ECAR-6599 Rev 0 PCAT Walls Temperature Distribution, Beryllium Inserts and Fuel-to-Fuel Gap Tolerance Analysis

This document reports the primary coolant system structures temperature distribution for the Primary Coolant Apparatus Test (PCAT) of the MARVEL microreactor. The temperature distributions have been calculated using the RELAP5-3D system code, using one-dimensional approximation, and considering radial heat losses, effects of thermal insulators, and hot spot factors. Sensitivities on the Be inserts dimensions tolerances and heater-to-heater pitch has been also performed, investigating the effects on the NaK and heater cartridge sheath temperatures.

Advanced Modeling and Simulation to Characterize Advanced Boiling Water Reactor Source Terms to Support a Regulatory Approval Pathway for Right-Sized Emergency Planning Zone. Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (A-BWR) Project Phase 2

The United States Department of Energy (US DOE) is currently supporting the development of various small modular reactor (SMR), microreactor and advanced reactor designs. These reactors have improved safety features as compared to conventional Large Light Water Reactors (LLWRs), which include features that improve potential reduction of radiological source terms in the event of design and beyond-design basis accidents. Specifically, some reactors feature a relatively smaller containment volume with respect to the available surface area for fission product deposition; these include Integrated Pressurized Water Reactors (iPWRs), such as the NuScale SMR and SMR-type Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs) such as General Electric-Hitachi’s BWRX-300 design.

Assessment of Numerical Diffusion in NRELAP5 Code for Density Wave Oscillations Applications

Density wave oscillation (DWO) in a boiling channel can be a delicate phenomenon, and the precision of numerical tools can influence predictions. In this paper, relevant numerical diffusion was analyzed for the finite difference schemes used in the NRELAP5 code. The numerical diffusion in NRELAP5 was investigated under both single-phase and two-phase conditions. A unique perturbation technique called the “V” ramping approach was introduced, and the NRELAP5-predicted DWO results were then compared to test data.

Development of New Reactor Core Configuration for Power Uprate - Fuel Reload & Heat Processing Analyses, Core Design, System Safety Assessments, and Fuel Performance Analyses

With the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act in 2021 and the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) in 2022, the United States stands at a critical juncture for the future of nuclear power. These landmark policies provide significant support for clean energy initiatives, positioning nuclear power as a key component of the nation’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions and achieve energy security. This growing emphasis on nuclear energy is driven by the need for reliable, low-carbon power sources as the country transitions away from fossil fuels. Federal policy, along with increasing state-level support, is encouraging investment in nuclear technology advancements to meet these demands. Building new nuclear power plants (NPPs), however, presents significant challenges due to high costs and long construction timelines. As a result, increasing the power output of existing NPPs through power uprates has emerged as a more feasible and cost-effective strategy. One key area of advancement is the development of accident-tolerant fuel (ATF), such as chromium-coated zirconium alloy cladding, which offers enhanced material performance, enabling power uprates in light water reactors (LWRs). Given the growing demand for nuclear energy fueled by federal policies and state initiatives, it is essential to evaluate the feasibility and benefits of significant power uprates in existing pressurized water reactors (PWRs) using advanced fuel technologies. The introduction of ATF concepts opens new opportunities for safely and economically achieving these power increases. Assessing whether these innovations can support substantial power uprates while maintaining operational safety is crucial to maximizing the potential of the nation’s existing nuclear infrastructure. This project aims to explore how power uprates can be achieved by boosting reactor thermal power output and optimizing reactor core design, while ensuring the safety and economic viability of NPPs. Specifically, it will focus on demonstrating the technical and economic feasibility of power uprates in a PWR using low 5-10% enrichment uranium (LEU+) high burnup (HBU) fuel combined with ATF concepts. In fiscal year 2024 (FY24), the research and development focus on building foundational models and conducting multi-physics performance and safety analyses to support the power uprate. The findings of the study would be shared through LWRS Seasonal Meetings, conferences and workshops with utility companies and researchers. These also serve as a basis for further study of fuel reloading optimization with ATF claddings.

Preliminary MITR Design-Demonstration Element Thermal-Hydraulics and Structural Analyses

The United State High Performance Research Reactor (USHPRR) program aims to eliminate more than 200kg of High Enriched Uranium (HEU) from commerce annually by converting five U.S. high-performance research reactors and one associated critical assembly to Low Enriched Uranium (LEU) fuel using a high-density alloy of uranium-10 wt% molybdenum (U-10Mo). Massachusetts Institute of Technology Reactor (MITR) is one of five research reactors selected for this program. The objective of this report is to provide preliminary thermal-hydraulic and mechanical analyses of the hydrodynamic effects in the MITR Design Demonstration Element (DDE) under conservative approximations for the plate power distribution. This report provides details on the modeling approach and the simulation results obtained, including pressure, flow velocity, temperature, and oxide layer over the design demonstration experiment for the irradiation cycles in the Belgian Reactor (BR)-2.

Supporting New Advanced Nuclear Technologies for Commercial-Maritime Applications

The ANS summary doesn't require an abstract, but I will produce one for the purpose of LRS: The large demand for maritime nuclear power underscores the need for experimental campaigns and modeling and simulation of new advanced reactors, which offer numerous advantages in terms of safety, efficiency, and compactness. INL, through the work conducted by NRIC and ABS, has addressed some of the technical, regulatory, and economic aspects of potential nuclear commercial maritime applications. However, on the technical side, there remain important physical phenomena, particularly for advanced reactors, that are not yet fully understood. Addressing these knowledge gaps requires a combination of experiments and advanced modeling and simulation techniques. INL possesses significant expertise in Multiphysics modeling and simulation. By collaborating with INL, the maritime nuclear sector can leverage this expertise to advance the development and deployment of innovative nuclear technologies.
