Integrable power gyrator

Further study of Y-matrix and Z-matrix configuration has led to development of efficient, dependable high-quality gyrators. Efficiency of new gyrators may approach theoretical limit of 78.5% with further improvements. Both designs are comparatively easy to integrate by implementing technology used with conventional operational amplifiers.

Multiwire proportional chamber development

The development of large area multiwire proportional chambers, to be used as high resolution spatial detectors in cosmic ray experiments is described. A readout system was developed which uses a directly coupled, lumped element delay-line whose characteristics are independent of the MWPC design. A complete analysis of the delay-line and the readout electronic system shows that a spatial resolution of about 0.1 mm can be reached with the MWPC operating in the strictly proportional region. This was confirmed by measurements with a small MWPC and Fe-55 X-rays. A simplified analysis was carried out to estimate the theoretical limit of spatial resolution due to delta-rays, spread of the discharge along the anode wire, and inclined trajectories. To calculate the gas gain of MWPC's of different geometrical configurations a method was developed which is based on the knowledge of the first Townsend coefficient of the chamber gas.

Kinetics of CO2 production on Venus.

Consideration of theoretical limits and experimental data for the kinetics of the reaction quartz plus calcite yields wollastonite plus CO2 supports the concept of a short-term quasi-equilibrium state for the atmosphere of Venus. These data indicate that the time scale of this reaction and of any competing CO2 producing reaction may be as short as several hundred years or less at the inferred Venus surface temperatures.

Traction and film thickness measurements under starved elastohydrodynamic conditions

Traction measurements under starved elastohydrodynamic conditions were obtained for a point contact geometry. Simultaneous measurements of the film thickness and the locations of the inlet lubricant boundary were made optically. The thickness of a starved film for combination rolling and sliding conditions varies with the location of the inlet boundary in the same way found previously for pure rolling. A starved film was observed to possess greater traction than a flooded film for the same slide roll ratio. For a given slide roll ratio a starved film simply increases the shear rate in the Hertz region. The maximum shear rate depends on the degree of starvation and has no theoretical limit. Traction measurements under starved conditions were compared with flooded conditions under equivalent shear rates in the Hertz region. When the shear rates in the Hertz region were low and the film severely starved, the measured tractions were found to be much lower than expected.

Method and apparatus for decoding compatible convolutional codes

This invention relates to learning decoders for decoding compatible convolutional codes. The decoder decodes signals which have been encoded by a convolutional coder and allows performance near the theoretical limit of performance for coded data systems. The decoder includes a sub-bit shift register wherein the received sub-bits are entered after regeneration and shifted in synchronization with a clock signal recovered from the received sub-bit stream. The received sub-bits are processed by a sub-bit decision circuit, entered into a sub-bit shift register, decoded by a decision circuit, entered into a data shift register, and updated to reduce data errors. The bit decision circuit utilizes stored sub-bits and stored data bits to determine subsequent data-bits. Data errors are reduced by using at least one up-date circuit.

Rhythmic variation in heart rate and respiration rate during space flight - Apollo 15

As part of the operational biomedical monitoring for Apollo manned missions, ECG and respiration rate are telemetered at selected intervals to mission control. The data were collected as part of this monitoring program. These data were evaluated for circadian and ultradian rhythmicity because of their uniqueness. The ability to detect and quantitate biorhythms in living systems during space flight is an important aspect of evaluating hypotheses concerning the underlying mechanisms of these phenomena. Circadian variation in heart rate during space flight is demonstrated here. In analyzing generated time series data it has been found that period discrimination is much better than the theoretical limit.

Traction and film thickness measurements under starved elastohydrodynamic conditions

Results of traction and film thickness measurements made for a point contact geometry under starved elastohydrodynamic rolling and sliding conditions are reviewed. These results indicate that the variation of film thickness with the location of the inlet lubricant boundary under combination rolling and sliding behaves identically with that found previously under pure rolling conditions. The maximum shear rate is shown to depend on the degree of starvation and has no theoretical limit. The relative increase in traction due to starvation is influenced by thermal and fluid rheological conditions within the Hertz region.

Skylab S-192 ratio codes of soil, mineral, and rock spectra for ratio image selection and interpretation

A limited theoretical systems study is made of the Skylab S-192 12-channel multispectral scanner's capabilities for geological remote sensing. Laboratory spectra of rocks, minerals, soils, and some vegetation were used to rank the twelve channels and the best twelve of the 66 possible nonreciprocal spectral ratios according to their ability to discriminate among 17 classes of geological targets. Environmental and instrumental noise sources were ignored. The S-192 should be most useful for discriminating minerals deposited by hydrothermal alteration, weathering, and evaporation. Discrimination of igneous rocks will be difficult. Ratio images are recommended over automatic discrimination methods for those geological targets that can be enhanced by ratio imaging. Ratio codes were found for the twelve highest ranked ratios, for use in selecting the ratio images which will best enhance a target of interest. They can also be searched for false alarm candidates for a given target.

Electromagnetic wave energy conversion research

Known electromagnetic wave absorbing structures found in nature were first studied for clues of how one might later design large area man-made radiant-electric converters. This led to the study of the electro-optics of insect dielectric antennae. Insights were achieved into how these antennae probably operate in the infrared 7-14um range. EWEC theoretical models and relevant cases were concisely formulated and justified for metal and dielectric absorber materials. Finding the electromagnetic field solutions to these models is a problem not yet solved. A rough estimate of losses in metal, solid dielectric, and hollow dielectric waveguides indicates future radiant-electric EWEC research should aim toward dielectric materials for maximum conversion efficiency. It was also found that the absorber bandwidth is a theoretical limitation on radiant-electric conversion efficiency. Ideally, the absorbers' wavelength would be centered on the irradiating spectrum and have the same bandwith as the irradiating wave. The EWEC concept appears to have a valid scientific basis, but considerable more research is needed before it is thoroughly understood, especially for the complex randomly polarized, wide band, phase incoherent spectrum of the sun. Specific recommended research areas are identified.

Superconductivity in sputtered CuMo6S8

The superconducting transition temperature and the superconducting upper critical fields for sputtered films of copper-containing ternary molybdenum chalcogenides (chevrel phases) were determined. The theory presented by Werthamer, Helfand, and Hohenberg (WHH) (1966) was used to make computer-generated plots of the superconducting upper critical field values versus the superconducting transition temperature values for various values of the Maki paramagnetic pair-breaking parameter and the spin-orbit scattering parameter. The interpretation of the graph suggests that the experimental data for at least one sample are above the maximum WHH theoretical limit in the lower temperature range. Possible explanations of this situation are discussed. In other calculations, a scaling law was found suitable for determining pinning force densities; this data was used to calculate critical current values. The relation between resistivity and temperature was studied.

A Closed Network Queue Model of Underground Coal Mining Production, Failure, and Repair

Underground coal mining system production, failures, and repair cycles were mathematically modeled as a closed network of two queues in series. The model was designed to better understand the technological constraints on availability of current underground mining systems, and to develop guidelines for estimating the availability of advanced mining systems and their associated needs for spares as well as production and maintenance personnel. It was found that: mine performance is theoretically limited by the maintainability ratio, significant gains in availability appear possible by means of small improvements in the time between failures the number of crews and sections should be properly balanced for any given maintainability ratio, and main haulage systems closest to the mine mouth require the most attention to reliability.

The ring systems of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus

The ring systems of Jupiter, Saturn and Uranus are compared, and their origins are discussed. The locations and widths of the rings are considered in relation to various theoretical limits, noting that all the rings lie outside the lower accretion limit and the limits at which incident and orbiting bodies will break up, and inside the upper accretion limit. The ring densities at which the rings lie within their respective Roche limits, however, are found to vary greatly among the various ring systems. The above considerations lead to the conclusions that the rings of Saturn are composed primarily of ice and are the products of condensation from the protoplanetary nebula, while those of Jupiter and Uranus are the products of the breakup of nonspherical bodies.

Analyses of moisture in polymers and composites

A suitable method for the direct measurement of moisture concentrations after humidity/thermal exposure on state of the art epoxy and polyimide resins and their graphite and glass fiber reinforcements was investigated. Methods for the determination of moisture concentration profiles, moisture diffusion modeling and moisture induced chemical changes were examined. Carefully fabricated, precharacterized epoxy and polyimide neat resins and their AS graphite and S glass reinforced composites were exposed to humid conditions using heavy water (D20), at ambient and elevated temperatures. These specimens were fixtured to theoretically limit the D20 permeation to a unidirectional penetration axis. The analytical techniques evaluated were: (1) laser pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry; (2) solids probe mass spectrometry; (3) laser pyrolysis conventional infrared spectroscopy; and (4) infrared imaging thermovision. The most reproducible and sensitive technique was solids probe mass spectrometry. The fabricated exposed specimens were analyzed for D20 profiling after humidity/thermal conditioning at three exposure time durations.

Deconvolution of gas chromatographic data

The use of deconvolution methods on gas chromatographic data to obtain an accurate determination of the relative amounts of each material present by mathematically separating the merged peaks is discussed. Data were obtained on a gas chromatograph with a flame ionization detector. Chromatograms of five xylenes with differing degrees of separation were generated by varying the column temperature at selected rates. The merged peaks were then successfully separated by deconvolution. The concept of function continuation in the frequency domain was introduced in striving to reach the theoretical limit of accuracy, but proved to be only partially successful.

High-resolution optical telescope for ultraviolet /UV/ radiation field

Design techniques are discussed for all-reflecting optics from first-order system considerations and applications currently utilized in the field of astronomical optics. The solution of the Dall-Karkham design problem is described, showing the advantage of inexpensive construction as compared with higher order surfaces. The design process reported here is a F/5 collecting system which quickly mates directly with the spectrometer; it is capable of achieving desired high resolution and sensitivity requirements. The theoretical limit of aberration tolerances is achieved with less than 1/8 of a wavelength at final focus (OPD). The design of spectrometer for ultra-violet (UV) radiation and its mechanism is included in this study.
