Helium abundance in the solar wind.

Explorer 34 observations of hydrogen and He ions in solar wind, noting number density variations and tentative association with geomagnetic storms

Neutrons produced by known energies of ions abundant in space

Particle accelerator radiation measurements are applied to the problem of calculating biological dose from radiation produced in the walls of a spacecraft by various ions in space. Neutrons, one of the products of the interactions of energetic ions with matter, are usually quite penetrating and have large values of Q.F. or R.B.E. Ions of helium, boron, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen were accelerated and directed onto target materials of copper or tantalum. The secondary neutron production was determined. Studies were made of the angular distribution and an inferred neutron spectrum was calculated from activities of threshold reaction detectors.

Concerning the primordial abundance of helium in quasi-stellar sources.

Primordial temperature fluctuations, which appear to be necessary in order to explain aspects of galaxy formation, can lead to observable effects in some objects. In QSS and other compact systems a correlation of absolute luminosity with primordial helium content is predicted.

Major and trace element abundances in volcanic rocks of orogenic areas.

The composition of recent island-arc volcanic rocks in relation to their geographic and stratigraphic relations is discussed. The differences in composition between volcanic rocks and those in continental margins are pointed out. Trace elements and major elements are shown to suggest a continuous gradational sequence from tholeiites through calc-alkaline rocks to shoshonites.

The solar abundance of gold.

Thirteen spectral scans (in the direction of increasing and decreasing wavelength) obtained with a new double-band pass monochromator system put into operation with the Michigan spectrometer at the Snow telescope at Mount Wilson are interpreted by the method of spectral synthesis. The intensity profile of the 3122.79 line, attributable to gold, is interpreted, and a representation of the solar spectrum in the neighborhood of the AU 3122.79 line is given in tabular form.

Upper limits on the atomic hydrogen abundance in 12 globular clusters.

Description of 21-cm neutral-hydrogen line observations of 12 globular clusters performed with negative results by means of the NRAO 140-ft telescope. Limits on the atomic hydrogen content yielded by these observations over a range of 11 to 85 solar masses are presented.-
