Above-threshold ionization at laser intensity greater than 10 20 W / cm 2

Here we present experimental observation of above-threshold ionization (ATI) electrons produced by ionization of the neon K shell in a laser field where intensity exceeds 10 20 W/cm 2 . An array of plastic scintillating calorimeter detectors was used to measure the high-energy electrons at four angles in the laser forward direction. Coarse energy resolution was obtained using aluminum filters of several thicknesses to block lower-energy electrons. A threshold intensity around 2×10 20 W/cm 2 is observed for production of energetic ATI electrons in the laser forward direction, with maximum electron energy exceeding 10 MeV. L-shell electrons with energies <1.4 MeV are scattered farther forward along the laser direction than expected. We present comparisons of the measured total electron energies to the predictions of Monte Carlo models employing the ADK-PPT ionization model and the Augst barrier suppression ionization model.

Near-Threshold Photoemission from Graphene-Coated Cu(110)

In this article, the brightness of electron beams emitted from photocathode sources plays a critical role in determining the performance of x-ray free-electron lasers and ultrafast electron-diffraction applications. In order to achieve the maximum brightness, the electrons need to be emitted from a photocathode with the lowest-possible mean transverse energy (MTE). Recent investigations have shown that capping a Cu(110) photocathode with a monolayer of graphene can protect the quantum efficiency (QE) from long-term exposure to varying vacuum conditions. However, there have been no studies that investigate the effects that a monolayer of graphene has on the MTE. Here, we report on measurements of a graphene-coated Cu(110) single crystal near the photoemission threshold for room and liquid-nitrogen temperatures. At room temperature, a minimum MTE of 25 meV is measured at 295 nm. At liquid-nitrogen temperatures, a minimum MTE of 9 meV is measured at the photoemission threshold of 290 nm.

Determination of the cluster-decay branching ratio from a near-threshold molecular state in Be10

A puzzle has long existed for the α-cluster content in the near-threshold 7.54-MeV state of 10Be. A new measurement was conducted to measure the cluster-decay partial width of this state using the reaction 9 Be( 9 Be, 10 B *→α+ 6 He) 8 Be at 45-MeV beam energy. Special measures were taken to reduce the strong near-threshold background. Additionally, the neutron-decay strength was also obtained based on the threefold coincident measurement. A cluster-decay branching ratio of ( 4.04 ± 1.26 ) × 10 -4 is obtained, resulting in a reasonably large α -cluster spectroscopic factor. The present Rapid Communication confirms the formation of the σ -bond molecular rotational band headed by the 6.18-MeV state in 10 Be .

Ne 21 energy levels approaching the α -particle threshold

Nuclei around Ne 20 exhibit an interplay of different excitations caused by different aspects of nuclear structure, including single-particle and multiparticle configurations and collective rotations. One-nucleon transfer reactions selectively probe single-particle structures in these nuclei. These nuclei are also important to astrophysics, with a number of important reactions proceeding through this mass region. Energy levels approaching the α -particle threshold in Ne 21 are of importance to nuclear structure. The Ne 20 ( d , p ) Ne 21 reaction was measured and the corresponding spectroscopic nuclear information was extracted. States in Ne 21 were populated using the Ne 20 ( d , p ) Ne 21 reaction in forward kinematics. Protons were identified in the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) Enge split-pole spectrograph and angular distributions were extracted. Spin-party assignments were made and neutron partial widths were determined based on distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) analysis. Several new energy levels were observed at energies of 7176, 7235, 7250, and 7337 keV, and spin-parities are reported which generally agree with previous results where literature was available. Spin and parity assignments are reported for several energy levels along with estimated neutron widths for those states above the neutron threshold ( S n = 6761 keV ). Results from this study are placed in context with a review of the available literature on all known states in this energy region of Ne 21 . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Origin and resummation of threshold logarithms in the lattice QCD calculations of PDFs

Many present lattice QCD approaches to calculate the parton distribution functions (PDFs) rely on a factorization formula or effective theory expansion of certain Euclidean matrix elements in boosted hadron states. In the quasi- and pseudo-PDF methods, the matching coefficient in the factorization or expansion formula includes large logarithms near the threshold, which arise from the subtle interplay of collinear and soft divergences of an underlying 3D momentum distribution. We use the standard prescription to resum such logarithms in the Mellin-moment space at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, which also accounts for the Dokshitzer-Gribov-Lipatov-Altarelli-Parisi evolution, and we show that it can suppress the PDF at large x . Unlike the deep inelastic scattering and Drell-Yan cross sections, the resummation formula is away from the Landau pole. We then apply our formulation to reanalyze the recent lattice results for the pion valence PDF, and find that within the current data sensitivity, the effect of threshold resummation is marginal for the accessible moments and the PDF at large x.

Design and characterization of a phonon-mediated cryogenic particle detector with an eV-scale threshold and 100 keV-scale dynamic range

We present the design and characterization of a cryogenic phonon-sensitive Si detector exploiting the Neganov-Tromov-Luke effect to detect single-charge excitations. This device achieved 2.65(2) eV phonon energy resolution when operated without a voltage bias across the crystal and a corresponding charge resolution of 0.03 electron-hole pairs at 100 V bias. With a continuous-readout data acquisition system and an oine optimum-filter trigger, we obtain a 9.2 eV threshold with a trigger rate of the order of 20 Hz. The detector's energy scale is calibrated up to 120 keV using an energy estimator based on the pulse area. The high performance of this device allows its application to different fields where excellent energy resolution, low threshold, and large dynamic range are required, including dark matter searches, precision measurements of coherent neutrino-nucleus scattering, and ionization yield measurements.

Threshold photoproduction of η c and η b using holographic QCD

We discuss the possibility that threshold photoproduction of η c , b may be sensitive to the pseudovector 1 + − glueball exchange. We use the holographic construction to identify the pseudovector glueball with the Kalb-Ramond field, minimally coupled to bulk Dirac fermions. We derive the holographic C-odd form factor and its respective charge radius. Using the pertinent Witten diagrams, we derive and analyze the differential photoproduction cross section for η c , b in the threshold regime, including the interference from the dual bulk photon exchange with manifest vector dominance. The possibility of measuring this process at current and future electron facilities is discussed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Near-threshold states in coupled D D * − D * D * scattering from lattice QCD

The first determination of doubly charmed isospin-0 coupled-channel D D * − D * D * scattering amplitudes from lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) is presented. The finite-volume spectrum is computed for three lattice volumes with a light-quark mass corresponding to m π ≈ 391 MeV and is used to extract the scattering amplitudes in J P = 1 + via the Lüscher quantization condition. By analytically continuing the scattering amplitudes to complex energies, a T c c pole corresponding to a virtual bound state is found below D D * threshold. We also find a second pole, T c c ′ , corresponding to a resonance pole below the kinematically closed D * D * channel, to which it has a strong coupling. A nonzero coupling is robustly found between the S -wave D D * and D * D * channels producing a clear cusp in the D D * amplitude at the D * D * threshold energy. This suggests that the experimental T c c ′ should be observable in D D * and D * D * final states at ongoing experiments. Published by the American Physical Society 2025

Estimating the energy threshold of phonon-mediated superconducting qubit detectors operated in an energy-relaxation sensing scheme

In recent years, the lack of a conclusive detection of weakly interacting massive particle dark matter at the 10 GeV/c 2 mass scale and above has encouraged development of low-threshold detector technology aimed at probing lighter dark matter candidates. Detectors based on Cooper-pair-breaking sensors have emerged as a promising avenue for this detection due to the low (meV-scale) energy required for breaking a Cooper pair in most superconductors. Among them, devices based on superconducting qubits are interesting candidates for sensing due to their observed sensitivity to broken Cooper pairs. Here, we have developed an end-to-end G 4 CMP -based simulation framework and have used it to evaluate performance metrics of qubit-based devices operating in a gate-based “energy relaxation” readout scheme, akin to those used in recent studies of qubit sensitivity to ionizing radiation. We find that for this readout scheme, the qubit acts as a phonon sensor with an energy threshold ranging down to ≃ 0.4 eV for near-term performance parameters.

Polarization-Dependent Self-Injection by Above Threshold Ionization Heating in a Laser Wakefield Accelerator

Here, we report on the experimental observation of a decreased self-injection threshold by using laser pulses with circular polarization in laser wakefield acceleration experiments in a nonpreformed plasma, compared to the usually employed linear polarization. A significantly higher electron beam charge was also observed for circular polarization compared to linear polarization over a wide range of parameters. Theoretical analysis and quasi-3D particle-in-cell simulations reveal that the self-injection and hence the laser wakefield acceleration is polarization dependent and indicate a different injection mechanism for circularly polarized laser pulses, originating from larger momentum gain by electrons during above threshold ionization. This enables electrons to meet the trapping condition more easily, and the resulting higher plasma temperature was confirmed via spectroscopy of the XUV plasma emission.

Beam Spray Thresholds in ICF-Relevant Plasmas

Beam spray measurements suggest thresholds that are a factor of ≈2 to 15× less than expected based on the filamentation figure of merit often quoted in the literature. In this moderate-intensity regime, the relevant mechanism is forward stimulated Brillouin scattering (FSBS). Both weak ion acoustic wave damping and thermal enhancement of ion acoustic waves contribute to the low thresholds. FSBS imparts a redshift to the transmitted beam. Here, regarding the specific possibility of beam spray occurring outside the laser entrance holes of an indirectly driven hohlraum, this shift may be the most concerning feature owing to the high sensitivity of crossed-beam energy transfer to the interacting beam wavelengths in the subsequent overlap region.

Near-Threshold Dipole Strength in 10 Be with Isoscalar Character

Isoscalar dipole transitions are a distinctive fingerprint of cluster structures. A 1 − resonance at 7.27(10) MeV, located just below the 𝛼-emission threshold, has been observed in the deuteron inelastic scattering reactions off 10 Be. The deformation lengths of the excited states in 10 Be below 9 MeV have been inferred from the differential cross sections using coupled channel calculations. This observed 1 − resonance has isoscalar characteristics and exhausts approximately 5%–15% of the isoscalar dipole energy-weighted sum rule, providing evidence for pronounced 𝛼 cluster structure in 10 Be. The Gamow coupled channel approach supports this interpretation and suggests the near-threshold effect might be playing an important role in this excitation energy domain. Here, the 𝛼 +𝛼 +𝑛 +𝑛 four-body calculation reproduces the observed enhanced dipole strength, implying that the four-body cluster structure is essential to describe the 1 − states in 10 Be.

First Measurement of Near-Threshold and Subthreshold 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction off Nuclei

We report on the first measurement of J/ψ photoproduction from nuclei in the photon energy range of 7 to 10.8 GeV, extending above and below the photoproduction threshold in the free proton of ∼ 8.2 GeV. The experiment used a tagged photon beam incident on deuterium, helium, and carbon, and the GlueX detector at Jefferson Lab to measure the semi-inclusive A(γ, e + e − p) reaction with a dilepton invariant mass M(e + e − ) ∼ m J/ψ = 3.1 GeV. The incoherent J/ψ photoproduction cross sections in the measured nuclei are extracted as a function of the incident photon energy, momentum transfer, and proton reconstructed missing light-cone momentum fraction. Comparisons with theoretical predictions assuming a dipole form factor allow extracting a gluonic radius for bound protons of p $\sqrt4⟨r^2⟩$ = 0.85 ± 0.14 fm. The data also suggest an excess of the measured cross section for sub-threshold production and for interactions with high missing light-cone momentum fraction protons. The measured enhancement can be explained by modified gluon structure for high-virtuality bound-protons.

Low Threshold, Long Wavelength Interband Cascade Lasers With High Voltage Efficiencies

Here, we report on the substantial advancement of long wavelength InAs-based interband cascade lasers (ICLs) utilizing advanced waveguides formed from hybrid cladding layers and targeting the 10-12 µm wavelength region. Modifications in the hole injector have improved carrier transport in these ICLs, resulting in significantly reduced threshold voltages (V th ) as low as 3.62 V at 80 K. Consequently, much higher voltage efficiencies were observed, peaking at about 73% at 10.3 µm and allowing for large output powers of more than 100 mW/facet. Also, low threshold current densities (J th ) of 8.8 A/cm 2 in cw mode and 7.6 A/cm 2 in pulsed mode near 10 µm were observed; a result of adjustments in the GaInSb hole well composition intended to reduce the overall strain accumulation in the ICL. Furthermore, an ICL from the second wafer operating at a longer wavelength achieved a peak voltage efficiency of 57% at 11.7 µm, with a peak output power of more than 27 mW/facet. This ICL went on to lase beyond 12 µm in both cw and pulsed modes, representing a new milestone in long wavelength coverage for ICLs with the standard W-QW active region.

On Quantum Rainbows: Density Operator in the Frequency-Bin Representation for Entangled Twin-Photons Generated With Sub-Threshold Microcombs

Kerr optical frequency combs are generated by pumping a high-Q integrated microresonator with a resonant laser. Below threshold, the pump laser field mediates the phenomenon of spontaneous four-wave mixing, where two pump photons are symmetrically up- and down-converted as twin photons that can be entangled across up to tens of eigenmodes in the spectral domain. While these room-temperature integrated photonic circuits are expected to play a central role in quantum technology, their high dimensionality and dissipative nature are a challenge for their theoretical description, therefore hindering the understanding of their properties and potential of performance. In this article, we develop a framework that permits to obtain an explicit solution for the density operator of quantum microcombs below threshold. Furthermore, this self-consistent theoretical description allows for their complete characterization, as well as for the analytical determination of various performance metrics such as fidelity, purity, and entropy.

A review of cladding failure thresholds in RIA conditions based on transient reactor test data and the need for continued testing

Transient reactor experiments on light water reactor (LWR) fuel pins had been conducted since the beginning of the nuclear era to help determine core coolability and cladding failure thresholds. During one such test in November of 1993 at the CABRI transient test reactor on a test involving a high burnup fuel rod with a corroded Zircaloy-4 cladding it was first observed that cladding failures could occur prior to a departure from nucleate boiling (pre-DNB) at lower-than-expected peak radial average enthalpies. This paper will present an independent review of the publicly available transient reactor test database on higher burnup LWR pins conducted at the CABRI and NSRR reactors as well as review of a selection of published out of pile mechanical testing methods. The purpose of the review is to determine how well the new regulatory limits are supported by experimental data. The review will identify if additional transient reactor tests could provide additional support for the NRC guidance or identify the need for revisions. The evaluation will consider how far the existing database can be extrapolated when considering low hydrogen zirconium alloy claddings (with and without protective coatings) containing very high burnup (> 70 MWd/kgU) UO2 fuel pellets. Finally, the authors will suggest how out of pile mechanical tests can be used in conjunction with a limited number of transient reactor tests to develop cladding specific failure thresholds in RIA type transients.

J/psi photoproduction close to threshold at GlueX

Close-to-threshold photoproduction probes small-size gluon configurations in the proton. Under certain assumptions it allows us to study the proton properties, as gluonic GPDs, anomalous contribution to the mass of the proton, gravitational form factors, and the mass radius of the proton. A careful comparison of the experimental data with the theoretical predictions would help us to verify the validity of those assumptions. The first cross-section measurements of near-threshold reaction by the GlueX Collaboration (Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 072001 (2019)) has attracted a considerable theoretical interest. Along with the relation to the gluonic properties of the proton, the measurement exploited a possibility of the LHCb Pentaquark production in the s-channel of the observed reaction, placing a limit of the decay probability . Here we present new GlueX results based on a four-times larger data set. The higher statistics along with the full acceptance of the GlueX spectrometer allow us to measure the differential cross section in several energy ranges and compare the results with several theoretical calculations.

Near-threshold photoproduction of J/ of a proton with the CLAS12 experiment

The photo-production of vector mesons off the proton has long been established as an important tool to access the gluon content of the nucleon. In particular, the photo-production of J/Psi near the threshold energy has been related to the Gravitational Form Factors of the gluons which provide information about the mass and the force distributions in the nucleon. In this talk, I will present results on the near-threshold photoproduction of J/Psi using data taken in 2018 and 2019 by the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with an electron beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. This measurement is expected to provide direct insight on the gluons distribution inside the proton.
