Program for developing and implementing a new approach to designing for fire safety in buildings

The traditional method of providing for fire safety in buildings through reliance on codes and standards that prescribe specific measures to be taken in the design and construction of buildings to minimize the potential for a fire occurring and to protect property and life should a fire occur was evaluated. A new approach to designing for fire safety in buildings is outlined.

Urban land use monitoring from computer-implemented processing of airborne multispectral data

Machine processing techniques were applied to multispectral data obtained from airborne scanners at an elevation of 600 meters over central Indianapolis in August, 1972. Computer analysis of these spectral data indicate that roads (two types), roof tops (three types), dense grass (two types), sparse grass (two types), trees, bare soil, and water (two types) can be accurately identified. Using computers, it is possible to determine land uses from analysis of type, size, shape, and spatial associations of earth surface images identified from multispectral data. Land use data developed through machine processing techniques can be programmed to monitor land use changes, simulate land use conditions, and provide impact statistics that are required to analyze stresses placed on spatial systems.

An investigation of the optimization of parameters affecting the implementation of fourier transform spectroscopy at 20-500 micron from the C-141 airborne infrared observatory

A program for 20-500 micron spectroscopy from the NASA flying C141 infrared observatory is being carried out with a Michelson interferometer. The parameters affecting the performance of the instrument are studied and an optimal configuration for high performance on the C-141 aircraft is recommended. As each parameter is discussed the relative merits of the two modes of mirror motion (rapid scan or step and integrate) are presented.

The implementation of fail-operative functions in integrated digital avionics systems

System architectures which incorporate fail operative flight guidance functions within a total integrated avionics complex are described. It is shown that the mixture of flight critical and nonflight critical functions within a common computer complex is an efficient solution to the integration of navigation, guidance, flight control, display, and flight management. Interfacing subsystems retain autonomous capability to avoid vulnerability to total avionics system shutdown as a result of only a few failures.

Implementation of Large Scale Integrated (LSI) circuit design software

Portions of the Computer Aided Design and Test system, a collection of Large Scale Integrated (LSI) circuit design programs were modified and upgraded. Major modifications were made to the Mask Analysis Program in the form of additional operating commands and file processing options. Modifications were also made to the Artwork Interactive Design System to correct some deficiencies in the original program as well as to add several new command features related to improving the response of AIDS when dealing with large files. The remaining work was concerned with updating various programs within CADAT to incorporate the silicon on sapphire silicon gate technology.

Consideration of computer limitations in implementing on-line controls

A formal statement of the optimal control problem which includes the interval of dicretization as an optimization parameter, and extend this to include selection of a control algorithm as part of the optimization procedure, is formulated. The performance of the scalar linear system depends on the discretization interval. Discrete-time versions of the output feedback regulator and an optimal compensator, and the use of these results in presenting an example of a system for which fast partial-state-feedback control better minimizes a quadratic cost than either a full-state feedback control or a compensator, are developed.

Implementation of a maximum likelihood convolutional decoder in the DSN

The development status of the decoder and the factors which were considered in defining the specific functional requirements are described. The design is discussed to the block diagram level. A description of the detailed design is provided, along with a description of the test software developed and a brief summary of the performance evaluation testing completed so far.

Implementation of new-generation recorders/reproducers into the DSN

New-generation recorder/reproducers are being installed in the Pre/Post-Detection Recording Subsystem at DSSs 14 (Goldstone), 43 (Australia), 63 (Spain), and the JPL Compatibility Test Area CTA 21. The performance of these new-generation machines is discussed, and representative corroborating data acquired at CTA 21 are presented.

NASA/ESA CV-990 Spacelab simulation. Appendixes: C, data-handling: Planning and implementation; D, communications; E, mission documentation

Data handling, communications, and documentation aspects of the ASSESS mission are described. Most experiments provided their own data handling equipment, although some used the airborne computer for backup, and one experiment required real-time computations. Communications facilities were set up to simulate those to be provided between Spacelab and the ground, including a downlink TV system. Mission documentation was kept to a minimum and proved sufficient. Examples are given of the basic documents of the mission.

Implementation of a stereofluoroscopic system

Clinical applications of a 3-D video imaging technique developed by NASA for observation and control of remote manipulators are discussed. Incorporation of this technique in a stereo fluoroscopic system provides reduced radiation dosage and greater vision and mobility of the user.

Implementation and testing of a Neighborhood Office Center (NOC) and integration of the NOC with an administrative correspondence management information system

The application of telecommunications and telecomputing was investigated as a means of reducing NASA's consumption of natural resources and the proliferation of paper copies of correspondence. The feasibility, operational advantages, and limitations of decentralized (remote) neighborhood offices (NOC) linked through an electronic network are demonstrated. These offices are joined to a management information system for correspondence tracking, and to an administrative office center service based on the use of magnetic medium word processing typewriters which handle the daily typing load. In connection with an augmented teleconference network, a uniform means is provided for creating, storing, and retrieving administrative documents, records, and data, while simultaneously permitting users of the system to track their status. Information will be transferred without using paper - merely through digital electronic communication and display, as a step toward the establishment of an agency-wide electronic mail system.

Application of LANDSAT-2 data to the implementation and enforcement of the Pennsylvania Surface Mining Conservation and Reclamation Act

The author has identified the following significant results. Evaluation of LANDSAT imagery indicates severe limitations in its utility for surface mine land studies. Image stripping resulting from unequal detector response on satellite degrades the image quality to the extent that images of scales larger than 1:125,000 are of limited value for manual interpretation. Computer processing of LANDSAT data to improve image quality is essential; the removal of scanline stripping and enhancement of mine land reflectance data combined with color composite printing permits useful photographic enlargements to approximately 1:60,000.

STS payloads mission control study continuation phase A-1. Volume 2-B: Task 2. Evaluation and refinement of implementation guidelines for the selected STS payload operator concept

The functions of Payload Operations Control Centers (POCC) at JSC, GSFC, JPL, and non-NASA locations are analyzed to establish guidelines for standardization, and facilitate the development of a fully integrated NASA-wide system of ground facilities for all classes of payloads. Operational interfaces between the space transportation system operator and the payload operator elements are defined. The advantages and disadvantages of standardization are discussed.
