Integrated propulsion for near-Earth space missions. Volume 2: Technical

The calculation approach is described for parametric analysis of candidate electric propulsion systems employed in LEO to GEO missions. Occultation relations, atmospheric density effects, and natural radiation effects are presented. A solar cell cover glass tradeoff is performed to determine optimum glass thickness. Solar array and spacecraft pointing strategies are described for low altitude flight and for optimum array illumination during ascent. Mass ratio tradeoffs versus transfer time provide direction for thruster technology improvements. Integrated electric propulsion analysis is performed for orbit boosting, inclination change, attitude control, stationkeeping, repositioning, and disposal functions as well as power sharing with payload on orbit. Comparison with chemical auxiliary propulsion is made to quantify the advantages of integrated propulsion in terms of weight savings and concomittant launch cost savings.

An integrated control panel utilizing a programmable varistor-multiplexed dichroic liquid crystal display

Due to the conflicting demands of modern aircraft for increased systems/sensors and the decrease in cockpit panel size, weight, volume, and power, conventional discrete/dedicated methods of display and control are fast becoming obsolete. A means is sought to integrate the control and display into multifunctional programmable devices, thus giving the ability to increase system functions and yet conserve panel space. A potential solution to the control portion of the problem has come to be known as the Integrated Control Panel (ICP) approach. Flat panel display technology and controls using programmable flat panel displays with transparent capacitive touch control overlays offer the largest potential advantages. The flat panel display made of varistor-multiplexed dichroic liquid crystal (LCD) developed by GE in recent years appears to offer the ideal monochrome solution.

An iterative finite element-integral technique for predicting sound radiation from turbofan inlets in steady flight

A new iterative solution technique for predicting the sound field radiated from a turbofan inlet in steady flight is presented. The sound field is divided into two regions: the sound field within and near the inlet which is computed using the finite element method and the radiation field beyond the inlet which is calculated using an integral solution technique. A continuous solution is obtained by matching the finite element and integral solutions at the interface between the two regions. The applicability of the iterative technique is demonstrated by comparison of experimental results with the theoretical results for several different inlet configurations with and without flow. These examples show that good agreement between experiment and theory is obtained within five iterations.

Computer-aided prediction of high-frequency performance limits in silicon bipolar integrated circuits

A circuit model for an existing silicon integrated bipolar junction transistor (IBJT) is used to evaluate presently achievable high frequency circuit performance. The relationship between circuit model and processing parameters are semi-quantitatively explored to make predictions on the frequency response, which can be achieved through realistic device fabrication modifications. A new figure of merit is introduced, which is defined as the signal frequency at which an integrated bipolar junction transistor can deliver a power gain of G. The most sensitive parameter influencing attainable high frequency IBJT performance is base resistance.

Mixed models and reduced/selective integration displacement models for nonlinear shell analysis

One of the objectives of the present investigation is to identify classes of equivalent mixed models and reduced/selective integration displacement models for curved shell structures. A second objective is concerned with the identification of the spurious modes exhibited by various mixed models and their equivalent reduced integration displacement models. The merits of using mixed models are also evaluated. The mixed elements developed in the current investigation differ from those presented by Noor and Hartley (1977) by the fact that the stress resultants are discontinuous at interelement boundaries and, therefore, are eliminated on the element level. The high accuracy and effectiveness of the elements developed is demonstrated by means of numerical examples, taking into account three geometrically nonlinear problems of shallow shells.

An integration scheme to determine the dynamic response of a launch vehicle with several payloads

The coupled equations of motion of a system composed of a launch vehicle and multiple payloads are derived. In the process, it is shown how superfluous interface degrees of freedom on the booster side can be accommodated in the formulation. The discrete system equations are directly integrated, avoiding the solution of an expensive system eigenvalue problem. A modified Newmark-Chan-Beta numerical integration scheme is used to obtain the response. The unique form of the equations of motion allow for a quick and accurate solution both for the response and the internal loads. Although completely general, the presented technique is most effective when the number of interface degrees of freedom is relatively small compared to the overall number of degrees of freedom of the system. The technique is applied to the case of the S.T.S.-S.T.-OMS Kit system. Finally, an evaluation of the presented method is included.

Thermal design and experiment thermal integration of the Long Duration Exposure Facility

The Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) is a large (14 feet diameter by 30 feet long) Shuttle transported, reusable spacecraft. The LDEF can accommodate up to 13,000 pounds of experiments mounted in 86 standard trays. This paper describes the philosophy and approach used for the passive thermal design of the LDEF. Also discussed are the standardized guidelines and techniques used in the thermal design and integration of approximately 50 different thermally passive experiments. A technique for reducing multinode thermal models of experiments to 2 nodes is also presented. This approach allows the efficient thermal integration of large numbers of experiments with the LDEF spacecraft.

Integral dependent spin couplings in CI calculations

Although the number of ways to combine Slater determinants to form spin eigenfunctions increases rapidly with the number of open shells, most of these spin couplings will make only a small contribution to a given state, provided the spin coupling is chosen judiciously. The technique of limiting calculations to the interacting subspace pioneered by Bunge (1970) was employed by Munch and Davidson (1975) to the vanadium atom. The use of an interacting space looses its advantage in more complex cases. However, the problem can always be reduced to only one interacting spin coupling by making the coefficients integral dependent. The present investigation is concerned with the performance of integral dependent interacting couplings, taking into account the results of three test calculations.

Stability of mixed time integration schemes for transient thermal analysis

A current research topic in coupled-field problems is the development of effective transient algorithms that permit different time integration methods with different time steps to be used simultaneously in various regions of the problems. The implicit-explicit approach seems to be very successful in structural, fluid, and fluid-structure problems. This paper summarizes this research direction. A family of mixed time integration schemes, with the capabilities mentioned above, is also introduced for transient thermal analysis. A stability analysis and the computer implementation of this technique are also presented. In particular, it is shown that the mixed time implicit-explicit methods provide a natural framework for the further development of efficient, clean, modularized computer codes.

Improved finite element methodology for integrated thermal structural analysis

An integrated thermal-structural finite element approach for efficient coupling of thermal and structural analyses is presented. New thermal finite elements which yield exact nodal and element temperature for one dimensional linear steady state heat transfer problems are developed. A nodeless variable formulation is used to establish improved thermal finite elements for one dimensional nonlinear transient and two dimensional linear transient heat transfer problems. The thermal finite elements provide detailed temperature distributions without using additional element nodes and permit a common discretization with lower order congruent structural finite elements. The accuracy of the integrated approach is evaluated by comparisons with analytical solutions and conventional finite element thermal-structural analyses for a number of academic and more realistic problems. Results indicate that the approach provides a significant improvement in the accuracy and efficiency of thermal stress analysis for structures with complex temperature distributions.
