The Efficacy of Seasonal Terrestrial Water Storage Forecasts for Predicting Vegetation Activity Over Africa

Terrestrial water storage (TWS) provides important information on terrestrial hydroclimate and may have value for seasonal forecasting because of its strong persistence. We use the NASA Hydrological Forecast and Analysis System (NHyFAS) to investigate TWS forecast skill over Africa and assess its value for predicting vegetation activity from satellite estimates of leaf area index (LAI). Forecast skill is high over East and Southern Africa, extending up to 3–6 months in some cases, with more modest skill over West Africa. Highest skill generally occurs during the dry season or beginning of the wet season when TWS anomalies from the previous wet season are most likely to carry forward in time. In East Africa, this occurs prior to and during the transition into the spring “Long Rains” from January–March, while in Southern Africa this period of highest skill starts at the beginning of the dry season in April and extends through to the start of the wet season in October. TWS is highly and positively correlated with LAI, and a logistic regression model shows high cross-validation skill in predicting above or below normal LAI using TWS. Combining the LAI regression model with the NHyFAS forecasts, 1-month lead LAI predictions have high accuracy over East and Southern Africa, with reduced but significant skill at 3-month leads over smaller sub-regions. This highlights the potential value of TWS as an additional source of information for seasonal forecasts over Africa, with direct applications to some of the most vulnerable agricultural regions on the continent.

External Dependencies-Driven Architecture Discovery and Analysis of Implemented Systems

A method for architecture discovery and analysis of implemented systems (AIS) is disclosed. The premise of the method is that architecture decisions are inspired and influenced by the external entities that the software system makes use of. Examples of such external entities are COTS components, frameworks, and ultimately even the programming language itself and its libraries. Traces of these architecture decisions can thus be found in the implemented software and is manifested in the way software systems use such external entities. While this fact is often ignored in contemporary reverse engineering methods, the AIS method actively leverages and makes use of the dependencies to external entities as a starting point for the architecture discovery. The AIS method is demonstrated using the NASA's Space Network Access System (SNAS). The results show that, with abundant evidence, the method offers reusable and repeatable guidelines for discovering the architecture and locating potential risks (e.g. low testability, decreased performance) that are hidden deep in the implementation. The analysis is conducted by using external dependencies to identify, classify and review a minimal set of key source code files. Given the benefits of analyzing external dependencies as a way to discover architectures, it is argued that external dependencies deserve to be treated as first-class citizens during reverse engineering. The current structure of a knowledge base of external entities and analysis questions with strategies for getting answers is also discussed.

Single photon detection and timing in the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment.

The goals of the Lunar Laser Ranging Experiment lead to the need for the measurement of a 2.5 sec time interval to an accuracy of a nanosecond or better. The systems analysis which included practical retroreflector arrays, available laser systems, and large telescopes led to the necessity of single photon detection. Operation under all background illumination conditions required auxiliary range gates and extremely narrow spectral and spatial filters in addition to the effective gate provided by the time resolution. Nanosecond timing precision at relatively high detection efficiency was obtained using the RCA C31000F photomultiplier and Ortec 270 constant fraction of pulse-height timing discriminator. The timing accuracy over the 2.5 sec interval was obtained using a digital interval with analog vernier ends. Both precision and accuracy are currently checked internally using a triggerable, nanosecond light pulser. Future measurements using sub-nanosecond laser pulses will be limited by the time resolution of single photon detectors.

Fully unsteady subsonic and supersonic potential aerodynamics for complex aircraft configurations with applications to flutter

A general formulation is presented for the analysis of steady and unsteady, subsonic and supersonic aerodynamics for complex aircraft configurations. The theoretical formulation, the numerical procedure, the description of the program SOUSSA (steady, oscillatory and unsteady, subsonic and supersonic aerodynamics) and numerical results are included. In particular, generalized forces for fully unsteady (complex frequency) aerodynamics for a wing-body configuration, AGARD wing-tail interference in both subsonic and supersonic flows as well as flutter analysis results are included. The theoretical formulation is based upon an integral equation, which includes completely arbitrary motion. Steady and oscillatory aerodynamic flows are considered. Here small-amplitude, fully transient response in the time domain is considered. This yields the aerodynamic transfer function (Laplace transform of the fully unsteady operator) for frequency domain analysis. This is particularly convenient for the linear systems analysis of the whole aircraft.

Agricultural inventory capabilities of machine processed LANDSAT digital data

Agricultural crop identification and acreage determination analysis of LANDSAT digital data was performed for two study areas. A multispectral image processing and analysis system was utilized to perform the manmachine interactive analysis. The developed techniques yielded crop acreage estimate results with accuracy greater than 90% and as high as 99%. These results are encouraging evidence of agricultural inventory capabilities of machine processed LANDSAT digital data.
