Electric Motors for Non-Cryogenic Hybrid Electric and Turboelectric Propulsion

NASA Glenn Research Center is investigating hybrid electric and turboelectric propulsion concepts for future aircraft to reduce fuel burn, emissions, and noise. Systems studies show that the weight and efficiency of the electric system components need to be improved for this concept to be feasible. However, advances in motor component materials such as soft magnetic materials, hard magnetic materials, conductors, thermal insulation, and structural materials are expected in the coming years, and should improve motor performance. This study investigates several motor types for a one megawatt application, and projects the motor performance benefits of new component materials that might be available in the coming decades.

Incipient fault detection study for advanced spacecraft systems

A feasibility study to investigate the application of vibration monitoring to the rotating machinery of planned NASA advanced spacecraft components is described. Factors investigated include: (1) special problems associated with small, high RPM machines; (2) application across multiple component types; (3) microgravity; (4) multiple fault types; (5) eight different analysis techniques including signature analysis, high frequency demodulation, cepstrum, clustering, amplitude analysis, and pattern recognition are compared; and (6) small sample statistical analysis is used to compare performance by computation of probability of detection and false alarm for an ensemble of repeated baseline and faulted tests. Both detection and classification performance are quantified. Vibration monitoring is shown to be an effective means of detecting the most important problem types for small, high RPM fans and pumps typical of those planned for the advanced spacecraft. A preliminary monitoring system design and implementation plan is presented.

Impact of Initialized Land Surface Temperature and Snowpack on Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project, Phase I (LS4P-I): organization and experimental design

Subseasonal-to-seasonal (S2S) prediction, especially the prediction of extreme hydroclimate events such as droughts and floods, is not only scientifically challenging, but also has substantial societal impacts. Motivated by preliminary studies, the Global Energy and Water Exchanges (GEWEX)/Global Atmospheric System Study (GASS) has launched a new initiative called “Impact of Initialized Land Surface Temperature and Snowpack on Subseasonal to Seasonal Prediction” (LS4P) as the first international grass-roots effort to introduce spring land surface temperature (LST)/subsurface temperature (SUBT) anomalies over high mountain areas as a crucial factor that can lead to significant improvement in precipitation prediction through the remote effects of land–atmosphere interactions. LS4P focuses on process understanding and predictability, and hence it is different from, and complements, other international projects that focus on the operational S2S prediction. More than 40 groups worldwide have participated in this effort, including 21 Earth system models, 9 regional climate models, and 7 data groups.

Effect of Added Salt on Disordered Poly(ethylene oxide)-Block-Poly(methyl methacrylate) Copolymer Electrolytes

In this report we studied the effect of salt addition on a diblock copolymer system with a negative Flory-Huggins interaction parameter, χ, indicative of attractive interactions between the two blocks. The system studied is poly(ethylene oxide)-block-poly(methyl methacrylate) (PEO-PMMA) with added lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) salt. We studied two asymmetric block copolymers, PEO-PMMA(10-33) and PEO-PMMA(10-64), where the numbers refer to the molar masses of the blocks in kg mol -1 . The small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) profiles for PEO-PMMA(10-33) were featureless at all salt concentrations. In contrast, PEO-PMMA(10-64) exhibited SAXS peaks when the salt concentration was between 0.22 ≤ m (mol Li/kg polymer) ≤ 0.44. The appearance of SAXS peaks only in PEO-PMMA(10-64) is consistent with the predictions of ionic self-consistent field theory developed by de la Cruz and co-workers, which predicts that in systems with negative χ, ordered phases are only found when the volume fraction of the ionic block is about 10%.

Strong interlayer charge transfer due to exciton condensation in an electrically isolated GaAs quantum well bilayer

We introduce a design of electrically isolated “floating” bilayer GaAs quantum wells (QW), in which application of a large gating voltage controllably and highly reproducibly induces charges that remain trapped in the bilayer after removal of the gating voltage. At smaller gate voltages, the bilayer is fully electrically isolated from external electrodes by thick insulating barriers. This design permits full control of the total and differential densities of two coupled 2D electron systems. The floating bilayer design provides a unique approach for studying systems inaccessible by simple transport measurements. It also provides the ability to measure the charge transfer between the layers, even when the in-plane resistivities of the 2D systems diverge. We measure the capacitance and inter-layer tunneling spectra of the QW bilayer with independent control of the top and bottom layer electron densities. Our measurements display strongly enhanced inter-layer tunneling current at v T =1, a signature of exciton condensation of a strongly interlayer-correlated bilayer system. With fully tunable densities of individual layers, the floating bilayer QW system provides a versatile platform to access previously unavailable information on the quantum phases in electron bilayer systems.

Observations of Binary Stars with the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument. IX. Observations of Known and Suspected Binaries, and a Partial Survey of Be Stars

We report 370 measures of 170 components of binary and multiple-star systems, obtained from speckle imaging observations made with the Differential Speckle Survey Instrument at Lowell Observatory’s Discovery Channel Telescope in 2015 through 2017. Of the systems studied, 147 are binary stars, 10 are seen as triple systems, and 1 quadruple system is measured. Seventy-six high-quality nondetections and 15 newly resolved components are presented in our observations. The uncertainty in relative astrometry appears to be similar to our previous work at Lowell, namely, linear measurement uncertainties of approximately 2 mas, and the relative photometry appears to be uncertain at the 0.1–0.15 mag level. Using these measures and those in the literature, we calculate six new visual orbits, including one for the Be star 66 Oph and two combined spectroscopic–visual orbits. The latter two orbits, which are for HD 22451 (YSC 127) and HD 185501 (YSC 135), yield individual masses of the components at the level of 2% or better, and independent distance measures that in one case agrees with the value found in the Gaia DR2 and in the other disagrees at the 2σ level. We find that HD 22451 consists of an F6V+F7V pair with orbital period of 2401.1 ± 3.2 days and masses of 1.342 ± 0.029 and 1.236±0.026 M{sub ⊙}. For HD 185501, both stars are G5 dwarfs that orbit one another with a period of 433.94 ± 0.15 days, and the masses are 0.898 ± 0.012 and 0.876±0.012 M{sub ⊙}. We discuss the details of both the new discoveries and the orbit objects.

Space Station man-machine automation trade-off analysis

The man machine automation tradeoff methodology presented is of four research tasks comprising the autonomous spacecraft system technology (ASST) project. ASST was established to identify and study system level design problems for autonomous spacecraft. Using the Space Station as an example spacecraft system requiring a certain level of autonomous control, a system level, man machine automation tradeoff methodology is presented that: (1) optimizes man machine mixes for different ground and on orbit crew functions subject to cost, safety, weight, power, and reliability constraints, and (2) plots the best incorporation plan for new, emerging technologies by weighing cost, relative availability, reliability, safety, importance to out year missions, and ease of retrofit. A fairly straightforward approach is taken by the methodology to valuing human productivity, it is still sensitive to the important subtleties associated with designing a well integrated, man machine system. These subtleties include considerations such as crew preference to retain certain spacecraft control functions; or valuing human integration/decision capabilities over equivalent hardware/software where appropriate.

Rapid Solidification of Magnetic Oxides

The enhanced control over microstructural evolution inherent in rapid solidification processing techniques are exploited to create novel ceramic magnetic materials. The great sensitivity of magnetic properties to local structure provides a powerful probe both for the study of structure and of microscopic solidification mechanisms. The first system studied is the SrO-Fe2O3 binary, which contains the commercially important hard magnetic compound strontium hexaferrite. The products were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy, Mossbauer spectroscopy, magnetic measurements, and differential thermal analysis. As-quenched ribbons contain high concentrations of super-paramagnetic particles, 80 to 250 Angstroms in diameter, in a glassy matrix. This suggests the possibility of crystallizing monodomain strontium hexaferrite during subsequent heat treatment, with a resulting increase in coercivity over conventionally processed ferrite magnets. That magnetic properties can be controlled in solidification processing by varying the quench rate is demonstrated.
