-Bessel transforms

Several FORTRAN program modules for performing one-dimensional and two-dimensional discrete Fourier transforms, Mellin, and Fourier-Bessel transforms are described along with programs that realize the algebra of high speed Fourier transforms on a computer. The programs can perform numerical harmonic analysis of functions, synthesize complex optical filters on a computer, and model holographic image processing methods.

Satellite snowcover and runoff monitoring in central Arizona

The author has identified the following significant results. Although the very high resolution experimental LANDSAT imagery permits rapid snow cover mapping at low cost, only one observation is available very 9 days. In contrast, low resolution operational imagery acquired by the ITOS and SMS/GOES satellites provide the daily synoptic observations necessary to monitor the rapid changes in snow covered areas in the entire Salt-Verde watershed. Geometric distortions in meteorological satellite imagery require specialized optical equipment or digital image processing for snow cover mapping.

Tradeoff between picture element dimensions and noncoherent averaging in side-looking airborne radar

An experiment was performed in which three synthetic-aperture images and one real-aperture image were successively degraded in spatial resolution, both retaining the same number of independent samples per pixel and using the spatial degradation to allow averaging of different numbers of independent samples within each pixel. The original and degraded images were provided to three interpreters familiar with both aerial photographs and radar images. The interpreters were asked to grade each image in terms of their ability to interpret various specified features on the image. The numerical interpretability grades were then used as a quantitative measure of the utility of the different kinds of image processing and different resolutions. The experiment demonstrated empirically that the interpretability is related exponentially to the SGL volume which is the product of azimuth, range, and gray-level resolution.

A non-interactive approach to land use determination

An operational procedure for use by the Corps of Engineers to acquire land use information for hydrologic planning purposes is described. The operational constraints preclude the use of dedicated, interactive image processing facilities. The procedure combines manual interpretation techniques and the batch-mode computer analysis of Landsat digital data. An example of the application of the procedure to an urban watershed is described.

X-ray observations of the North Polar Spur

The X-ray enhancement associated with the North Polar Spur (Radio Loop I) was observed by a soft X-ray instrument on OSO 8 during August 1975. This paper presents image-processed maps of the region scanned, a detailed analysis of the X-ray data, and interpretations of the data in terms of supernova remnant models. If the neutral hydrogen ridge, radio continuum ridge, and X-ray emission ridge are all associated, then they cannot all be fitted by a single supernova remnant model because they require different energies of explosion. A reheated supernova remnant model does appear compatible with all the available observations.

The spatial resolving power of earth resources satellites: A review

The significance of spatial resolving power on the utility of current and future Earth resources satellites is critically discussed and the relative merits of different approaches in defining and estimating spatial resolution are outlined. It is shown that choice of a particular measure of spatial resolution depends strongly on the particular needs of the user. Several experiments have simulated the capabilities of future satellite systems by degradation of aircraft images. Surprisingly, many of these indicated that improvements in resolution may lead to a reduction in the classification accuracy of land cover types using computer assisted methods. However, where the frequency of boundary pixels is high, the converse relationship is found. Use of imagery dependent upon visual interpretation is likely to benefit more consistently from higher resolutions. Extraction of information from images will depend upon several other factors apart from spatial resolving power: these include characteristics of the terrain being sensed, the image processing methods that are applied as well as certain sensor characteristics.

Surface mapping of selected regions in the Orion Nebula

Low dispersion, large aperture, ultraviolet spectra of selected regions in the Orion Nebula were obtained with the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) scientific instrument. Spectra obtained at 35 contiguous locations defining a mosaic within the nebula were used to generate monochromatic images of high spatial resolution at the wavelengths of the ultraviolet emission lines. Image processing techniques were utilized to generate and analyze these ultraviolet surface maps. The imagery at the three wavelengths studied shows definite differences in the spatial distribution of emission from the CII CIII and OII ions. Ways of using the imagery to determine ionization structure and C/O abundance ratios throughout the regions observed are developed, in addition to means of analyzing the extensive continuum measurements in terms of dust scattering characteristics.

NEEDS - Information Adaptive System

The Information Adaptive System (IAS) is an element of the NASA End-to-End Data System (NEEDS) Phase II and is focused toward onboard image processing. The IAS is a data preprocessing system which is closely coupled to the sensor system. Some of the functions planned for the IAS include sensor response nonuniformity correction, geometric correction, data set selection, data formatting, packetization, and adaptive system control. The inclusion of these sensor data preprocessing functions onboard the spacecraft will significantly improve the extraction of information from the sensor data in a timely and cost effective manner, and provide the opportunity to design sensor systems which can be reconfigured in near real-time for optimum performance. The purpose of this paper is to present the preliminary design of the IAS and the plans for its development.
