Fabrication and evaluation of large-area ultrasoft X-ray detectors suitable for spacecraft application

The modifications to the Houston/MSC design of the gas proportional counter flight electronics system are discussed. The following modifications are described: charge amplifier bandwidth improvements, power converter redesign, serial data output buffer, second differentiator, and risetime discriminator. In addition, the redesign of the stellar aspect camera is discussed along with developments in thin film fabrication.

Design studies of lift fan engines suitable for use in civilian VTOL aircraft

Low pressure ratio fan engines are receiving increasing attention as a means to provide low speed lift for civilian VTOL transports. Two general types of fan lift engines that are being studied are integral fans and remote power fans. Preliminary engine design studies of both types of lift fan systems have been made. The paper summarizes a portion of the results of the engine design studies, including the crucial engine requirements, and some of the characteristics of the emerging engine designs of each type.

Constrained Chebyshev approximations to some elementary functions suitable for evaluation with floating point arithmetic

Approximations which can be evaluated with precision using floating-point arithmetic are presented. The particular set of approximations thus far developed are for the function TAN and the functions of USASI FORTRAN excepting SQRT and EXPONENTIATION. These approximations are, furthermore, specialized to particular forms which are especially suited to a computer with a small memory, in that all of the approximations can share one general purpose subroutine for the evaluation of a polynomial in the square of the working argument.

A capacitive accelerometer suitable for telemetry

The design and development of a miniature 0.635 cm (0.25 in.) diameter capacitive accelerometer for use in free flight wind tunnel telemetry are presented. Instruments with full scale ranges from + or - 1 to + or - 200 g were constructed, calibrated, and used in several wind tunnel telemetry projects. Flat, high frequency response from 0 to 1000 Hz or more was obtained by employing the inherent damping and stiffness in the air film surrounding the diaphragm-type spring that supports the inertial mass of the accelerometer. Design features to achieve minimum off-axis sensitivity and temperature stability are discussed, and the design requirements for use of the transducer with telemetry systems are derived. A transducer capacitance change of 0.16 pF full scale gave excellent resolution and provided a frequency deviation of 0.75 MHz for a 100 MHz FM oscillator. Although the present design of the capacitive accelerometer was optimized by using units of 0.635 cm diameter, construction of experimental accelerometers as small as 0.36 cm (0.14 in.) diameter has demonstrated the feasibility of further miniaturization.

Development of equilibrium air computer programs suitable for numerical computation using time-dependent or shock-capturing methods

Computer programs were developed which compute the thermodynamic properties of equilibrium air for use in either the time-dependent or shock-capturing computational methods. For the time-dependent method, tne NASA-ARC RGAS computer program was modified to allow internal energy and density to be used as the independent variables. In addition, simplified-curve fits for p = p(e,rho), a = a(e,rho), and T = T(p,rho) were devised to reduce computer time. For the shock-capturing method a simplified curve fit for h = h(p,rho) was made. These approximate curve fits may be particularly useful when employed on advanced computers such as the Illiac 4 or the CDC Star since they avoid the cumbersome table-lookup feature of the RGAS program.

Design studies of lift fan engines suitable for use in civilian VTOL aircraft.

Preliminary engine design studies have been made of two general types of low-pressure-ratio lift fan engines that are receiving increasing attention as a means to provide low-speed lift for large civilian VTOL transports. The two engine types are integral fans and remote powered fans. A portion of the results of these design studies is summarized, including the crucial engine requirements, and some of the characteristics of the emerging engine designs of each type.
