A system study for the application of microcomputers to research flight test techniques

The onboard simulator is a three degree of freedom aircraft behavior simulator which provides parameters used by the interception procedure. These parameters can be used for verifying closed loop performance before flight. The air to air intercept mode is a software package integrated in the simulation process that generates a target motion and performs a tracking procedure that predicts the most likely next target position, for a defined time step. This procedure also updates relative position parameters and gives adequate fire commands. A microcomputer based on an aircraft spin warning system periodically samples the assymetric thrust and yaw rate of an airplane and then issues voice synthesized warnings and /or suggests to the ilot how to respond to the situation.

Comparison of Boundary Layer Similarity Transformations for High Mach Number Flows

Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations of the turbulent boundary layer flow on a flat plate are performed across a Mach number range of 0.3 up to 16 using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, VULCAN-CFD. The simulation results are used to evaluate the ability of the Van Driest transformation and the transformation of Trettel and Larsson to collapse boundary layer velocity profiles under various flow conditions across the range of Mach numbers. The flat platewall boundary conditions and leading edge geometry are varied from adiabatic to isothermal and sharp to blunted to reveal the physics of how these effects impact the performance of the chosen flow transformations. Results indicate that the transformation of Trettel and Larsson produces a better collapse of velocity profile data than the Van Driest transformation regardless of Mach number, wall boundary condition, or leading edge geometry. In addition, the velocity gradients obtained from the transformation of Trettel and Larsson match the normalized untransformed velocity gradients much more closely than those obtained using the Van Driest transformation.

Designing with Ada for satellite simulation: A case study

A FORTRAN oriented and an Ada oriented design for the same system are compared to learn whether an essentially different design was produced using Ada. The designs were produced by an experiment that involves the parallel development of software for a spacecraft dynamics simulator. Design differences are identified in the use of abstractions, system structure, and simulator operations. Although the designs were vastly different, this result may be influenced by some special characteristics discussed.

MPACT Safeguards Modeling: FY25 Update

Sandia National Laboratories develops and maintains several open-source software packages to support material accountancy analyses. This includes the Material Accountancy Performance Indicator Toolkit (MAPIT), the Fissile Facility Flow Modeler (F3M) and the Separation and Safeguards Performance Model Library (SSPM-L). MAPIT is responsible for performing statistical safeguards analyses on bulk and itemized data from nuclear fuel cycle facilities and can operate on real or synthetic data. MAPIT is the only open-source software for such analyses. F3M is a library of modules, built in MATLAB Simulink, that contain pre made blocks to represent different generic fuel cycle processes. These blocks can be used together in a modular fashion to represent and simulate nuclear fuel cycle processes with the goal of improving facility-level accountancy during the design phase. F3M is also an open-source library. Finally, the SSPM-L library is a series of completed models built from F3M. The library includes facility models such as a generic PUREX facility and a fuel fabrication facility. The SSPM-L library is not open source, but is available to collaborators with a relevant use case. These tools include modeling and simulation pipelines to simulate nuclear fuel cycle facilities and the underlying software needed to simulate measurement uncertainty and perform statistical analyses. Together, these tools can perform end-to-end nuclear material accountancy analyses. This report documents the various improvements made to these tools in FY25. Specifically, we added new statistical test, new statistical modeling capabilities, new fuel cycle facility models, and launched a new open-source model component library.

Improved Axisymmetric and High Temperature Material Structural Modeling in MOOSE and NEML

This report describes improvements made to the solid mechanics formulation in the MOOSE open source finite element simulation environment and the open source Nuclear Engineering Material model Library (NEML) for mechanical constitutive models. The focus of these improvements is to improve the usability and performance of simulations involving one or both pieces of software. Specifically, this work completes a new system for solid mechanics simulations in the MOOSE ecosystem providing exact linearizations and optimal (quadratic) convergence, for a variety of coordinate systems and material types, including large deformation simulations. This work then provides users a framework to build highly efficient mechanical simulations of structures or materials or to couple in additional MOOSE physics modules to build complex, scalable multiphysics simulations.

Simulation of Fluid Flow and Collection Efficiency for a SEA Inc. Multi-Element Probe and Ice Crystal Detector Using GlennICE

Numerical simulation results of fluid flow and collection efficiency of the Science Engineering Associates Inc. Multi-Element Probe (Multiwire) and Ice Crystal Detector (ICD) are presented. Fluid flow simulations were conducted using NASA's FUN3D while collection efficiency simulations were conducted using NASA's LEWICE3D software and GlennICE software. For both probes, 3D unsteady flow results were time averaged. Simulations were computed for freestream velocities ranging from 85 to 185 m/s and freestream total pressures of 44.8 and 93.1 kPa. Collection efficiency results were computed for four spherical particle diameter sizes of 5, 20, 50, and 100 µm. GlennICE collection efficiency results for the multiwire were compared with previously published collection efficiency values calculated using LEWICE3D. Numerical collection efficiency results for the Ice Crystal Detector are presented for the first time.

Overview of Transonic to Hypersonic Stage Separation Tool Development for Multi-Stage-to-Orbit Concepts

An overview of research efforts at NASA in support of the stage separation and ascent aerothermodynamics research program is presented. The objective of this work is to develop a synergistic suite of experimental, computational, and engineering tools and methods to apply to vehicle separation across the transonic to hypersonic speed regimes. Proximity testing of a generic bimese wing-body configuration is on-going in the transonic (Mach numbers 0.6, 1.05, and 1.1), supersonic (Mach numbers 2.3, 3.0, and 4.5) and hypersonic (Mach numbers 6 and 10) speed regimes in four wind tunnel facilities at the NASA Langley Research Center. An overset grid, Navier-Stokes flow solver has been enhanced and demonstrated on a matrix of proximity cases and on a dynamic separation simulation of the bimese configuration. Steady-state predictions with this solver were in excellent agreement with wind tunnel data at Mach 3 as were predictions via a Cartesian-grid Euler solver. Experimental and computational data have been used to evaluate multi-body enhancements to the widely-used Aerodynamic Preliminary Analysis System, an engineering methodology, and to develop a new software package, SepSim, for the simulation and visualization of vehicle motions in a stage separation scenario. Web-based software will be used for archiving information generated from this research program into a database accessible to the user community. Thus, a framework has been established to study stage separation problems using coordinated experimental, computational, and engineering tools.

Distributed Visualization Project

Distributed Visualization allows anyone, anywhere to see any simulation at any time. Development focuses on algorithms, software, data formats, data systems and processes to enable sharing simulation-based information across temporal and spatial boundaries without requiring stakeholders to possess highly-specialized and very expensive display systems. It also introduces abstraction between the native and shared data, which allows teams to share results without giving away proprietary or sensitive data. The initial implementation of this capability is the Distributed Observer Network (DON) version 3.1. DON 3.1 is available for public release in the NASA Software Store (https://software.nasa.gov/software/KSC-13775) and works with version 3.0 of the Model Process Control specification (an XML Simulation Data Representation and Communication Language) to display complex graphical information and associated Meta-Data.

An Integrated Unix-based CAD System for the Design and Testing of Custom VLSI Chips

A computer aided design (CAD) system that is being used at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory for the design of custom and semicustom very large scale integrated (VLSI) chips is described. The system consists of a Digital Equipment Corporation VAX computer with the UNIX operating system and a collection of software tools for the layout, simulation, and verification of microcircuits. Most of these tools were written by the academic community and are, therefore, available to JPL at little or no cost. Some small pieces of software have been written in-house in order to make all the tools interact with each other with a minimal amount of effort on the part of the designer.

Refinement of Objective Motion Cueing Criteria Investigation Based on Three Flight Tasks

The objective of this paper is to refine objective motion cueing criteria for commercial transport simulators based on pilots' performance in three flying tasks. Actuator hardware and software algorithms determine motion cues. Today, during a simulator qualification, engineers objectively evaluate only the hardware. Pilot inspectors subjectively assess the overall motion cueing system (i.e., hardware plus software); however, it is acknowledged that pinpointing any deficiencies that might arise to either hardware or software is challenging. ICAO 9625 has an Objective Motion Cueing Test (OMCT), which is now a required test in the FAA's part 60 regulations for new devices, evaluating the software and hardware together; however, it lacks accompanying fidelity criteria. Hosman has documented OMCT results for a statistical sample of eight simulators which is useful, but having validated criteria would be an improvement. In a previous experiment, we developed initial objective motion cueing criteria that this paper is trying to refine. Sinacori suggested simple criteria which are in reasonable agreement with much of the literature. These criteria often necessitate motion displacements greater than most training simulators can provide. While some of the previous work has used transport aircraft in their studies, the majority used fighter aircraft or helicopters. Those that used transport aircraft considered degraded flight characteristics. As a result, earlier criteria lean more towards being sufficient, rather than necessary, criteria for typical transport aircraft training applications. Considering the prevalence of 60-inch, six-legged hexapod training simulators, a relevant question is "what are the necessary criteria that can be used with the ICAO 9625 diagnostic?" This study adds to the literature as follows. First, it examines well-behaved transport aircraft characteristics, but in three challenging tasks. The tasks are equivalent to the ones used in our previous experiment, allowing us to directly compare the results and add to the previous data. Second, it uses the Vertical Motion Simulator (VMS), the world's largest vertical displacement simulator. This allows inclusion of relatively large motion conditions, much larger than a typical training simulator can provide. Six new motion configurations were used that explore the motion responses between the initial objective motion cueing boundaries found in a previous experiment and what current hexapod simulators typically provide. Finally, a sufficiently large pilot pool added statistical reliability to the results.

TPGITF user's manual

The primary purpose of TPG interface (TPGITF) software is to create test patterns, according to a mathematical model, for a real device. In order for the device actually to be tested or to be accurately simulated, a means is required to transform the TPGITF generated test into forms acceptable as input to logic test equipment or to a software logic simulator. The MACRODATA-200 Logic Test System and the LOGSIM logic simulator are the particular systems supported by the TPGITF software. A description is presented of the TPGITF software processor. It is assumed that the reader is familiar with the TPG, LOGSIM, and TOIL systems. Flow charts are given.

Satellite simulations utilizing CLIPS

Simulations provide necessary testbeds for system designs. Currently we are developing software whose main requirement is to produce CLIPS executable simulation code of a user prespecified system. This process minimizes the amount of engineering effort required to specify a system thereby reducing cost and providing the capability to quickly revise system definitions. Modeling satellite systems is the primary objective toward which testing has, and is, being conducted using satellite specifications. This paper describes the modeling software being developed, its formatted input and the CLIPS system simulation it produces.

Computer-aided system design

A technique has been developed for combining features of a systems architecture design and assessment tool and a software development tool. This technique reduces simulation development time and expands simulation detail. The Architecture Design and Assessment System (ADAS), developed at the Research Triangle Institute, is a set of computer-assisted engineering tools for the design and analysis of computer systems. The ADAS system is based on directed graph concepts and supports the synthesis and analysis of software algorithms mapped to candidate hardware implementations. Greater simulation detail is provided by the ADAS functional simulator. With the functional simulator, programs written in either Ada or C can be used to provide a detailed description of graph nodes. A Computer-Aided Software Engineering tool developed at the Charles Stark Draper Laboratory (CSDL CASE) automatically generates Ada or C code from engineering block diagram specifications designed with an interactive graphical interface. A technique to use the tools together has been developed, which further automates the design process.

Numerical System Solver Developed for the National Cycle Program

As part of the National Cycle Program (NCP), a powerful new numerical solver has been developed to support the simulation of aeropropulsion systems. This software uses a hierarchical object-oriented design. It can provide steady-state and time-dependent solutions to nonlinear and even discontinuous problems typically encountered when aircraft and spacecraft propulsion systems are simulated. It also can handle constrained solutions, in which one or more factors may limit the behavior of the engine system. Timedependent simulation capabilities include adaptive time-stepping and synchronization with digital control elements. The NCP solver is playing an important role in making the NCP a flexible, powerful, and reliable simulation package.

Software reliability: A comparison of results obtained from established software reliability models

Two models of the software error detection process are compared, the Jelinski-Moranda model and a Bayes inference model. Simulation techniques are used to generate software related system failure data which is analyzed by both models. Point estimates and confidence limits are compared. It is demonstrated that uncertainty may be considerable for reasonable samples sizes and should be considered in any application of these techniques. The Jelinski-Moranda model is sensitive to the failure of data to follow internal assumptions of the model, often not providing any point estimates, a factor which may limit its usefulness in many real world situations. The Bayes model is shown to respond to the introduction of additional errors in the software correction process, a condition where error counting models such as the Jelinski-Moranda generally fail to converge.
