Electrically Detected Magnetic Resonance Study of High-Field Stress Induced Si/SiO 2 Interface Defects.

It is widely accepted that the breakdown of Si0 2 gate dielectrics is caused by the buildup of stress-induced defects over time. Although several physical mechanisms have been proposed for the generation of these defects, very little direct experimental evidence as to the chemical and physical identity of these defects has been generated in the literature thus far. Here, we present electrically detected magnetic resonance (EDMR) measurements obtained via spin-dependent recombination currents at the interface of high-field stressed Si/Si0 2 metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs).

Development of a Multi-physics Model to Optimize Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) for Additive Manufacturing (Carbon3D HPC4Mfg Final Report)

Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) is poised to bring additive manufacturing to multiple American manufacturing sectors owing to its unique combination of rapid print speeds and material options that resemble injection molding thermoplastics. In spite of these benefits, CLIP is still a maturing process. To improve our understanding and control of the process, this project developed a multi-physics computational model that encompasses the coupled chemical-physical processes of photopolymerization and fluid flow to predict part outcomes. A physically predictive model can enable rapid optimization of CLIP and reduce the current cycle time and waste associated with optimization by four-fold. Ultimately, this effort will help open the U.S. $400B plastic manufacturing industry to the key benefits of additive manufacturing, namely mass customization, unlimited design space, and a cost- and energy-effective path to mainstream manufacturing. In the course of the project we produced a model which coupled fluid-flow, species transport, and photochemistry to model the Carbon CLIP process. As the development proceeded, we validated the code against theory and experiments. The resulting code was transferred to Carbon, and we expect it to be a useful part of their modeling capability. Future work includes improvements to the fluid solver’s robustness and performance, along with the addition of additional physics models.

Development of the uncertainty quantification toolkit's python interface and surrogate construction tutorial

The uncertainty quantification toolkit (UQTk) is a collection of c++ libraries that assess the confidence of numerical models. Surrogate approximations, often polynomial chaos expansions (PCEs), lessen the computational cost of these assessments. I developed a Python interface in UQTk for regression and Bayesian compressive sensing to add to the existing Galerkin projection method. These methods receive an object containing the polynomial basis information and NumPy arrays of sample points, call c++ methods, and return the PCE coefficients in a NumPy array. To demonstrate these methods, I wrote a tutorial in which I use them to construct surrogates for Genz functions and calculate the resulting error.

De-Energized Line Testing Interface (DELTI) Report

To guarantee the safety of power system operations, it is crucial to understand a de-energized power line’s status before restoring power. It is hypothesized that the Grid Resonance Probe (GRP) and De-Energized Line Testing Interface (DELTI) can be utilized to identify a faulted distribution line. Therefore, the project team is targeting development of a methodology to identify faulted distribution lines by using the DELTI system. In this R&D task, two field tests on Plum Island have been conducted, including DELTI tests with multiple configurations and fault scenarios. This report provides the analysis results of distribution line fault identification from the two field tests. In the remainder of this report, Section 1 is the introduction of the DELTI system, Section 2 provides the analyses of the two field tests in June and October of 2021, respectively, Section 3 discusses the existing line fault detection devices on market and how they compare to DELTI and Section 4 includes the lessons learned and recommendations for future work.

First-Principles Studies of Tritium Species Dissociability & Diffusivity Across the Interface of Nickel-Plated Zircaloy-4

Zirconium (Zr) and its alloys (Zircaloy-4) are widely used in nuclear reactors due to their low neutron adsorption cross-section and excellent corrosion resistance. In tritium-producing burnable absorber rods (TPBARs), the metal getter tube located between the cladding and the γ-LiAlO 2 pellets is composed of nickel (Ni)-plated Zircaloy-4, which is used to capture tritium ( 3 H) species (mainly 3 H 2 and 3 H 2 O) generated from γ-LiAlO 2 pellets during irradiation. The 3 H-related products transfer to the surface of metal Ni upon adsorption and dissociation to form new 3 H species and diffuse into the Zircaloy-4 getters to form metal hydrides (Zr 3 H x ). Therefore, exploring 3 H species ( 3 H 2 , 3 H 2 O) dissociation on the surface of Ni and diffusion across the interface of Ni-plated Zircaloy-4 getters can provide a better understanding of 3H species formation and transport from pellets into the getters.

Non-Equilibrium Nucleation of Rare Earth Metals at Aqueous Interfaces

We conducted mechanical and electrical perturbation experiments on several systems of NdCl 3 aqueous solutions with two phosphonic acids, one as a stable surfactant with high surface activity and another that was fully soluble in aqueous solution. We also conducted experiments with solely the salt in aqueous solution. Our goal was to stimulate surface aggregation at the air/aqueous solution interface that was observable by Brewster angle microscopy, surface tension, and/or surface spectroscopy. We observed changes only with the surface active phosphonic acid. Additional work is needed to further explore confined environments to stimulate surface aggregation events.

Interface Box for Dual Power Amplifier Modulators in Main Injector

The Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) aims to enhance the current Fermilab particle accelerator complex to intensify and accelerate more beam. To achieve this, a second power amplifier will be added to the Main Injector (MI) cavities. However, the control unit could only read signals coming from the previous power supplies, so the interface box was designed to facilitate the issue.

A framework for multirate time integration of interface-coupled problems

The research described here was performed as part of the DOE SciDAC project Coupling Approaches for Next Generation Architectures (CANGA). A framework was developed for the derivation of novel algorithms for the multirate time integration of two-component systems coupled across an interface between spatial domains. The multirate aspect means that different time steps are allowed by each component integrator. The framework provides a way to construct multirate integrators with desirable properties related to stability, accuracy and preservation of system invariants. This report describes the framework and summarizes the major results, examples and research products.

Interface Specifications for RAdiation Portal Technology Enhancement & Replacement (RAPTER) Modules

Radiation Portal Monitors (RPMs) were deployed throughout the port and border infrastructure of the United States (U.S.) beginning in 2003 to monitor for the possible presence of uncontrolled radiological and nuclear materials. Since that time, the U.S. Government (USG) has learned much about the operational challenges faced in the field. Principal among the shortcomings has been the lack of flexibility afforded the USG when all Internet Protocol (IP) rights and interfaces of the system are owned by the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM).
