A variational method for the sheath potential of hypersonic leading edges with space-charge limitations

Electron transpiration cooling for the leading edges (LE) of hypersonic aircraft utilizes thermionic emission; however, space-charge effects limit the electron emission rate, potentially diminishing the efficiency of this cooling mechanism. We develop a variational weak form of the Poisson equation that describes the sheath potential and then numerically solve it using the finite element method. This formulation has two main benefits: (1) the space-charge limit condition can be incorporated as a constraint and (2) it allows for the analysis of three-dimensional geometries with complex boundary conditions. We demonstrate that the current emitted from the surface of an LE is generally a small fraction of the Child–Langmuir limit due to space charge. We then propose several methods to enhance the emitted current from the surface and to boost the cooling effect of thermionic emission. These include increasing the plasma density, applying a negative surface potential, and using fringe fields under suitable geometric conditions. For a LaB6 emitting LE, the total emitted current is shown to be minimal and independent of the temperature of a surface with floating potential. However, when a negative potential is applied and the surface is heated, the emitted current follows the Richardson–Dushman relationship up to a critical temperature, beyond which it remains constant. At an applied surface potential of −5 V, the critical temperature is around 1700 K.

Data for “Tree root nutrient uptake kinetics vary with nutrient availability, environmental conditions, and root traits: A global analysis”

This data package contains data and code used in the paper “Tree root nutrient uptake kinetics vary with nutrient availability, environmental conditions, and root traits: A global analysis”. The central product is a global dataset of root inorganic nutrient uptake rates and kinetics parameters covering temperate, boreal, and sub/tropical tree species, representing a collection of nutrient uptake data from published studies. This dataset enables tree investigation of root nutrient uptake rates across species, space, and experimental conditions. The data can also be combined with supplementary data on root and soil traits or with external datasets (e.g. R scripts contained within use data from FRED 3.0; (Iversen et al., 2021)). Contained within is the main nutrient data “uptake_data.csv” as well as 4 additional .csv files that link uptake data to supplementary measurements, source references, taxonomic information, and additional nutrient uptake measurements across nutrient gradients, and 1 .csv file that records meta-analysis results for plotting with the R scripts. There are seven R scripts that support data analysis and creation of the figures in the related publication.

Multi-scenario Extreme Weather Simulator application to heat waves: Ko’olauloa community resilience hub

Heat waves are increasing in severity, duration, and frequency. The Multi-Scenario Extreme Weather Simulator (MEWS) models this using historical data, climate model outputs, and heat wave multipliers. In this study, MEWS is applied for planning of a community resilience hub in Hau'ula, Hawaii. The hub will have normal operations and resilience operations modes. Both these modes were modeled using EnergyPlus. The resilience operations mode includes cutting off air conditioning for many spaces to decrease power requirements during emergencies. Results were simulated for 300 future weather files generated by MEWS for 2020, 2040, 2060, and 2080. Shared socioeconomic pathways 2-4.5, 3-7.0 and 5-8.5 were used. The resilience operations mode results show two to six times increase of hours of exceedance beyond 32.2 °C from present conditions, depending on climate scenario and future year. The resulting decrease in thermal resilience enables an average decrease of energy use intensity of 26% with little sensitivity to climate change. The decreased thermal resilience predicted in the future is undesirable, but was not severe enough to require a more energy-intensive resilience mode. Instead, planning is needed to assure vulnerable individuals are given prioritized access to air-conditioned parts of the hub if worst-case heat waves occur.
