A nonlinear steady model for moist hydrostatic mountain waves

The dynamics of hydrostatic gravity waves generated by the passage of a steady, stably stratified, moist flow over a two-dimensional topography is considered. Coriolis effects are neglected. The cloud region is determined by the dynamics, and within that region the Brunt-Vaisala frequency takes on a value smaller than the outside value. In both the dry and cloudy regions the Brunt-Vaisala frequency is constant with height. The moist layer is considered to be either next to the mountain or at midlevels and to be deep enough so that an entire cloud forms in that layer. The nonlinearity in the flow and lower boundary affects the dynamics of these waves and wave drag. The latter is found to depend upon: (1) the location of the moist layer with respect to the ground, (2) the amount of moisture, (3) the degree of nonlinearity and (4) the departure from symmetry in the bottom topography.

A nonlinear analysis of infinitely long graphite-epoxy cylindrical panels loaded with internal pressure

The structural response of internally pressurized composite cylindrical panels, representative of a transport aircraft's fuselage skins, is predicted by means of a one-dimensional, geometrically nonlinear analysis. An analytical study is conducted for the response of 4-, 8-, and 16-ply graphite/epoxy skins. The results obtained indicate that the response is geometrically nonlinear, and that a boundary layer with a severe bending gradient exists at the panel edges. The importance of through-the-thickness shearing deformations in the bending boundary layer is illustrated through comparison of analyses based on Kirchhoff-Love and shear deformation theories. Numerical results for the bending boundary layer lengths of the different panels are presented, and two bending boundary layers are predicted with the shear deformation theory.

Identifying approximate linear models for simple nonlinear systems

This paper addresses the identification (realization) of approximate linear models from response data for certain nonlinear dynamic systems. Response characteristics for several typical nonlinear joints are analyzed mathematically and represented by series expansions. The parameters of the series expansion are then compared with the modal parameters of a linear model identified by the Eigensystem Realization Algorithm. The agreement of the identified model and the analytically derived representation is excellent for the cases studied. Also laboratory data from a model which exhibited stiffening behavior was analyzed using the Eigensystem Realization algorithm and Fast Fourier Transform. The laboratory experiment demonstrated the ability of the technique to recover the model characteristics using real data.

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of deploying flexible space booms

The dynamics of the planar deployment and lock-up of two flexible boom-type appendages on a spacecraft are analyzed by establishing nonlinear equations of motion for the deployment phase and linear for the post-lock-up phase. Nondimensional parameters and threshold values are identified in terms of boom tip deflections, deployment time and root moments for appendages with tip masses attached to a central rigid body through a rotational spring; an account is taken of the nonlinear kinematic and structural terms. It was found that, in general, the solution is influenced only by two mass ratios and one nondimensional stiffness parameter.

The nonlinear tearing mode

A series of nonlinear computations of tearing-mode development have been performed which achieve higher values of the magnetic Reynolds number and larger wavelengths than previously considered. A prime candidate for the realization of dynamic reconnection is the resistive magnetic tearing mode, a spontaneous instability of a stressed magnetic field. Typical simulations are described for a magnetic Lundquist number S of 10 to the 4th and wavelength parameters alpha from 0.05 to 0.5. In all cases, the nonlinear mode initially evolves at the linear growth rate, followed by a period of reduced growth. Another common feature is the formation of secondary flow vortices, near the tearing surface, which are opposite in direction to the initial linear vortices.

Tracking and disturbance rejection of MIMO nonlinear systems with PI controller

The tracking and disturbance rejection of a class of MIMO nonlinear systems with linear proportional plus integral (PI) compensator is studied. Roughly speaking, it is shown that if the given nonlinear plant is exponentially stable and has a strictly increasing dc steady-state I/O map, then a simple PI compensator can be used to yield a stable unity-feedback closed-loop system which asymptotically tracks reference inputs that tend to constant vectors and asymptotically rejects disturbances that tend to constant vectors.

Exact nonlinear command generation and tracking for robot manipulators and spacecraft slewing maneuvers

In connection with the current interest in agile spacecraft maneuvers, it has become necessary to consider the nonlinear coupling effects of multiaxial rotation in the treatment of command generation and tracking problems. Multiaxial maneuvers will be required in military missions involving a fast acquisition of moving targets in space. In addition, such maneuvers are also needed for the efficient operation of robot manipulators. Attention is given to details regarding the direct nonlinear command generation and tracking, an approach which has been successfully applied to the design of control systems for V/STOL aircraft, linearizing transformations for spacecraft controlled with external thrusters, the case of flexible spacecraft dynamics, examples from robot dynamics, and problems of implementation and testing.

A parameterization technique for nonlinear spectral models

An objective parameterization technique is developed for general nonlinear hydrodynamical systems. The typical structure of hydrodynamical systems, regardless of their complexity, is one in which the rates of change of the dependent variables depend on homogeneous quadratic and linear forms, as well as on inhomogeneous forcing terms. As a prototype of the generic problem containing this typical structure, the parameterization technique is applied to various three component subsets of a five component nonlinear spectral model of forced, dissipative quasi-geostrophic flow in a channel. The results obtained lead to specification of the necessary data coverage requirements for applying the technique in general.

Nonlinear acoustic wave propagation in atmosphere

A model problem that simulates an atmospheric acoustic wave propagation situation that is nonlinear is considered. The model is derived from the basic Euler equations for the atmospheric flow and from the regular perturbations for the acoustic part. The nonlinear effects are studied by obtaining two successive linear problems in which the second one involves the solution of the first problem. Well posedness of these problems is discussed and approximations of the radiation boundary conditions that can be used in numerical simulations are presented.

Thermoviscoplastic nonlinear constitutive relationships for structural analysis of high temperature metal matrix composites

A set of thermoviscoplastic nonlinear constitutive relationships (1VP-NCR) is presented. The set was developed for application to high temperature metal matrix composites (HT-MMC) and is applicable to thermal and mechanical properties. Formulation of the TVP-NCR is based at the micromechanics level. The TVP-NCR are of simple form and readily integrated into nonlinear composite structural analysis. It is shown that the set of TVP-NCR is computationally effective. The set directly predicts complex materials behavior at all levels of the composite simulation, from the constituent materials, through the several levels of composite mechanics, and up to the global response of complex HT-MMC structural components.

Nonlinear control of aircraft

Transformations of nonlinear systems were used to design automatic flight controllers for vertical and short takeoff aircraft. Under the assumption that a nonlinear system can be mapped to a controllable linear system, a method using partial differential equations was constructed to approximate transformations in cases where exact ones cannot be found. An application of the design theory to a rotorcraft, the UH-1H helicopter, was presented.

Modeling and equalization of nonlinear bandlimited satellite channels

The problem of modeling and equalization of a nonlinear satellite channel is considered. The channel is assumed to be bandlimited and exhibits both amplitude and phase nonlinearities. A discrete time satellite link is modeled under both uplink and downlink white Gaussian noise. Under conditions of practical interest, a simple and computationally efficient design technique for the minimum mean square error linear equalizer is presented. The bit error probability and some numerical results for a binary phase shift keyed (BPSK) system demonstrate that the proposed equalization technique outperforms standard linear receiver structures.

A simple nonlinear joint model

Hertzian contact theory is applied to a butt joint with specially mismatched bearing surfaces to devise a simple mathematical model of nonlinear axial force-displacement behavior in jointed members. Normalized tangent stiffness-force plots, for several values of a joint imperfection parameter, are presented for the sample case of solid structural members of circular section. The results illustrate the potential problem of high joint compliance at low axial-force levels, as well as the generally desirable stiffening and linearizing effects of preload. A nonlinear oscillator problem based on the static model is also formulated and solved to illustrate the effect of amplitude on natural frequency. As expected, natural frequency is low when amplitude is small. The results call attention to the important roles that tight tolerances and preload are expected to play in the design and fabrication of deployable and erectable truss-type space structures.

Nonlinear effects in the coupled response of tiles bonded to a plate

The coupled response to a large impulse on tiles bonded to a finite plate is studied. The analysis includes geometric nonlinearity born from boundary restraint in the plane, which stiffens the plate transversely. It also includes material nonlinearities born from plasticity of the plate's material and from properties of a polymer bond including memory and dissipation. The equations of motion are solved by the Galerkin method using linearized eigenfunctions of the system as trial functions. A strip of plate which is one tile wide is modeled.
