Land utilization and water resource inventories over extended test sites

In addition to the work on the corn blight this year, several other analysis tests were completed which resulted in significant findings. These aspects are discussed as follows: (1) field spectral measurements of soil conditions; (2) analysis of extended test site data; this discussion involves three different sets of data analysis sequences; (3) urban land use analysis, for studying water runoff potentials; and (4) thermal data quality study, as an expansion of our water resources studies involving temperature calibration techniques.

Project Viking.

NASA will launch two spacecraft to Mars in 1975 to soft-land on the surface and test for signs of life. After confirming the site data from orbit, each of the spacecraft will separate into two parts, an orbiter and a lander. Together they will conduct scientific studies of the Martian atmosphere and surface. The lander's instruments will collect data for transmission to earth, direct or via the orbiter, including panoramic, stereo color pictures of its immediate surroundings, molecular organic and inorganic analyses of the soil, and atmospheric, meteorological, magnetic, and seismic characteristics. It will also make measurements of the atmosphere as it descends to the surface.

Development and field testing of a Light Aircraft Oil Surveillance System (LAOSS)

An experimental device consisting of a conventional TV camera with a low light level photo image tube and motor driven polarized filter arrangement was constructed to provide a remote means of discriminating the presence of oil on water surfaces. This polarized light filtering system permitted a series of successive, rapid changes between the vertical and horizontal components of reflected polarized skylight and caused the oil based substances to be more easily observed and identified as a flashing image against a relatively static water surface background. This instrument was flight tested, and the results, with targets of opportunity and more systematic test site data, indicate the potential usefulness of this airborne remote sensing instrument.

The application of remote sensing technology to the solution of problems in the management of resources in Indiana

The author has identified the following significant results. The Lydich quadrangle area was successfully classified into seven cover types: (1) trees, (2) poorly drained soil and water, (3) pasture land, (4) well drained brown soil, (5) moderately well drained dark brown soil, (6) moderately drained soil, and (7) medium to poorly drained soil. Measurements of the percent of mapping unit represented by a named soil series range from 44 to 55 percent. If the class identified as vegetation is combined with the named unit, the range increases from 54 to 64 percent. The Xenia mapping unit was the only unit represented by less than 50 percent of the named unit. Results from the intensive tent moth study in Owensburg and Williams were interpreted from 70 mm color infrared and visually transferred to maps. A correction factor was necessary, because the date the sample photography was taken was a month later than the intensive site data (CF x acres defoliated in each level = expanded defoliated acres).

Prototype solar domestic hot water systems

Construction of a double wall heat exchanger using soft copper tube coiled around a hot water storage tank was completed and preliminary tests were conducted. Solar transport water to tank potable water heat exchange tests were performed with a specially constructed test stand. Work was done to improve the component hardware and system design for the solar water heater. The installation of both a direct feed system and a double wall heat exchanger system provided experience and site data to enable informative decisions to be made as the solar market expands into areas where freeze protection is required.
