One-loop matrix elements of effective superstring interactions: α' -expanding loop integrands

In the low-energy effective action of string theories, non-abelian gauge interactions and supergravity are augmented by infinite towers of higher-mass-dimension operators. We propose a new method to construct one-loop matrix elements with insertions of operators D 2k F n and D 2k R n in the tree-level effective action of type-I and type-II superstrings. Inspired by ambitwistor string theories, our method is based on forward limits of moduli-space integrals using string tree-level amplitudes with two extra points, expanded in powers of the inverse string tension α'. Similar to one-loop ambitwistor computations, intermediate steps feature non-standard linearized Feynman propagators which eventually recombine to conventional quadratic propagators. With linearized propagators the loop integrand of the matrix elements obey one-loop versions of the monodromy and KLT relations. We express a variety of four- and five-point examples in terms of quadratic propagators and formulate a criterion on the underlying genus-one correlation functions that should make this recombination possible at all orders in α'. The ultraviolet divergences of the one-loop matrix elements are crosschecked against the non-separating degeneration of genus-one integrals in string amplitudes. Conversely, our results can be used as a constructive method to determine degenerations of elliptic multiple zeta values and modular graph forms at arbitrary weight.

$c$-functions in flows across dimensions

We explore the notion of c-functions in renormalization group flows between theories in different spacetime dimensions. We discuss functions connecting central charges of the UV and IR fixed point theories on the one hand, and functions which are monotonic along the flow on the other. First, using the geometric properties of the holographic dual RG flows across dimensions and the constraints from the null energy condition, we construct a monotonic holographic c-function and thereby establish a holographic c-theorem across dimensions. Second, we use entanglement entropies for two different types of entangling regions in a field theory along the RG flow across dimensions to construct candidate c-functions which satisfy one of the two criteria but not both. In due process we also discuss an interesting connection between corner contributions to the entanglement entropy and the topology of the compact internal space. As concrete examples for both approaches, we holographically study twisted compactifications of 4d N =4 SYM and compactifications of 6d N = (2, 0) theories.

Revealing Fermi surface evolution and Berry curvature in an ideal type-II Weyl semimetal

Abstract In type-II Weyl semimetals (WSMs), the tilting of the Weyl cones leads to the coexistence of electron and hole pockets that touch at the Weyl nodes. These electrons and holes experience the Berry curvature generated by the Weyl nodes, leading to an anomalous Hall effect that is highly sensitive to the Fermi level position. Here we have identified field-induced ferromagnetic MnBi 2-x Sb x Te 4 as an ideal type-II WSM with a single pair of Weyl nodes. By employing a combination of quantum oscillations and high-field Hall measurements, we have resolved the evolution of Fermi-surface sections as the Fermi level is tuned across the charge neutrality point, precisely matching the band structure of an ideal type-II WSM. Furthermore, the anomalous Hall conductivity exhibits a heartbeat-like behavior as the Fermi level is tuned across the Weyl nodes, a feature of type-II WSMs that was long predicted by theory. Our work uncovers a large free carrier contribution to the anomalous Hall effect resulting from the unique interplay between the Fermi surface and diverging Berry curvature in magnetic type-II WSMs.

Stochastic fluctuations and the relaxation time in transient relativistic fluids

We argue that the ratio between the shear viscosity and the shear relaxation time, η/τ π , should be defined as a thermodynamic quantity obtained from the equal-time symmetric correlator of the shear-stress tensor. In kinetic theory, we show that this ratio does not depend on the type of interaction. Similarly, an exact expression for this ratio is obtained for holographic gauge theories. We also determine how stochastic fluctuations change η/τ π in transient relativistic hydrodynamics and show that thermal fluctuations do not spoil causality and stability.

Influence of Ga doping on magnetic properties, magnetocaloric effect, and electronic structure of pseudobinary GdZn 1 - x Ga x ( x = 0 - 0.1 )

Here, we explore the impact of introducing IIIA-group element Ga in place of IIB-group element Zn in binary intermetallic GdZn on its magnetic and magnetocaloric properties, as well as explicate the modified electronic band structure of the compound. The magnetic transition temperature of the compound decreases with the increase of Ga concentration in GdZn 1-x ⁢Ga x ⁢(x = 0–0.1) while the crystal structure (CsCl prototype) and lattice parameters remain unchanged. Our detailed analysis of magnetization and magnetocaloric data conclusively proves that long-ranged magnetic ordering exists in the sample, despite the magnetic interaction considerably weakening with the increase of Ga. The experimental data are rationalized using both a theoretical machine-learning model and first-principle density functional theory. The electronic band structure of GdZn is manifested with some unusual complex features which gradually diminish with Ga doping and the conventional sinusoidal feature of Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida-type interactions also disappears. A mean-field theory model is developed and can successfully describe the overall magnetocaloric behavior of the GdZn 1-x⁢ Ga x series of samples.

Circumnavigating collinear superspace

In this paper, we extend the collinear superspace formalism to include the full range of N = 1 supersymmetric interactions. Building on the effective field theory rules developed in a companion paper — Navigating Collinear Superspace — we construct collinear superspace Lagrangians for theories with non-trivial F- and D-term auxiliary fields. For (massless) Wess-Zumino models, the key ingredient is a novel type of Grassmann-valued supermultiplet whose lowest component is a (non-propagating) fermionic degree of freedom. For gauge theories coupled to charged chiral matter, the key ingredient is a novel type of vector superfield whose lowest component is a non-propagating gauge potential. This unique vector superfield is used to construct a gauge-covariant derivative; while such an object does not appear in the standard full superspace formalism, it is crucial for modeling gauge interactions when the theory is expres sed on a collinear slice. This brings us full circle, by showing that all types of N = 1 theories in four dimensions can beconstructed in collinear superspace from purely infrared considerations. We speculate that supersymmetric theories with N > 1 could also be implemented using similar collinear superspace constructions.

Electromagnetic and gravitational interactions from Lagrangian mechanics

Highlights: • Background Maxwell and Einstein fields are universal features of Lagrangian systems. • The Lagrangian function is promoted to a dynamic field. • The Einstein–Maxwell theory is derived from Lagrangian mechanics. Background fields of electromagnetic and gravitational type emerge in the low kinetic energy limit of any regular Lagrangian system and, in particular, in the corresponding limit of any spacetime theory in which the free motion of test particles is described by an unspecified regular Lagrangian. Electromagnetic and gravitational type interactions are therefore a universal feature of low kinetic energy Lagrangian systems. These background interactions can be consistently turned into dynamic Einstein–Maxwell fields by promoting the Lagrangian function to a dynamic scalar field on the tangent bundle of the configuration space. Accordingly, Einstein–Maxwell theory can be deduced from the assumption that the motion of elementary test particles in spacetime is described by Lagrangian mechanics. For higher kinetic energy-type values, identified with the square of the invariant mass of the particle, the Lagrangian induces higher rank interactions that seem however too weak to have been detected in spacetime physics, but which might prove relevant at the Planck scale.

Elimination of the linearization error in APW/LAPW basis set: Dirac-Kohn-Sham equations

Here, a detailed account of the implementation of equations of the relativistic density functional theory (RDFT) using basis sets of APW/LAPW type with flexible extensions provided by local orbitals is given. Earlier discoveries of the importance of the high derivative local orbital (HDLO) extension of the APW/LAPW basis set for enhancing the accuracy of DFT calculations are confirmed using a fully relativistic approach and α – U as an example. High energy local orbitals (HELO's), however indispensable for GW calculations, are considerably less efficient in enhancing the accuracy of DFT applications. It is shown that a simplified approach to the relativistic effects, namely considering them only inside the muffin-tin (MT) spheres, produces basically identical results (as compared to fully relativistic approach) for the electronic free energy of the five materials considered in this work. By comparing the effect of the simplified approach on the electronic free energy with its effect on the electronic kinetic energy we conclude that the insensitivity of the free energy to the way we describe the relativistic effects in the interstitial region is related to the variational property of this quantity.

Charged-current non-standard neutrino interactions at Daya Bay

The full data set of the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment is used to probe the effect of the charged current non-standard interactions (CC-NSI) on neutrino oscillation experiments. Two different approaches are applied and constraints on the corresponding CC-NSI parameters are obtained with the neutrino flux taken from the Huber-Mueller model with a 5% uncertainty. For the quantum mechanics-based approach (QM-NSI), the constraints on the CC-NSI parameters $ϵ_{eα}$ and $ϵ^s_{eα}$ are extracted with and without the assumption that the effects of the new physics are the same in the production and detection processes, respectively. The approach based on the weak effective field theory (WEFT-NSI) deals with four types of CC-NSI represented by the parameters [ε X ] eα . For both approaches, the results for the CC-NSI parameters are shown for cases with various fixed values of the CC-NSI and the Dirac CP-violating phases, and when they are allowed to vary freely. We find that constraints on the QM-NSI parameters $ϵ_{eα}$ and $ϵ^s_{eα}$ from the Daya Bay experiment alone can reach the order O(0.01) for the former and O(0.1) for the latter, while for WEFT-NSI parameters [ε X ] eα , we obtain O(0.1) for both cases.

Exceptional magnetic and magnetoelastic behavior of rare-earth non-centrosymmetric Sm 7 Pd 3

Magnetic compounds possessing an intrinsic combination of near-zero magnetization with high magnetic anisotropy are highly desirable for spinronic applications and memory recording. A comprehensive study of Sm 7 Pd 3 binary compound uncovered a unique combination of strong magnetoelastic behavior, very low net magnetization, and exceptionally high magnetic coercivity. The temperature-dependent X-ray synchrotron powder diffraction study indicates the abrupt changes in the compound's lattice parameters at the magnetic ordering temperature of T C =169 K, although the crystal structure remains non-centrosymmetric hexagonal Th 7 Fe 3 -type down to 6 K. Density functional theory calculations confirm high intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy of Sm 7 Pd 3 , which explains the extremely large coercivity of the polycrystalline sample, up to H cr = 130 kOe at 2 K. In conclusion, this discovery brings to life a novel class of highly anisotropic materials that are distinctly different from known spintronic materials, making them interesting future systems for magnetic memory research.

CU-BENs: A structural modeling finite element library

The present work discusses capabilities within the finite element library CU-BENs. CU-BENs focuses on applying the finite element method to structural mechanics problems encountered within the context of inverse problems and partitioned fluid–structure interaction; thus element formulations are primarily of a structural type — truss, frame, and triangular discrete Kirchhoff theory shells. CU-BENs defaults to the skyline sparse storage scheme for the system matrix, but also supports other storage schemes when using external libraries such as LAPACK and UMFPACK. CU-BENs includes built-in nonlinear solution strategies, such as the Newton Raphson method and modified spherical arc length method, that are available within static analyses as well within the context of transient dynamic analyses involving a generalized-α implementation of the Newmark implicit time integration scheme.

Altermagnetism in the layered intercalated transition metal dichalcogenide CoNb 4 Se 8

Altermagnets (AMs) are a new class of magnetic materials that combine the beneficial spintronics properties of ferromagnets and antiferromagnets, garnering significant attention recently. Here, we have identified altermagnetism in a layered intercalated transition metal diselenide, CoNb 4 Se 8 , which crystallizes with an ordered sublattice of intercalated Co atoms between NbSe 2 layers. Single crystals are synthesized, and the structural characterizations are performed using single crystal diffraction and scanning tunneling microscopy. Magnetic measurements reveal easy-axis antiferromagnetism below 168 K. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that A-type antiferromagnetic ordering with easy-axis spin direction is the ground state, which is verified through single crystal neutron diffraction experiments. Electronic band structure calculations in this magnetic state display spin-split bands, confirming altermagnetism in this compound. The layered structure of CoNb 4 Se 8 presents a promising platform for testing various predicted properties associated with altermagnetism.

Fluctuation-induced interactions and the spin-glass transition in Fe 2 TiO 5

In this work, we investigate the spin-glass transition in the strongly frustrated well-known compound Fe 2 TiO 5 . A remarkable feature of this transition, widely discussed in the literature, is its anisotropic properties: The transition manifests itself in the magnetic susceptibly only along one axis, despite Fe 3 + d 5 spins having no orbital component. We demonstrate, using neutron scattering, that below the transition temperature T g = 55 K, Fe 2 TiO 5 develops nanoscale surfboard-shaped antiferromagnetic regions in which the Fe 3 + spins are aligned perpendicular to the axis which exhibits freezing. We show that the glass transition may result from the freezing of transverse fluctuations of the magnetization of these regions and we develop a mean-field replica theory of such a transition, revealing a type of magnetic van der Waals effect.

Nature of native atomic defects in ZrTe 5 and their impact on the low-energy electronic structure

Over the past decades, investigations of the anomalous low-energy electronic properties of ZrTe 5 have reached a wide array of conclusions. An open question is the growth method's impact on the stoichiometry of ZrTe 5 samples, especially given the very small density of states near its chemical potential. In this work, we report on high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy measurements performed on samples grown via different methods. Using density functional theory calculations, we identify the most prevalent types of atomic defects on the surface of ZrTe 5 , namely, Te vacancies and intercalated Zr atoms. Finally, we precisely quantify their density and outline their role as ionized defects in the anomalous resistivity of this material.

Realization of a Quantum Slide Rule for 1+1 Dimensional Quantum Field Theories Using Josephson Superconducting Circuits

We have built a special type of electronic circuit—a “superconducting quantum simulator”—that allows us to mimic the behavior of complex quantum systems that are impossible to compute with ordinary computers. Our device is a long transmission line made of thousands of tiny superconducting junctions, acting as a one-dimensional “vacuum” for microwave photons. By terminating this line with a tunable, weak Josephson junction, we can control how strongly photons interact with each other.

CoSn-type NiIn1–xSbx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.17): Site-Selective Substitution, Electronic Structure, Chemical Bonding, and Structural Transformation

CoSn-type intermetallic compounds have emerged as a model platform for Kagome-derived flat-band physics, where subtle chemical perturbations can strongly influence electronic structure and phase stability. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of Sb-substitution in CoSn-type NiIn1–xSbx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.17) to elucidate the interplay between site selectivity, solubility limit, chemical bonding, and electronic structure. Rietveld refinements on Neutron powder diffraction data confirmed the selective Sb-substitution at the electron-rich In2 (2d) site forming the honeycomb substructure, while the In1 (1a) site within the Kagome layer remains exclusively occupied by In. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that pristine CoSn-type NiIn hosts Ni 3d-dominated flat bands near the Fermi level (EF), originating from the Kagome-like Ni substructure. Partial replacement of In by Sb within the honeycomb layer alters these flat-band features below EF, reducing the density of states and suppressing the flat-band topology near the Fermi level. Orbital-resolved electronic structure and chemical-bonding analyses show that Sb-substitution enhances Ni-p-block (In/Sb) covalency and optimizes charge compensation, stabilizing the CoSn-type structure up to the solubility limit x ≈ 0.17. Beyond the limit, the higher-Sb compositions show satellite reflections consistent with an incommensurately modulated phase. These results establish a link between site-selective chemical substitution, bonding optimization, and flat-band electronic structure evolution, providing fundamental insights into how chemical substitution influences the electronic properties of Kagome-based intermetallic compounds.

Loop amplitudes monodromy relations and color-kinematics duality

Color-kinematics duality is a remarkable conjectured property of gauge theory which, together with double copy, is at the heart of a wealth of new developments in scattering amplitudes. So far, its validity has been verified in most cases only empirically, with limited ab initio understanding beyond tree-level. In this paper we provide initial steps in a first-principle understanding of color-kinematics duality and double-copy at loop level, through a detailed analysis of the field-theory limit of the monodromy relations of string theory at one loop. In this limit, we dissect the type of Feynman graphs generated and the relations they obey. We find that graphs with contact-terms are unavoidable and are generated in the field theory limit of “bulk” contours which do not have a standard physical interpretation in string perturbation theory. We show how they are related to ambiguities in the definition of the loop momentum and that their role is precisely to cancel those ambiguities.

Electronic structure analysis and DFT benchmarking of Rydberg-type alkali-metal-crown ether, -cryptand, and -adamanzane complexes

Density functional theory (DFT) and electron propagator theory (EPT) calculations were performed to study ground and excited electronic structures of alkali-metal (M) coordinated 9-crown-3, 24-crown-8, [2.1.1]cryptand, o-Me 2 -1.1.1, and 3 6 Adamanzane complexes. Each complex bears an expanded electron in the periphery and occupies diffuse 1p-, 1d-, 1f-type molecular orbitals (or superatomic 1P, 1D, 1F orbitals) in excited electronic states. The calculated superatomic shell model of the M(9-crown-3) 2 is 1S, 1P, 1D, 1F, 2S, 2P, 2D, 1G and it is held by all other complexes up to the studied 1F level. Due to the highly diffuse nature of the electron, the ionization energies of these complexes are significantly lower (1.6–2.0 eV) and hence these complexes belong to the superalkali category. Further, the ab initio EPT ionization energy and the excitation energies of the Li(9-crown-3) 2 were used to evaluate DFT errors associated with a series of exchange correlation functionals that span multiple rungs of Jacob's ladder (i.e., GGA, meta-GGA, global GGA hybrid, meta-GGA hybrid, range-separated hybrid, double-hybrid). Among these, the best performing functional is the range-separated hybrid CAM-B3LYP and the errors are within 6% of high-level ab initio EPT results. The accuracy of CAM-B3LYP is indeed transferable to similar complexes and hence the findings are expected to accelerate the progression of studies of Rydberg-type systems.
