Signatures of a liquid-crystal transition in spin-wave excitations of skyrmions

Abstract Understanding the spin-wave excitations of chiral magnetic order, such as the skyrmion crystal (SkX), is of fundamental interest to confirm such exotic magnetic order. The SkX is realized by competing Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya and ferromagnetic-exchange interactions with a magnetic field or anisotropy. Here, we compute the dynamical spin structure factor, using Monte Carlo and spin dynamics simulations, extracting the spin-wave spectrum in the SkX, in the vicinity of the paramagnet to SkX transition. Inside the SkX, we find six spin-wave modes, which are supplemented by another mode originating from the ferromagnetic background. Above the critical temperature T s for the skyrmion crystallization, we find a diffusive regime, reminiscent of the liquid-to-crystal transition, revealing that topological spin texture of skyrmionic character starts to develop above T s as the precursor of the SkX. We discuss the opportunities for the detection of the spin waves of the SkX using inelastic-neutron-scattering experiments in manganite-iridate heterostructures.

Skyrmion control of Majorana states in planar Josephson junctions

Planar Josephson junctions provide a versatile platform, alternative to the nanowire-based geometry, for the generation of the Majorana bound states, due to the additional phase tunability of the topological superconductivity. The proximity induction of chiral magnetism and superconductivity in a two-dimensional electron gas showed remarkable promise to manipulate topological superconductivity. Here, we consider a Josephson junction involving a skyrmion crystal and show that the chiral magnetism of the skyrmions can create and control the Majorana bound states without the requirement of an intrinsic Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Interestingly, the Majorana bound states in our geometry are realized robustly at zero phase difference at the junction. The skyrmion radius, being externally tunable by a magnetic field or a magnetic anisotropy, brings a unique control feature for the Majorana bound states.

Commensurate states and pattern switching via liquid crystal skyrmions trapped in a square lattice

Using continuum based simulations we show that a rich variety of skyrmion liquid crystal states can be realized in the presence of a periodic obstacle array. As a function of the number of skyrmions per obstacle we find hexagonal, square, dimer, trimer and quadrimer ordering, where the n-mer structures are a realization of a molecular crystal state of skyrmions. As a function of external field and obstacle radius we show that there are transitions between the different crystalline states as well as mixed and disordered structures. Here, we discuss how these states are related to commensurate effects seen in other systems, such as vortices in type-II superconductors and colloids interacting with two dimensional substrates.

Sliding dynamics of skyrmion molecular crystals

Using both atomistic and particle-based simulations, we investigate the current-driven dynamics of skyrmions on two-dimensional periodic substrates when there are multiple skyrmions per substrate minimum. At zero drive, the system forms pinned skyrmion molecular crystal states consisting of dimers, trimers, or dimer-trimer mixtures that have both positional and orientational order. On a square substrate lattice, the motion above depinning occurs via a running soliton that travels completely transverse to the applied current. This motion is generated by a torque from the Magnus force, which rotates the n-mer states perpendicular to the applied current. At higher drives, the flow becomes disordered while the Hall angle diminishes and gradually approaches the intrinsic value. In some cases, we also find directional locking where the Hall angle becomes locked to certain symmetry directions of the substrate over a range of currents. The transitions into and out of directionally locked states are accompanied by negative differential mobility in which the net velocity decreases as the drive increases. In conclusion, on a triangular substrate, we find no transverse mobility effects, but still observe directionally locked motion.

Electron transport through antiferromagnetic spin textures and skyrmions in a magnetic tunnel junction

An ideal layered $\hat{x}$-polarized antiferromagnet (AFM) between two antialigned $±\hat{z}$ polarized ferromagnetic (FM) contacts transmits no current due to a π phase difference of the matrix elements coupling the spin degenerate states to the two FM contacts. Inserting a normal-metal layer or tunnel barrier layer between one FM contact and the AFM alters this phase difference, and due to the unequal weighting of the two spins at the interface, it also breaks the spin degeneracy of the two AFM states. Further, the broken symmetry of the matrix elements combined with the broken degeneracy of the AFM states results in a Fano resonance in the transmission and a turn-on of the $T_{↑,↓}$ transmission channel. Such a magnetic tunnel junction geometry with two antialigned $±\hat{z}$ FM contacts can electrically detect an AFM skyrmion. The AFM skyrmion serves as an analog of the oblique polarizer in the triple-polarizer experiment. Resistances and resistance ratios are calculated and compared for FM and AFM skyrmions in a magnetic tunnel junction.

Skyrmions and hopfions in three-dimensional frustrated magnets

Here, a model of an inversion-symmetric frustrated spin system is introduced which hosts three-dimensional extensions of magnetic skyrmions. In the continuum approximation, this model reduces to a nonlinear sigma model on a squashed sphere that has a natural interpolating parameter. At one limit of the parameter, the model reduces to a frustrated magnetic system earlier considered by Sutcliffe as a host to hopfions, and in the other limit, it becomes very similar to the 3D Skyrme model. To better understand the relation between hopfions and 3D skyrmions, a model interpolating between the Faddeev-Niemi and the Skyrme models is reconsidered and it is shown that energies of the solitons obey a linear Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfeld bound. The 3D skyrmions in the frustrated magnetic model are found and compared to the rational map ansatz.

Topological magnon band structure of emergent Landau levels in a skyrmion lattice

We report the motion of a spin excitation across topologically nontrivial magnetic order exhibits a deflection that is analogous to the effect of the Lorentz force on an electrically charged particle in an orbital magnetic field. We used polarized inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the propagation of magnons (i.e., bosonic collective spin excitations) in a lattice of skyrmion tubes in manganese silicide. For wave vectors perpendicular to the skyrmion tubes, the magnon spectra are consistent with the formation of finely spaced emergent Landau levels that are characteristic of the fictitious magnetic field used to account for the nontrivial topological winding of the skyrmion lattice. This provides evidence of a topological magnon band structure in reciprocal space, which is borne out of the nontrivial real-space topology of a magnetic order.

Pseudogap and Fermi arc induced by Fermi surface nesting in a centrosymmetric skyrmion magnet

Skyrmions in noncentrosymmetric materials are believed to occur due to the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. By contrast, the skyrmion formation mechanism in centrosymmetric materials remains elusive. Here, in this work, we reveal the intrinsic electronic structure of the centrosymmetric GdRu 2 Si 2 by selectively measuring magnetic domains using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We found robust Fermi surface (FS) nesting, consistent with the magnetic modulation q -vector detected by the previous resonant x-ray scattering measurements. The pseudogap opens at the nested FS portions, which vary for different magnetic domains. The anomalous pseudogap disconnects the FS to generate Fermi arcs with twofold symmetry. These results indicate that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction plays a decisive role in generating the screw spin modulation responsible for the skyrmion formation in GdRu 2 Si 2 . Furthermore, we demonstrate the flexible nature of magnetism in GdRu 2 Si 2 by manipulating magnetic domains with magnetic field and temperature cyclings, providing potential future applications for data storage and processing devices.

Skyrmion crystals in the triangular Kondo lattice model

We present a systematic study of the formation of skyrmion crystals in a triangular Kondo Lattice model for generic electron filling fractions. Our results indicate that the four-sublattice chiral antiferromagnetic ordering that was reported more than one decade ago can be understood as the dense limit of a sequence of skyrmion crystals whose lattice parameter is dictated by the Fermi wave-vector. This observation has important implications for the ongoing search of skyrmion crystals in metallic materials with localized magnetic moments.

Imprinting a Three-Dimensional Skyrmion in a Bose–Einstein Condensate Via a Raman Process

We describe an experimental protocol for the creation of a three-dimensional topological defect, a skyrmion, in a pseudo-spin-1/2 Bose–Einstein condensate (BEC) confined in a spin-independent harmonic trap. We show that one can imprint the skyrmion on the BEC within a few tens of microseconds using a Raman process with the structured laser fields. We numerically solved the mean-field Gross– Pitaevskii equation to examine our imprinting scheme and found that all parameters we use are experimentally feasible.

Melting and freezing of a skyrmion lattice

We report comprehensive Monte–Carlo studies of the melting of skyrmion lattices (SkL) in systems of small, medium, and large sizes with the number of skyrmions ranging from 10 3 to over 10 5 . Large systems exhibit hysteresis similar to that observed in real experiments on the melting of SkLs. For sufficiently small systems which achieve thermal equilibrium, a fully reversible sharp solid–liquid transition on temperature with no intermediate hexatic phase is observed. A similar behavior is found on changing the magnetic field that provides the control of pressure in the SkL. Here, we find that on heating the melting transition occurs via a formation of grains with different orientations of hexagonal axes. On cooling, the fluctuating grains coalesce into larger clusters until a uniform orientation of hexagonal axes is slowly established. The observed scenario is caused by collective effects involving defects and is more complex than a simple picture of a transition driven by the unbinding and annihilation of dislocation and disclination pairs.

Entropic signatures of the skyrmion lattice phase in MnSi 1- x Al x and Fe 1- y Co y Si

Here, the entropic signatures of magnetic phase transitions in the skyrmion lattice host compounds MnSi 0.962 Al 0.038 and Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 Si were investigated through low field magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements. These data indicate that the conical to skyrmion transition that occurs with the application of magnetic field in MnSi 0.962 Al 0.038 is characterized by clear discontinuity in the magnetic entropy as expected for first order topological phase transition. These same magnetoentropic features are negligibly small in isostructural Fe 0.7 Co 0.3 Si due to the level of chemical substitution related disorder and differences in the spin dynamics (range and timescales). Despite the obvious similarities in the magnetic structures of these two compounds, the transitions between these phases is substantially different indicating a surprising nonuniversality to the magnetic phase transitions in this class of materials.

Fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo study of activation gap and skyrmion excitations of a ν = 1 system in the presence of charged impurities

The discrepancy between the theoretically calculated and experimentally measured activation gaps in quantum Hall effect has long been a puzzle. We revisit this issue in the context of the v = 1 quantum Hall state, while also incorporating the skyrmion physics. We find that the finite width and the Landau level mixing effects are not sufficient to explain the observed activation gap. We further show that the presence of charged impurities located adjacent to the quantum well can cause a significant reduction in the activation gap, while also causing a suppression of the skyrmion size.

Heterobilayer moiré magnets: Moiré skyrmions and commensurate-incommensurate transitions

In this work, we study untwisted heterobilayers of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic van der Waals materials, with in particular a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the ferromagnetic layer. A continuum low-energy field theory is utilized to study such systems. We develop a phase diagram as a function of the strength of interlayer exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, combining perturbative and strong coupling analyses with numerical simulations using Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. Various moiré-periodic commensurate phases are found, and the commensurate-incommensurate transition is discussed. Among the commensurate phases, we observe an interesting skyrmion lattice phase wherein each moiré unit-cell hosts one skyrmion.

Skyrmion lattice manipulation with electric currents and thermal gradients in MnSi

The skyrmion lattice (SkL) in MnSi was studied using small-angle neutron scattering and under the influence of a radial electric current in a Corbino geometry. In response to the applied current, the SkL undergoes an angular reorientation with respect to the MnSi crystal lattice. The reorientation is nonmonotonic with increasing current, with the SkL rotating first in one direction and then the other. The SkL reorientation was studied at different sample locations and found to depend on the local current density as inferred from a finite-element analysis. Here, the nonmonotonic response indicates the presence of two competing effects on the SkL, most likely due to the presence of both radial electric and thermal currents. Such a scenario is supported by micromagnetic simulations, which show how these effects can act constructively or destructively to drive the SkL rotation, depending on the direction of the electric current. In addition, the simulations also suggest how the direction of the skyrmion flow may affect the SkL orientation.

Fermi Surface Nesting Driving the RKKY Interaction in the Centrosymmetric Skyrmion Magnet Gd 2 PdSi 3

The magnetic skyrmions generated in a centrosymmetric crystal were recently first discovered in Gd 2 PdSi 3 . In light of this, we observe the electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and unveil its direct relationship with the magnetism in this compound. The Fermi surface and band dispersions are demonstrated to have a good agreement with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations carried out with careful consideration of the crystal superstructure. Most importantly, we find that the three-dimensional Fermi surface has extended nesting which matches well the q vector of the magnetic order detected by recent scattering measurements. Finally, the consistency we find among ARPES, DFT, and the scattering measurements suggests the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction involving itinerant electrons to be the formation mechanism of skyrmions in Gd 2 PdSi 3 .

Multipolar Skyrmion Crystals in Non-Kramers Doublet Systems

Here, we study the Kondo lattice model of multipolar magnetic moments interacting with conduction electrons on a triangular lattice. Bond-dependent electron hoppings induce a compasslike anisotropy in the effective Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction between multipolar moments. This unique anisotropy stabilizes multipolar skyrmion crystals at zero magnetic field. In a unit cell, the skyrmion fractionalizes into meron composites subject to the conservation of total topological charge. Diverse multipolar phases in the phase diagram give rise to novel spontaneous Hall response of conduction electrons.
