A Congeries of Absorption Cross Sections for Wavelengths Less Than 3000 degrees Angstrom

The absorption of ultraviolet solar radiation is of prime importance for the study of planetary atmospheres. The absorption coefficients of most of the atmospheric gases have been measured by a number of investigators, but the results are scattered throughout the literature. This report contains a detailed collection of absorption cross sections of the gases listed in Table 1 for wavelengths less than 3000 degrees angstroms. The data on each gas are given together with a historical sketch of the study of the gas and a list of the pertinent references. Also included is a study of the absorption and photoionization coefficients of the major atmospheric gases at intense solar emission lines.

II. Aerodynamic research relative to variable-sweep multimission aircraft

The development of a multimission military aircraft would be highly desirable both from the standpoint of easing the strain on the national budget by reducing the number of aircraft types and of providing versatility which would increase the effectiveness of the aircraft in the performance of a given mission. Some of the capabilities which might be required of such an aircraft are shown in figure 1 along with their respective aerodynamic and configuration requirements. The first three capabilities are grouped together since they all require good subsonic characteristics. The first, a long loiter capability for combat air patrol and the second, a long ferry range for efficient aircraft deployment both require a high subsonic lift-drag ratio. The third capability, STOL, is desirable for carrier and short-field operation and requires the development of high lift. All three of these capabilities can best be obtained with a high-aspect-ratio wing having a large span and a low-sweep angle. The fourth capability is that of a high-altitude supersonic attack or intercept and requires a high lift-drag ratio at supersonic speeds which dictates a rather slender configuration with a moderate-span wing which is either very thin or highly swept. The fifth capability listed in figure 1 is that of a low-altitude high-speed attack that would increase the probability of long-range penetration of antiaircraft defenses. The high dynamic pressures encountered on the deck at high speeds require a low-lift-curve slope to reduce the gust-induced normal accelerations, and low friction and wave drag (drag due to lift is insignificant at high dynamic pressures) to assure sufficient speed and range. In order to best satisfy these requirements, a slender aircraft having little or no wing is required. It is apparent from figure 1 that these five capabilities are highly incompatible and that an efficient multimission aircraft will require a means of varying its aerodynamic characteristics. This can be best accomplished with some type of variable-wing geometry. There are, of course, several types of variable wing geometry. However, in view of the extremely large variations in wing span desired, variable wing sweep, as indicated In the lower right sketch of figure 1, appears to provide the best method. The Langley Research Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has therefore initiated a research program to provide the aerodynamic information needed for the development of a variable-sweep multimission military aircraft, and it is the purpose of this paper to briefly describe some of the results of this program.

Space station buildup simulation

Simulations of selected earth orbital operations involving the shuttle orbiter and various modular space station components are examined. Data on the physical characteristics of these items, such as size, shape, and configuration, as well as the current operational concepts were obtained from NASA, MSC and from drawings and sketches. From these data numerical models were developed for the space shuttle orbiter and components of a six-man initial station including a core module, power module with solar arrays, representative station modules, and various sensors and antenna. Also included are maintenance inspection and failure reports, discussions with operating and service personnel, and a detailed examination of the equipment. No incipient long term reliability problems were found.

Feasibility study for locating archaeological village sites by satellite remote sensing techniques

The author has identified the following significant results. As a result of ground truth activities, the accurate geographic location of an old fish camp was established as 64 deg 12 min 38 sec N, 158 deg 30 min 42 sec W. Previously the location of this very large abandoned village site was given only on a map sketched in 1935. This location and two other nearby sites will be used as ERTS training areas.

Corkscrews and singularities in fruitflies - Resetting behavior of the circadian eclosion rhythm.

Description of experiments undertaken to define the phase-resetting behavior of the circadian rhythm of pupal eclosion in populations of fruitflies. An attempt is made to determine how and why the resetting response depends on the duration of a standard perturbation as well as on the time at which it is given. Plotting a three-dimensional graph of the measured emergence centroids vs the stimulus variables, the data are found to spiral up around a vertical rotation axis. Using a computer, a smooth surface, called the resetting surface, which approximately fits the helicoidal cloud of data points, is obtained and is shown to be best described as a vertical corkscrew linking together tilted planes. This corkscrew feature of the resetting surface is taken to indicate that there is an isolated perturbation following which there is either no circadian rhythm of emergence in the steady state, or one of unpredictable phase. A hypothesis concerning the clock dynamics underlying the eclosion rhythm is briefly sketched which encompasses the main features of known resetting data using single discrete pulses of any perturbing agent.

Error correction in adders using systematic subcodes.

A generalized theory is presented for the construction of a systematic subcode for a given AN code in such a way that error control properties of the AN code are preserved in this new code. The 'systematic weight' and 'systematic distance' functions in this new code depend not only on its number representation system but also on its addition structure. Finally, to illustrate this theory, a simple error-correcting adder organization using a systematic subcode of 29 N code is sketched in some detail.

Sampling functions for geophysics

A set of spherical sampling functions is defined such that they are related to spherical-harmonic functions in the same way that the sampling functions of information theory are related to sine and cosine functions. An orderly distribution of (N + 1) squared sampling points on a sphere is given, for which the (N + 1) squared spherical sampling functions span the same linear manifold as do the spherical-harmonic functions through degree N. The transformations between the spherical sampling functions and the spherical-harmonic functions are given by recurrence relations. The spherical sampling functions of two arguments are extended to three arguments and to nonspherical reference surfaces. Typical applications of this formalism to geophysical topics are sketched.

Preliminary Mariner 9 report on the geology of Mars.

Mariner 9 results indicate that Mars is geologically far more heterogeneous than previously suspected from earlier flyby missions; the surface has been shaped by volcanic, tectonic, erosional, and depositional activity. The equatorial region between 30 deg N and 30 deg S latitude is depicted in four geologic sketch maps, and seventeen geologic units are defined on the basis of their textural characteristics. The maps and the brief descriptions of geological units portrayed are followed by a series of more interpretive discussions dealing with topical problems and a summary geologic history. Topics covered include cratering, circular basins, volcanism, canyons, chaotic terrain, channels, and eolian activity.
