Ultraviolet solar spectrum /1889-1969 angstroms/

Six spectrograms of the solar spectrum were obtained in the region from 1800 to 1970 A at a resolving power of about 200,000, using a rocket-borne spectrograph with an echelle as the principal dispersing element. Data reduction has been completed for the region from 1889 to 1969 A, in which 732 features have been measured and tabulated along with available laboratory wavelengths which correspond reasonably with the solar features. Tracings of the spectra are also presented.-

Observations of angular distributions of low energy electron intensities over the auroral zones with Ariel 4

The electron intensities considered are within the energy range from 244 eV to 10.8 keV. The measurements were made at an altitude of about 570 km over the local-evening sector of the auroral zone. Aspects of instrumentation are discussed along with details regarding the observations, energy-time spectrograms, the signature of the plasma sheet, and inverted V events. The initial results reported provide new information concerning auroral acceleration mechanisms.

Effects of convection electric field on the distribution of ring current type protons

The topology of the boundaries of penetration (or, inversely, the boundaries of the forbidden regions) of 90-deg pitch-angle equatorial protons with energies less than 100 keV are explored for an equatorial convection E-field which is directed in general from dawn to dusk. Due to the dependence of drift path on energy (or magnetic moment), complex structural features are expected in the proton energy spectra detected by satellites since the penetration distance of a proton is not a monotonically increasing or decreasing function of energy. During a storm when the convection E is enhanced, model calculations predict elongations of the forbidden regions analogous to tail extensions of the plasmasphere. Following a reduction in the convection field, spiral-structured forbidden regions can occur. Structural features inherent to large-scale convection field changes may be seen in the nose-like proton spectrograms observed near dusk by instrumentation on Explorer 45. These nose events are modelled by using an electric field model developed originally by Volland (1973). The strength of the field is related to the Kp index through night-time equatorial plasmapause measurements.

A study of interstellar lines in the rocket spectrum of delta Scorpii

Ten interstellar lines in the vacuum UV spectrum of delta Sco are analyzed which were recorded on rocket spectrograms. Two cloud components are resolved which have Doppler widths of 1.55 km/sec (larger cloud) and 2.16 km/sec (smaller cloud). Column densities are derived for C I, C II, N I, O I, Al II, Si II, and Fe II, and abundances relative to atomic hydrogen are determined from them. Silicon and iron are found to be slightly overabundant relative to the solar abundances, while the other elements are underabundant by factors ranging from 1.8 to 8.6. Mean cloud densities of 250 and 150 per cu cm (for the larger and smaller clouds, respectively) are determined, and the average ratios of electron density to hydrogen-atom density are derived using the column densities of C I and C II. It is shown that the iron abundance can be decreased to less than the solar abundance by doubling the velocity dispersion of the iron ions.

The ultraviolet spectrum of zeta Tauri

This report describes a study of the ultraviolet spectrum of the B-shell star, zeta Tauri. The observational material consists of high-dispersion spectrograms obtained from a rocket experiment launched in November 1972. The spectra cover the wavelength interval from 1100 to 2050 A with a resolution of about 0.1 A. The UV stellar lines indicate that the star has an effective temperature as high as 27,000 K, the stellar atmosphere appears to have serious abundance deficiencies in carbon and silicon, and the velocity field in the atmosphere is complicated but shows evidence for outward acceleration and differential rotation.

Spectroscopic observations of comet Kohoutek (1973f)

Coude spectrograms of comet Kohoutek obtained with the ESO 152-cm telescope in La Silla, Chile are discussed. Emission features of the C3, CH, and CO(+) molecules found in the blue region of the spectrum are considered along with measured emissions in the visual region of the spectrum. The observational and cometary data are given in tabular form.

Trajectory Traces of Charged Particles in the Magnetosphere

The characteristic enhancements of ring current particles with energies of about 1 to 100 keV, associated with magnetospheric substorms, were observed by Explorer 45 around the plasmapause in the afternoon to midnight region, and showed the characteristic structure called a 'nose' in the proton spectrograms. The motion of these particles in the equatorial magnetosphere, under a recently proposed convection electric field and a dipole magnetic field is described. Approximate equations of a bounce period, a second adiabatic invariant, and a bounce-average azimuthal velocity are given with inaccuracies less than about 0.001 for all pitch angles. The complete set of flow patterns of 90 deg pitch angle particles is also presented by means of stagnation lines through which radial drifts and/or azimuthal drifts change their directions. The particle tracings in the magnetosphere give a basic concept to explain the observed nose characteristics.

High dispersion spectroscopic observations of HD 153919 (3U 1700-37)

A spectrogram of HD 153919 taken in June 1975 at phase phi = 0.79 shows the following interesting features when compared to previously published line profiles: (1) increased central absorption or more extended blue wings for He II lambda 5411 A and lambda 4541 A; (2) a change in the P Cygni profile of H beta; (3) a change in the relative intensities of N III and C III in the emission complex lambda lambda 4630-4650 A; and (4) a previously unreported emission feature near lambda 5300 A. These observations indicate the presence of a variable stellar wind from the primary, changes in the emission measure of the line-forming region in the primary, and possible spectroscopic signatures of features in the extended expanding atmosphere of the primary or the wake of the secondary.

Ultraviolet solar identifications based on extended absorption series observed in the laboratory spectrum of Si I

The absorption spectrum of Si I in the wavelength region between 1500 and 1900 A has been photographed at high resolution. The silicon vapor was produced in a 122-cm-long King furnace at 1800 to 2300 C. Forty-two Rydberg series have been observed from the ground state terms 3p(2)3P and 1D to terms associated with the 3pns and 3pnd configurations. All of the series from these configurations with J less than 4 have been extended with the 3pnd 3D(3) levels reaching n = 56. Numerous perturbations have been observed. This laboratory work has provided the basis for extending the identification of silicon lines in the solar spectrum. Nearly all lines found in the laboratory spectrum are also found in rocket spectrograms of the solar chromosphere. More than 300 lines have been attributed to Si I. The excellent correlation between laboratory and solar Si I lines is illustrated.

Deuteron whistler and trans-equatorial propagation of the ion cyclotron whistler

The paper investigates two unusual types of ion cyclotron whistlers that were found in the low-latitude topside ionosphere by analyzing ISIS VLF electric-field data received at Kashima, Japan. One type is characterized by an asymptotic frequency equal to one half the local proton gyrofrequency; the asymptotic frequency of the other type corresponds to the minimum proton gyrofrequency along the geomagnetic field line passing through the satellite. The observations are compared with theoretical spectrograms of the ion cyclotron whistlers computed for appropriate model distributions of electrons and ions in the topside ionosphere. It is found that the whistlers with the asymptotic frequency of one half the local proton gyrofrequency are deuteron whistlers and that the other whistlers are due to the transequatorial propagation of proton or deuteron whistlers originating in the southern hemisphere.

Plasma injection at synchronous orbit and spatial and temporal auroral morphology

Analysis of ATS 5 particle spectrograms and simultaneous meridian-scanning photometer data obtained at the base of the ATS field line has revealed systematic relationships between temporal and spatial auroral morphology and particle-injection events. The details of these relationships depend on previous injection events, the local time of the observatory with respect to current-injection events, and the extent and magnitude of current injections. A persistent zone of weak aurora is related to steady plasma-sheet drizzle, and the equatorward edge of this aurora delineates field lines threading the inner edge of the plasma sheet. Auroras associated with injection events superimpose on this preexisting pattern, with the lowest latitude of new precipitation depending on local time. In general, plasma energization is not required between the equatorial plane and the ionosphere to account for observed auroral intensities. The data indicate occasional occurrence of enhanced loss-cone fluxes, suggesting low-altitude field-aligned acceleration. A summary figure shows how various characteristic auroral-precipitation regions are related to the shape, extent, and orientation of the substorm injection boundary and to the subsequent drift paths of injected plasma.

Spectral analysis of a high-velocity meteor

A spectrogram of a fast optical meteor was reduced and analyzed, and 60 features were identified in the spectrum. Air and ionized elements in this meteor radiate throughout the spectrum from 3000 A to 6800 A. A mass of 9 mg and an effective radiation temperature of approximately 5700 K were computed for the meteor. Weight ratios of Ca:Fe, and Mg:Fe, and Na:Fe were computed. A plasma particle velocity distribution for meteors was derived, and the average collision speed obtained from this distribution was compared with the relative collision speed of a Fe-N2 gas mixture at 5700 K.

Pc 3, 4 activity and interplanetary field orientation

Analysis of Pc 3, 4 micropulsation wave forms recorded at Calgary in September 1969 shows a tendency toward signal enhancement in cases where the interplanetary magnetic field is at a small angle to the sun-earth line. Scatter plots of hourly Pc 3, 4 amplitudes exhibit a definite trend toward large signals when this angle is less than 50 or 60 degrees, and a corresponding disappearance of significant amplitudes when the angle is greater than 60 degrees. There is, however, an appreciable variability in individual cases. Power density spectrograms improved the correlation of pulsation strength with low angle in some cases.

Io - Morphology of its sodium emission region

Results of experiments carried out to obtain two-dimensional images of the sodium emission region associated with Io are presented. Through multislit spectrograms and Perot-Fabry interferograms, the dependence of the Na-emission distribution on Jupiter's magnetic field is demonstrated. The time scale of the observed changes in the Na emission is shown to require electron fluxes in the Jovian magnetosphere one order of magnitude larger than those obtained by an extrapolation of the proton fluxes measured in situ from the Pioneer 10 spacecraft.

Spectroscopic studies of O-type stars. VIII - Radial velocities and the K-term

Radial velocities are measured on coude spectrograms of over 200 O-type stars in both hemispheres. The selection of effective wavelengths for the stellar lines to be measured is reviewed, and the measured velocities are compared with those available in a catalog of O stars. The Trumpler (1935) effect (a reported anomalous redshift in certain O stars) is inconclusively reinvestigated, atmospheric motions in Of stars are examined, and some kinematic properties of O stars are discussed statistically. It is found that 58% of all O stars and 41% of all the Of stars considered are certain or probable binaries. A K-term in the range from 1 to 2 km/s is derived for the O stars, but the Of stars are shown to have a highly significant negative K-term. It is suggested that the systematically negative peculiar velocities of the Of stars are due to outflow of material beginning at the photospheric level.

Radar detectability of asteroids - A survey of opportunities for 1977 through 1987

The study of asteroids by earth-based radar during the period 1977 to 1987 is discussed. Detection modeling, including backscattering laws, limits of detectability, and in particular, measurement of center frequency, center-to-limb bandwidth, and areal spectral density, is reviewed. The number of detectable objects and detectable events falling into various 5-decibel radar target loss slots is estimated; a total of 60 different asteroids should be observable on about 130 occasions by either the Goldstone or Arecibo radar systems during the decade considered. Furthermore, the detectability margins for many objects should be large enough to permit more refined analysis of the radar spectrograms. Data acquired during the ten-year period may be used to find the radius, average surface roughness, rotation rate, direction of polar axis, and estimates of the Doppler frequency offsets for many of the asteroids. Also, information about radar albedos and orbital parameters may be obtainable in a number of cases.

High-resolution rocket spectra of the 1920-A and 1720-A features in the spectrum of Zeta Tauri

High-resolution ultraviolet spectrograms of the B-shell star Zeta Tau reveal two features characteristic of B supergiants, one at 1720 A and the other at 1920 A. The presence of these features in the spectrum of this object shows that they are indicative of an extended atmosphere - either the tenuous atmosphere of a supergiant or the envelope surrounding a rapidly rotating main-sequence star - and are therefore not purely luminosity criteria. The high spectral resolution allows an identification of the contributors to these features. The dominant contributor to the 1920-A feature is Fe III, while the primary contributor to the 1720-A feature is Al II.

The spectrum of HM Sagittae: A planetary nebula excited by a Wolf-Rayet star

A total of image tube spectrograms of HM Sagittae were obtained. More than 70 emission lines, including several broad emission features, were identified. An analysis of the spectra indicates that HM Sagittae is a planetary nebula excited by a Wolf-Rayet star. The most conspicuous Wolf-Rayet feature is that attributed to a blend of C III at 4650 A and He II at 4686 A.
