Thermodynamic Profiling Through ASSIST Observations and TROPoe Retrievals

This report reviews the most relevant theoretical aspects of thermodynamic profiling techniques based on spectral observations from ASSIST-II infrared radiometers and TROPoe retrievals. The ASSIST+TROPoe system is a cutting-edge remote sensing technology deployed during the AWAKEN and WFIP3 field campaigns to estimate high-frequency profiles of temperature and humidity in the atmosphere. These profiles are highly valuable for characterizing atmospheric stratification, improving wind models, and understanding the impacts of wind plants on the climate. In this document, we discuss the operating principles of ASSIST, the physics of atmospheric infrared radiation, and the mathematical framework and capabilities of TROPoe. Sources of uncertainties in both the instrument and the retrieval method are also thoroughly addressed. This guide is designed to help users of ASSIST, TROPoe, and thermodynamic data in collecting, estimating, and applying thermodynamic profiles rigorously and scientifically.

Constraining microphysical processes of warm rain formulation using advanced spectral separations, an ensemble retrieval framework and machine learning techniques

Drizzle, a common feature of marine boundary layer clouds formed through collision coalescence, plays a key role in cloud microphysics and evolution. Yet, simultaneously retrieving cloud and drizzle properties from remote-sensing observations remains challenging because drizzle droplets often dominate radar signals, masking cloud contributions. The goal of the proposed research is to provide constraints for the process of autoconversion and accretion using ARM cloud measurements. Specifically, we provide concurrent retrievals of cloud and drizzle that allows users to derive corresponding autoconversion and accretion rates.

Geostationary Satellite Retrievals with Irradiances and Cloud Properties / Processed Data

The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) records sky brightness temperatures and irradiances at several wavelengths. From these the cloud microphysical and optical properties can be routinely retrieved. These properties are derived using the technique proposed by Minnis et al. 2020, and is similar to the technique used for deriving cloud properties from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. The derived GOES properties for the duration of the second Wind Forecasting Improvement Project (WFIP2) within the domain are reported here. Nominally the retrieved dataset has a 30- minute temporal and a 9 km spatial resolution.

An Algorithm to Retrieve Total Precipitable Water Vapor in the Atmosphere from FengYun 3D Medium Resolution Spectral Imager 2 (FY-3D MERSI-2) Data

The atmosphere has substantial effects on optical remote sensing imagery of the Earth’s surface from space. These effects come through the functioning of atmospheric particles on the radiometric transfer from the Earth’s surface through the atmosphere to the sensor in space. Precipitable water vapor (PWV), CO 2 , ozone, and aerosol in the atmosphere are very important among the particles through their functioning. This study presented an algorithm to retrieve total PWV from the Chinese second-generation polar-orbiting meteorological satellite FengYun 3D Medium Resolution Spectral Imager 2 (FY-3D MERSI-2) data, which have three near-infrared (NIR) water vapor absorbing channels, i.e., channel 16, 17, and 18. The algorithm was improved from the radiance ratio technique initially developed for Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data. MODTRAN 5 was used to simulate the process of radiant transfer from the ground surfaces to the sensor at various atmospheric conditions for estimation of the coefficients of ratio technique, which was achieved through statistical regression analysis between the simulated radiance and transmittance values for FY-3D MERSI-2 NIR channels. The algorithm was then constructed as a linear combination of the three-water vapor absorbing channels of FY-3D MERSI-2. Measurements from two ground-based reference datasets were used to validate the algorithm: the sun photometer measurements of Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) and the microwave radiometer measurements of Energy’s Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Program (ARMP). The validation results showed that the algorithm performs very well when compared with the ground-based reference datasets. The estimated PWV values come with root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.28 g/cm 2 for the ARMP and 0.26 g/cm 2 for the AERONET datasets, with bias of 0.072 g/cm 2 and 0.096 g/cm 2 for the two reference datasets, respectively. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm revealed a better consistency with ground-based reference datasets. Thus, the proposed algorithm could be used as an alternative to retrieve PWV from FY-3D MERSI-2 data for various remote sensing applications such as agricultural monitoring, climate change, hydrologic cycle, and so on at various regional and global scales.

The development of rainfall retrievals from radar at Darwin

Abstract. The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement program Tropical Western Pacific site hosted a C-band polarization (CPOL) radar in Darwin, Australia. It provides 2 decades of tropical rainfall characteristics useful for validating global circulation models. Rainfall retrievals from radar assume characteristics about the droplet size distribution (DSD) that vary significantly. To minimize the uncertainty associated with DSD variability, new radar rainfall techniques use dual polarization and specific attenuation estimates. This study challenges the applicability of several specific attenuation and dual-polarization-based rainfall estimators in tropical settings using a 4-year archive of Darwin disdrometer datasets in conjunction with CPOL observations. This assessment is based on three metrics: statistical uncertainty estimates, principal component analysis (PCA), and comparisons of various retrievals from CPOL data. The PCA shows that the variability in R can be consistently attributed to reflectivity, but dependence on dual-polarization quantities was wavelength dependent for 1 10mmh-1. Rainfall estimates during these conditions primarily originate from deep convective clouds with median drop diameters greater than 1.5 mm. An uncertainty analysis and intercomparison with CPOL show that a Colorado State University blended technique for tropical oceans, with modified estimators developed from video disdrometer observations, is most appropriate for use in all cases, such as when 1 10mmh-1 (deeper convective rain).

Influences of lidar scanning parameters on wind turbine wake retrievals in complex terrain

Abstract. Scanning lidars enable the collection of spatially distributed measurements of turbine wakes and the estimation of wake properties such as magnitude, extent, and trajectory. Lidar-based characterizations, however, may be subject to distortions due to the observational system. Distortions can arise from the resolution of the measurement points across the wake, the projection of the winds onto the beam, averaging along the beam probe volume, and intervening evolution of the flow over the scan duration. Using a large-eddy simulation and simulated measurements with a virtual lidar model, we assess how scanning lidar systems may influence the properties of the retrieved wake using a case study from the Perdigão campaign. We consider three lidars performing range-height indicator sweeps in complex terrain, based on the deployments of lidars from the Danish Technical University (DTU) and German Aerospace Center (DLR) at the Perdigão site. The unwaked flow, measured by the DTU lidar, is well-captured by the lidar, even without combining data into a multi-lidar retrieval. The two DLR lidars measure a waked transect from different downwind vantage points. In the region of the wake, the observation system reacts to the smaller spatial and temporal variations of the winds, allowing more significant observation distortions to arise. While the measurements largely capture the wake structure and trajectory over its 4–5 D extent, limited spatial resolution of measurement points and volume averaging lead to a quicker loss of the two lobes in the near wake, smearing of the vertical bounds of the wake (< 30 m), wake center displacements up to 10 m, and dampening of the maximum velocity deficit by up to a third. The virtual lidar tool, coupled with simulations, provides a means for assessing measurement capabilities in advance of measurement campaigns.

Radar-based Snow Property Profile Retrievals for NSA

The product contains estimated snow microphysical properties retrieved primarily from vertically-profiling radar observations using a priori constraints that are dependent on atmospheric state. The product provides data at 1-minute time resolution, including snowfall rate at the surface and vertical profiles at 300-meter resolution of snow particle size distribution parameters and snow water contents. Estimated uncertainties for the snowfall rates and snow water contents are also provided. The product is obtained using an optimal estimation retrieval in which radar forward model and a priori state characteristics are based on expected snow particle microphysical and radar scattering properties evaluated from field experiment data.

TRACER CLAMPS1 AERI TROPoe Retrievals

These files contain 24 hour periods of retrieved thermodynamic profiles derived from observations collected by the CLAMPS1 Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI). The TROPoe algorithm is a python equivalent to the AERIoe algorithm (see Turner and Loehnert 2014; Turner and Blumberg 2019). These data were collected during the TRACER-CUBIC project. Due to issues with the CLAMPS1 microwave radiometer, only retrievals that used AERI data are available.

DMTN-165: A Hybrid Notification and Alert Retrieval Service

We consider the implications of providing a subset of alert packet contents in the alert stream, with the full alert packets available for rate-limited retrieval using an identifier included in the "lightweight" alert. This hybrid approach would enable much wider dissemination of the complete lightweight alert stream, potentially to thousands more users than is possible in the current baseline. In turn this "alerts on your laptop" access would allow users to conduct more sophisticated filtering and analysis than the current Alert Filtering Service, increasing the overall scientific returns of the alert stream. Community brokers would still be able to retrieve all of the contents of the full alert stream within the 60 second latency window and would gain greater control over their ingestion of the bulk alert data. Technically, this hybrid system may represent a modest increase in complexity over the current baseline but is likely to be more operationally robust.

Study of Waste Generated by Retrieval of Fuel Debris at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station - 20178

As a member of International Research Institute for Nuclear Decommissioning (IRID), we organized information on waste generated from the fuel debris retrieval, and considered containment, transport and storage processes. An important safety function to consider for these wastes is not only the handling of ordinary high-dose waste, but also the prevention of diffusion of fuel component contamination and the countermeasures against hydrogen gas generation. In order to satisfy these safety functions, we considered guideline for waste generated from the fuel debris retrieval, and proposed an example of handling process that includes generation of waste, container storage, on-site transfer and storage in a storage building. Large Language Model Integration for Knowledge Retrieval and Interaction for the DUNE Experiment

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment (DUNE) is a next-generation neutrino experiment that will generate an unprecedented volume of heterogeneous information-from documentation and technical notes to experimental data and reconstruction pipelines. Efficient knowledge retrieval and contextual understanding are increasingly critical for collaboration-wide productivity and onboarding. In this work, we present DUNE-GPT, a prototype framework that leverages large language models (LLMs) and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) to enable natural-language querying of DUNE's internal documentation and technical resources. The system provides an intelligent interface for DUNE collaborators to interact with experiment-specific knowledge while maintaining data privacy and infrastructure compliance within Fermilab computing resources.

FATHOMS-RAG: A Framework for the Assessment of Thinking and Observation in Multimodal Systems that use Retrieval Augmented Generation

Retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) has emerged as a promising paradigm for improving factual accuracy in large language models (LLMs). We introduce a benchmark designed to evaluate RAG pipelines as a whole, evaluating a pipelines ability to ingest several modalities of information. We present (1) a curated dataset of 93 questions designed to evaluate a pipeline's ability to ingest textual data, tables, images, multimodal data, and cross-document multimodal data; (2) a phrase-level recall metric for correctness; (3) a nearest-neighbor embedding classifier in an attempt to classify pipeline hallucinations; (4) a comparative evaluation of 2 pipelines built with open-source retrieval mechanisms and 4 closed-source foundational models; and (5) a third-party human evaluation of the alignment of our correctness and hallucination metrics. We find that closed-source pipelines significantly outperform open-source pipelines in both the correctness and halucination metrics, with a wider performance gap in questions relying on multimodal and cross-document information. We also find after a human evaluation of our correctness and hallucination metric compared with our questions and pipeline responses, average agreement was 4.62 for correctness 4.53 for hallucination detection on a 1-5 Likert scale with 5 being strongly agree with our determination.

Ptychographic phase retrieval by proximal algorithms

We derive a set of ptychography phase-retrieval iterative engines based on proximal algorithms originally developed in convex optimization theory, and discuss their connections with existing ones. The use of proximal operator creates a simple frame work that allows us to incorporate the effect of noise from a maximum-likelihood (ML) principle. We focus on three particular algorithms, namely proximal minimization, alternating direction method of multiplier and accelerated proximal gradient (APG). We benchmark their performance with numerical simulations, and discuss their optimal conditions for convergence and accuracy. An experimental dataset is used to demonstrate their effectiveness as well, in which case an array of cubic Au nanoparticles with a size of 50 nm is imaged. We show that with the presence of Poisson noise, a dataset with photon counts up to 10 4 at one detector pixel already requires ML-based methods to achieve a stable convergence. Among the three algorithms derived in this work, APG method is reported first time for its application in ptychographic reconstruction and shows superior performance in terms of both accuracy and convergence rate with a noisy dataset.

Multigrid Optimization for Large-Scale Ptychographic Phase Retrieval

Ptychography is a popular imaging technique that combines diffractive imaging with scanning microscopy. The technique consists of a coherent beam that is scanned across an object in a series of overlapping positions, leading to reliable and improved reconstructions. Ptychographic microscopes allow for large fields to be imaged at high resolution at the cost of additional computational expense. Herein, we propose a multigrid-based optimization framework to reduce the computational burdens of large-scale ptychographic phase retrieval. Our proposed method exploits the inherent hierarchical structures in ptychography through tailored restriction and prolongation operators for the object and data domains. Our numerical results show that our proposed scheme accelerates the convergence of its underlying solver and outperforms the ptychographical iterative engine, a workhorse in the optics community.

Shallow cumulus entrainment: observational retrieval, physical interpretation, and climate impacts (Final grant report)

This document constitutes a final technical report for DE-SC0020083, a research grant awarded by the US Department of Energy Office of Science, to Prof. Daniel Kirshbaum at McGill University. The original research proposal, entitled "Shallow cumulus entrainment: observational retrieval, physical interpretation, and climate impacts", defined four scientific objectives that synthesized ARM observations with turbulence-permitting large-eddy simulations (LES) to quantify and understand the process of cumulus entrainment, whereby a cumulus cloud ingests surrounding air through its lateral edges. These objectives included developing observational climatologies of cumulus bulk entrainment rate at two ARM observatories, physical interpretation of these findings using LES, quantification of the impacts of subcloud circulations on entrainment, and the climate impacts of flow-dependent entrainment variations. In the six years that have elapsed since the grant was awarded (three funded years and three no-cost annual extensions), all four of the objectives were successfully addressed. Four personnel were trained (one B.Sc., one M.Sc. to completion, five years of Ph.D. training, and 2.5 years of postdoctoral training), eight peer-reviewed articles were published in high-impact journals, and 20 presentations were delivered (three invited).

What Polarimetric Weather Radars Offer to Cloud Modelers: Forward Radar Operators and Microphysical/Thermodynamic Retrievals

The utilization of polarimetric weather radars for optimizing cloud models is a next frontier of research. It is widely understood that inadequacies in microphysical parameterization schemes in numerical weather prediction (NWP) models is a primary cause of forecast uncertainties. Due to its ability to distinguish between hydrometeors with different microphysical habits and to identify “polarimetric fingerprints” of various microphysical processes, polarimetric radar emerges as a primary source of needed information. There are two approaches to leverage this information for NWP models: (1) radar microphysical and thermodynamic retrievals and (2) forward radar operators for converting the model outputs into the fields of polarimetric radar variables. In this paper, we will provide an overview of both. Polarimetric measurements can be combined with cloud models of varying complexity, including ones with bulk and spectral bin microphysics, as well as simplified Lagrangian models focused on a particular microphysical process. Combining polarimetric measurements with cloud modeling can reveal the impact of important microphysical agents such as aerosols or supercooled cloud water invisible to the radar on cloud and precipitation formation. Some pertinent results obtained from models with spectral bin microphysics, including the Hebrew University cloud model (HUCM) and 1D models of melting hail and snow coupled with the NSSL forward radar operator, are illustrated in the paper.

Start-up of Silo 130 Waste Retrieval at La Hague: first Step Towards Reducing Legacy Inventory - 20020

On June 25, 2019, the first grapple of waste and debris was lifted from Silo 130, one of the most challenging legacy waste storage silos at La Hague. This was the achievement of more than ten years of studies and efforts focused on solving some very unique technical and safety challenges, and on designing an innovative, efficient solution. The waste is from de-cladding materials from past Gas-Cooled Reactor fuel reprocessing operations. It is an unsorted mixture of magnesium cladding pieces, graphite debris, and various other metallic waste types. These materials can be chemically reactive and therefore need specific dispositions for handling and storing. The building is more than 40 years old and does not meet modern standards. French safety authorities have required the silo to be emptied. After about three years of operation, the bulk of this waste will be removed and placed in safe storage, pending the selection of a final conditioning solution. Removal of bottom debris will then be possible. When finished, this operation will bring a conclusion to a significant legacy-related hazard on the site. The silo will then be available for final cleaning and de-activation. This paper will describe the technical, safety, and economical challenges, and the various decisions and optimizations that led to the definition of the process and technology to be implemented. Several innovative features were developed and implemented, in all sections of the project: project organization, progressive approach for the waste disposition strategy, light building design, customized and robust retrieval technology, processing technologies involving the most modern robotic and sorting techniques, storage method... Several of these first-of-a-kind innovative features have been developed and qualified specifically for this application, using the detailed qualification procedure specified for all La Hague projects. The facility was built in less than five years, overcoming various difficulties along the line. Commissioning is now finished with the combined efforts of the project, engineering, start-up, and operating teams assisted by dedicated suppliers. The facility is now ramping-up. The paper will also report on the commissioning and start-up of the facility and describe the first operational results. (authors)

Replica wormhole and information retrieval in the SYK model coupled to Majorana chains

Motivated by recent studies of the information paradox in (1+1)-D anti-de Sitter spacetime with a bath described by a (1+1)-D conformal field theory, we study the dynamics of second Ŕenyi entropy of the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model (χ) coupled to a Majorana chain bath (ψ). The system is prepared in the thermofield double (TFD) state and then evolved by HL + HR. For small system-bath coupling, we find that the second Rényi entropy $S^(2)_{χL,χR}$ of the SYK model undergoes a first order transition during the evolution. In the sense of holographic duality, the long-time solution corresponds to a “replica wormhole”. The transition time corresponds to the Page time of a black hole coupled to a thermal bath. We further study the information scrambling and retrieval by introducing a classical control bit, which controls whether or not we add a perturbation in the SYK system. The mutual information between the bath and the control bit shows a positive jump at the Page time, indicating that the entanglement wedge of the bath includes an island in the holographic bulk.
