A first search for argon-bound neutron-antineutron oscillation using the MicroBooNE LArTPC

The use of Liquid Argon Time Projection Chambers (LArTPCs) as a detector technology in neutrino experiments has grown considerably over the past two decades. The excellent spatial and calorimetric resolution offered by LArTPCs enable precise neutrino oscillation measurements as well as beyond-Standard Model searches. One such search, which is the focus of this note, is the search for nucleus-bound neutron-antineutron (n – n̄) oscillation. The n – n̄ oscillation process is a baryon number violating process that produces a unique, star-like topology as a result of multiple final state pions. This unique signature is a key feature that may be used to search for this signal process. This note describes a machine learning-based analysis of MicroBooNE data, making use of a sparse convolutional neural network to search for n – n̄ oscillation-like signals in MicroBooNE. While the future DUNE LArTPC can search for this signature with high sensitivity, existing MicroBooNE data can be used to demonstrate and validate methodologies that can be used as part of the DUNE search. This document presents the first-ever search for n – n̄ oscillation in a LArTPC, using MicroBooNE off-beam data (data collected when the neutrino beam was not running).

Neutron-antineutron oscillation sensitivity study at DUNE

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) aims to measure neutrino oscillations as well as search for beyond the standard model physics such as baryon number violating (BNV) processes. DUNE will use a 70 kt Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) located more than 1 km underground. A promising BNV process is neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n \rightarrow \bar{n}$) which, if discovered, would offer unique insight into the baryon asymmetry of the universe. We are developing a classification algorithm that separates $n \rightarrow \bar{n}$ events from major background atmospheric neutrino interactions using DUNE far detector simulations. We will perform the classification of signals and backgrounds by analyzing key features such as the multiplicity, isotropy, and kinematics of the reconstructed events. In the future, this algorithm can be used to obtain the sensitivity of the DUNE detectors to the neutron-antineutron oscillation lifetime.

Three-Flavor Neutrino Oscillations at NOvA

NOvA, is a two-detector, long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment located at Fermilab, Batavia, IL, USA. It is designed primarily to constrain neutrino oscillation parameters such as the atmospheric mass squared splitting, $\Delta m^2_{32}$, the mixing angle, $\theta_{23}$, neutrino mass hierachy, and the CP-violating phase, $\delta_{CP}$, using $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ disappearance and $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ appearance data. NOvA receives a high purity 900 KW instense beam of neutrinos and anti-neutrinos from Fermilab's Neutrinos at Main Injector (NuMI) beamline. NOvA used functionally identical finely granulated liquid scintillation detectors, both situated 14.6 mrad off-axis to the beam direction. The NOvA near detector observes un-oscillated $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and beam $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ events, while the far detector, which is situated 809 km away from the near detector, records un-oscillated $\nu_\mu \ (\bar{\nu}_\mu)$ and oscillated $\nu_e \ (\bar{\nu}_e)$ events. We will discuss the neutrino oscillation analysis strategy at NOvA and the latest three-flavor oscillation results from 10 years of NOvA data in this talk.

New NOvA Results with 10 Years of Data

NOvA is a two-detector accelerator neutrino oscillation experiment. Using Fermilab's newly Megawatt-capable NuMI neutrino beam, NOvA measures the disappearance of muon (anti)neutrinos and the appearance of electron (anti)neutrinos at the far detector, 810 km from the source. These oscillations are observed relative to the unoscillated beam composition measured at the functionally equivalent near detector, also located at Fermilab, which enables significant cancellation of systematic uncertainties. From these, we obtain precision measurements of the larger neutrino mass splitting and the largest neutrino mixing angle, as well as constraints on the octant of that angle, the neutrino mass ordering, and neutrino CP violation. In this talk I will present new measurements of these parameters using 10 years of NOvA data collected between 2013 and 2023, which includes twice the neutrino-mode exposure of our previous results.

A New Track Trigger for Characterization of the Antiproton-Induced Background in the Mu2e Experiment

The Mu2e experiment at Fermilab will enable the search for the neutrinoless muon to electron conversion in the field of an Al nucleus, a charged lepton flavor violating process. If observed, there would be a clear indication of physics beyond the Standard Model. Mu2e aims to reach a single event sensitivity of $3 /times 10^{-17}$, improving from the previous limit by 4 orders of magnitude. This improvement relies on the development of trigger selection systems, designed to discard data from background-induced events by placing kinematic, topological cuts on a particle’s reconstructed track. One of the largest sources of background Mu2e faces is proton-antiproton annihilation. These annihilations produce a 2 GeV shower of particles, among which there could be an electron that mimics the conversion electron signal, with an expected number of 0.010 ± 0.010. The large uncertainty on this number is dominated by the systematic uncertainty associated with the theoretical production model. To better characterize this background, we have developed an antiproton trigger selection by taking advantage of the track multiplicity and topology of these events. We discuss the steps taken in this development and the first performance study of this trigger, evaluating the signal efficiency and background rate. This trigger is essential to enable a data-driven analysis targeting the reduction of the systematic uncertainty of the antiproton-induced background in the Mu2e experiment.

Demonstration of Model-Based Design for Digital Controller Using Formal Methods

This report describes work originally performed in FY19 that assembled a workflow enabling formal verification of high-consequence digital controllers. The approach builds on an engineering analysis strategy using multiple abstraction levels (Model-Based Design) and performs exhaustive formal analysis of appropriate levels – here, state machines and C code – to assure always/never properties of digital logic that cannot be verified by testing alone. The operation of the workflow is illustrated using example models and code, including expected failures of verification when properties are violated.

Machine Learning Solutions for a Stable Grid Recovery

Grid operating security studies are typically employed to establish operating boundaries, ensuring secure and stable operation for a range of operation under NERC guidelines. However, if these boundaries are severely violated, existing system security margins will be largely unknown, as would be a secure incremental dispatch path to higher security margins while continuing to serve load. As an alternative to the use of complex optimizations over dynamic conditions, this work employs the use of machine learning to identify a sequence of secure state transitions which place the grid in a higher degree of operating security with greater static and dynamic stability margins. Several reinforcement learning solution methods were developed using deep learning neural networks, including Deep Q-learning, Mu-Zero, and the continuous algorithms Proximal Reinforcement Learning, and Advantage Actor Critic Learning. The work is demonstrated on a power grid with three control dimensions but can be scaled in size and dimensionality, which is the subject of ongoing research.

Design and assembling status of the Mu2e electromagnetic calorimeter mechanical structures

The muon-to-electron conversion (Mu2e) experiment at Fermilab will search for the Charged Lepton Flavour Violating neutrino-less coherent conversion of a muon into an electron in the field of an aluminum nucleus. The observation of this process would be the unambiguous evidence of physics beyond the Standard Model. The detector has been designed as a state-of-the-art crystal calorimeter and employs 1348 pure Cesium Iodide (CsI) crystals readout by UV-extended silicon photosensors and fast front-end and digitization electronics. A design consisting of two identical annular matrices (named disks ) positioned at the relative distance of 70 cm, downstream the aluminum target along the muon beamline, satisfies the Mu2e physics requirements. The hostile Mu2e operational conditions, in terms of radiation levels (total ionizing dose of 12 krad and a neutron fluence of 5 10^{10} n/cm2 @ 1 MeVeq (Si)/y), magnetic field intensity (1 T) and vacuum level (10−4 Torr) have posed tight constraints on the design of the detector mechanical structures and materials choice. The support structure of the two 674 crystal matrices employs two aluminum hollow rings and parts made of open- cell vacuum-compatible carbon fiber. The photosensors and service front-end electronics for each crystal are assembled in a unique mechanical unit inserted in a machined copper holder. The 674 units are supported by a machined plate made of vacuum-compatible plastic material. The plate also integrates the cooling system made of a network of copper lines flowing a low temperature radiation-hard fluid and placed in thermal con- tact with the copper holders. The data acquisition electronics is hosted in aluminum custom crates positioned on the external lateral surface of the two disks. The crates also integrate the electronics cooling system. In this poster we will review the constraints on the calorimeter mechanical structures, the technological choices, and the status of assembling at Fermilab.

Precision Neutrino Oscillation Physics with the Daya Bay and DUNE Experiments

The team supported by this grant made significant contributions to the final results of the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. This experiment utilized eight identically designed antineutrino detectors positioned at varying distances from six 2.9 GW th nuclear reactors to precisely measure the oscillation parameters that govern antineutrino disappearance at short (<2 km) baselines. Our group played a leading role in the calibration and data quality efforts, both of which have been crucial for all final results. Additionally, we co-led the development of an independent measurement of the neutrino mixing angle θ 13 and the atmospheric mass splitting using a sample of antineutrinos identified via neutron capture on hydrogen. Lastly, we laid the groundwork for a search for seasonal modulation in Daya Bay’s measured muon flux using the final dataset, a result expected to be published soon. Simultaneously, our team ramped up its participation in the Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE). This experiment will employ a powerful neutrino beam from Fermilab in Illinois directed to the Homestake mine in South Dakota to address some of the most pressing questions in neutrino physics, including the ordering of neutrino masses and whether neutrinos violate the CP symmetry. Our work focused on the development of the pixelated and modularized Liquid Argon Time-Projection Chamber technology that is being prepared for DUNE’s Near Detector. Our group took responsibility for the development, testing, and maintenance of the firmware for the control boards of the detector’s charge readout system and played an active role in analyzing data produced by the very first fully integrated prototypes.

The Mu2e experiment

Mu2e will search for coherent, neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the nucleus field of aluminum with a sensitivity improvement of a factor of 10,000 over existing limits. Probing the charged lepton flavor-violating reaction at such sensitivity may uncover new physics at a scale unreachable by direct searches at current or planned high-energy colliders. The experiment complements and extends the current studies at MEG-II and the LHC. I will present the physics motivation for Mu2e, as well as the design and construction status of the experiment.

Accelerator Neutrinos

Neutrino beams generated by particle accelerators are essential for probing fundamental physics. This presentation will examine the creation of high-intensity, well-collimated neutrino beams, crucial for long-baseline experiments like DUNE and NOvA. These experiments are pushing proton beam power to multi-MW levels and utilizing large-scale detectors to overcome the challenge of limited event statistics. At LBNF, the DUNE experiment will rigorously test the three-neutrino flavor model and explore CP violation by analyzing oscillation signatures in high-intensity νμ(νμˉ)νμ(νμˉ) to νe(νeˉ)νe(νeˉ) beams. We'll explore the technical complexities of beamline components, the drive towards higher beam powers, and the strategies for measuring and managing neutrino flux. The presentation will also cover advancements in neutrino beam instrumentation and efforts to enhance beam precision, which are key to achieving the next generation of multi-megawatt accelerator facilities. By reviewing past achievements and future prospects, this talk aims to provide a clear overview of the current state and future potential of neutrino beam technology.

Application Deconfliction Characterization and Alternatives Analysis

This report provides an overview of the domain space and solution techniques that could be used to create a robust, flexible app deconfliction service. Three approaches are reviewed with summaries of the characteristics, elements, and results from preliminary demonstrations of solution techniques based on each approach: 1) rules and heuristics, 2) cooperation, and 3) optimization. The strengths and weaknesses of each solution technique were explored through a set of numerical demonstrations on modified IEEE 123 node and 9500 node test feeders. An alternatives analysis of individual deconfliction elements was performed with each solution technique element evaluated against criteria reflecting the dynamic app environment, need to balance app objectives, and scalability issues versus the number of applications, setpoints, and distributed control areas. It is anticipated that a combined solution for a GridAPPS-D Deconfliction Service can be formulated using a combination of elements from each solution technique. The combined solution would combine 1) device control budgets to reduce the size of the solution space by constraining system setpoints to those will not result in accelerated degradation of physical assets, 2) system operations rules to constrain the solution space by eliminating setpoints that result in violations of system limits or operational best practices, 3) contextual status signals shared with or among apps such that they could update their desired setpoints based on the evolving context, 4) a mediator that incentivizes apps to come to a cooperative solution, and 5) Setpoint-informed optimization as a fallback mechanism if a cooperative solution cannot be agreed upon by applications.

Evaluating the Thermal Impacts of Inadvertent Export on Service Transformers

As more DER interconnect to the system there are times where the total generation (or load) of a DER cannot be supported by the system. To more quickly allow these DER to interconnect they may need to regulate their output to a different export capacity than their nameplate capacity via a power control system (PCS). In the time it takes PCS to respond, however, an inadvertent export may occur, where the DER operates beyond its export limit. This report evaluates the potential thermal impact such momentary violations may have on service transformers, to determine whether response times should be more tightly controlled or not.

Autonomous Inverter Controls for Resilient and Secure Grid Operation: Vector Control Design for Grid Forming

The project addresses both fundamental and practical challenges of GFM/GFL inverter control for the power grids with high inverter based resources (IBRs) penetration. A data- driven modeling technique is applied to accurately model dynamics of PWM inverters, including electromagnetic-transient (EMT). Systematic and integrative designs of grid- forming (GFM) and grid-following (GFL) primary controls are developed to guarantee system performance under either normal or abnormal operating conditions without violating constraints. This modeling and control framework provides black-start capability in case of an outage without relying on rotating generators, and its secondary control is also shown to enhance resilience against cyber-physical attacks.

A Computational Review of Privacy-Preserving Mechanisms for the Smart Grid

Smart grid technologies have rapidly become one of the largest and most comprehensive sources of data for the modern utility. For the most part, data streams are seen as an essential tool that enable utilities to carry their day-to-day business operations, but they also create the need for efficient and secure data management strategies. In the context of the smart grid, ensuring data privacy is becoming an increasing concern due to a combination of factors that range from shifts in operational paradigms and rapid technology evolution to changes in legislation. Furthermore, researchers have highlighted the risks associated with improperly protected energy records. For example, energy consumption data from homes could be used to infer the behaviors and habits of home occupants through activity recognition or user profiling (Fan, 2017), which may lead to unfair service pricing, targeted advertising, or other personal security violations. Similarly, Electric Vehicles’ (EVs) charging metadata could be used to reveal private information about the owner such as their payment methods, preferred charging stations, and other locational and timing information that could be used to reconstruct the vehicle owner’s behaviors. The privacy of user data, even when used for statistical analysis or machine learning training processes, also needs to be carefully considered, as an individual’s private traits may still be vulnerable if their inclusion/exclusion greatly impacts the result or could be linked to a public dataset through cross-reference. The breach of user privacy also has severe impacts for organizations that store, transmit, or work on the data in the form of diminishing the public’s trust in them while potentially incurring legal consequences (e.g., fines and suspensions under the European Union General Data Protection Regulation, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, etc.). Because of these risks, several privacy-preserving mechanisms are available to help organizations comply with privacy legislations and prevent the unauthorized and malicious use of user data. In light of these concerns, this report focuses on performing a computational review of privacy-preserving mechanisms that have received a significant amount of interest in literature. It specifically focuses on 1) homomorphic encryption, 2) zero-knowledge proofs, 3) differential privacy, and 4) federated learning. It is worth noting that although many of the methods presented in this document rely on cryptographic primitives, their intent is not to provide perfect secrecy, but rather to enable users to maintain privacy, and thus they shall not be compared or equated to other constructs that are aimed to address cybersecurity constructs.

Design Didn't Prevent These Hazard Exposures

Two recent electrical incidents demonstrate how the design of equipment encouraged electrical workers to take actions that violated NFPA 70E principles. The features that encouraged non-compliant work execution will be described, as well as how the equipment was improved to facilitate safe work practices. Design-stage processes that help identify features that will foster rather than compromise safe work practices will be identified as well.
