Solid-state NMR and theoretical studies illuminate lanthanum borohydride C–H borylation catalysts confined within a zeolite

Zeolite-supported single-site lanthanum borohydride catalyzes C–H borylation of hydrocarbons, while the related silica-supported complex is inactive under comparable conditions. The identical composition of support-La(BH 4 ) 2 (THF) 2 sites in the two materials implies that the support bestows underlying structural features onto La that are required for bond activation catalysis, yet the nature of these effects, which could include confinement effects and/or electronic modulation of the site itself, remains to be identified. We used solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (SSNMR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics simulations with machine-learning potentials (ML-MD) to analyze the electronic and steric effects imparted by the faujasite support on the precatalyst structure to correlate with catalytic activity. ML-MD simulations show that THF dissociates from La under the influence of confinement, leading to coordinatively unsaturated sites in the zeolite pores. Then, the La complex grafts on Brønsted acid sites (La BAS ) or isolated silanols (La SiO ) or remains physisorbed in the zeolite pores. Catalytic studies comparing compounds supported on faujasite zeolites containing or lacking BAS and/or silanols show that only the former complexes lead to active sites, ruling out confinement as the sole requirement for catalysis. The DFT calculations and ML-MD simulations also reveal that the surface-lanthanum coordination number is two (bidentate) for La BAS , with the metal center forming long, flexible bonds to two oxygen atoms bridging Si and Al, but only one oxygen atom (monodentate) for La SiO . The structure–activity relationship identifies confined, BAS-grafted species as active sites and provides important guidance for the design of enhanced atom-efficient catalysts.

Mechanistic study of heterogeneous propene metathesis on WO x /SiO 2 catalysts

Silica-supported tungsten oxides are widely used industrial catalysts for olefin metathesis due to their low cost and robustness, yet the mechanisms for heterogeneously catalyzed metathesis reactions remain comparatively less understood. In this work, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to study the model reactions of propene metathesis. Our calculations confirm that the metathesis reactions catalyzed by WO x /SiO 2 largely follow the Chauvin cycle, with an overall energetic barrier of 142 kJ/mol. To understand how the initial alkylidene active sites are generated, three mechanisms were examined: The pseudo-Wittig mechanism was found to be most favorable and proceeds with a metallacycle intermediate, while the allylic and vinylic C-H activations are much more difficult and require the reduction of surface sites to W(+4). Relative to the adsorbed reactant state, the overall intrinsic barriers for three mechanisms were computed to be 193, 261, and 355 kJ/mol, respectively. In conclusion, the higher barriers for active-site formation than for the metathesis cycle are consistent with the difficult, high-temperature pretreatment required in experiments to activate WO x /SiO 2 catalysts.

Highly dispersed Pt atoms and clusters on hydroxylated indium tin oxide: a view from first-principles calculations

Supported single-atom and small cluster catalysts have become highly popular in heterogeneous catalysis. These catalysts can maximize the metal atom utilization while still showing superior catalytic performance. One of the main challenges in producing these small cluster catalysts is their low binding strength with the support, which causes these small clusters to sinter into larger nanoparticles. We have used first-principles simulations to study small Pt n ( n : 1,2,3) clusters on indium oxide, tin doped indium oxide, and hydroxylated tin doped indium oxide. We report that the Pt n cluster is stabilized in the presence of tin and that this is especially the case for Pt single atoms on the hydroxylated indium tin oxide support, which are anchored to the support via the hydroxyl group. On this support, the Pt single atoms become more stable than Pt 2 and Pt 3 clusters, hence decreasing sintering. These findings provide a promising way to design single-atom catalysts on electrically conducting supports for electrocatalytic applications and to better understand how functional groups on supports can increase the adhesion of cluster catalysts.
