Design of an optical amplifier for amplified OSC in IOTA facility at Fermilab

Optical stochastic cooling (OSC) is a cutting-edge beam cooling technology to reduce, control the 3 dimensional spread and the motion of particle beams. It has recently been successfully, experimentally, demonstrated in Fermilab's IOTA storage ring, marking a major step forward in beam cooling. OSC has the potential to significantly improve both the performance and flexibility as a beam cooling system. One promising way to boost OSC performance is by adding a high-gain optical amplifier. However, this amplifier must be carefully designed to meet the specific constraints of the OSC system. A major challenge lies in the limited optical delay, which is just 6 mm for the case of IOTA, set by the beam bypass, restricts us to use a short-length gain medium. This, along with IOTA’s high repetition rate and the relatively long duration of the optical pulses, limits the peak power available for the pump laser without damaging the crystal, which is crucial for achieving strong nonlinear gain. Additionally, it's essential to preserve the phase coherence of the undulator radiation during amplification, which further complicates the amplifier design. This report details a specialized amplifier setup that addresses these challenges, includes simulations of the integrated system, and summarizes the latest experimental progress and results.

Continuously variable voltage-controlled phase shifter

Phase shifter circuit adjusts the phase relationship between a locally generated reference frequency and a received RF signal applied to a phase-coherent detector. It is small enough to be integrated into a receiver subassembly and operates on command from remote control panels.

Minicomputer-controlled programmed oscillator

Two programmed oscillators have been constructed, each using a low-cost minicomputer for the calculation and control functions, and each contained in a single rack of equipment. They are capable of operation in a phase-tracking mode as well as a frequency-tracking mode. When given an ephemeris suitable for the planet Venus, these units maintained phase coherence of better than 5 deg rms at 2388 MHz.

Viterbi decoding for satellite and space communication.

Convolutional coding and Viterbi decoding, along with binary phase-shift keyed modulation, is presented as an efficient system for reliable communication on power limited satellite and space channels. Performance results, obtained theoretically and through computer simulation, are given for optimum short constraint length codes for a range of code constraint lengths and code rates. System efficiency is compared for hard receiver quantization and 4 and 8 level soft quantization. The effects on performance of varying of certain parameters relevant to decoder complexity and cost are examined. Quantitative performance degradation due to imperfect carrier phase coherence is evaluated and compared to that of an uncoded system. As an example of decoder performance versus complexity, a recently implemented 2-Mbit/sec constraint length 7 Viterbi decoder is discussed. Finally a comparison is made between Viterbi and sequential decoding in terms of suitability to various system requirements.

Automatic carrier acquisition system for phase-lock-loop receivers

Programmable oscillator and zero-beat detector acquires phase-lock of carrier by frequency scanning. Generation of high-level dc pulse at instant of zero crossing provides positive trigger for decision gate to stop search and close loop for phase-coherent tracking.

A new device for communication systems

A communication device and modulation capability were developed for the transmission of digital data or voices from point to point. This device is a fast-switching phase coherent frequency synthesizer. When this synthesizer is appropriately incorporated in a communication system it can provide interference resistance, multiple-user capability, user identification, ranging, navigation, Doppler correction, and digitized communication (voice and data). The application of this device to aircraft/airport complex and law enforcement communications is discussed.

Earth-moon mass ratio from Mariner 9 radio tracking data.

The phase-coherent range and Doppler tracking data obtained as a basis for the navigation of the Mariner 9 spacecraft from earth to Mars determine also the earth-moon mass ratio. As the earth revolves about the center of mass of the earth-moon system, a sinusoidal curve is impressed on the range and Doppler tracking data with a frequency equal to the sidereal mean motion of the moon. The mass ratio was determined from range and Doppler data obtained over a period of 15 weeks. The results from the Mariner Mars 1971 data are presented in a table together with previous results obtained in connection with other spacecraft.

Relativity time-delay experiments utilizing 'Mariner' spacecraft

Relativity predicts that the transit time of a signal propagated from the earth to a spacecraft and retransmitted back to earth ought to exhibit an additional, variable time delay. The present work describes some of the analytical techniques employed in experiments using Mariner spacecraft designed to test the accuracy of this prediction. Two types of data are analyzed in these relativity experiments; these include phase-coherent, two-way Doppler shift and round-trip, transit-time measurements. Results of Mariner 6 and 7 relativistic time-delay experiments are in agreement with Einstein's theory of general relativity with an uncertainty of 3%.

Study of exothermic processes in shock ignited gases by the use of laser shear interferometry

Report on measurements of maximum exothermic power pulses attainable from a given chemical system. Experimental tests involved the use of a shock tube technique whereby the exothermic process of combustion was controlled by reflected shock, so that it occurred under virtually inviscid flow conditions, while the measurements were performed at a resolution commensurate with the actual rate of chemical reaction. Experimental observations were made by means of a novel method of laser shear interferometry - a cross-breed between holography and the conventional means for measuring refractive index fields, in that, on one hand, it was based on the exploitation of the phase coherence of the laser light beam, recording first a diffraction image of the wave fronts which, for the desired final result, had to be optically reconstructed, and, on the other, it yielded eventually either two-dimensional interferograms or schlieren photographs of the observed phenomena.

Transmitter switch for high-power microwave output

Combiner system can be used for combining output powers of two transmitters or for switching from one to the other. This can be done when pair of transmitters operate on same frequency and carriers are phase coherent as by excitation from single exciter.

A model for generation of bow-shock-associated upstream waves

A model is proposed for the generation of upstream hydromagnetic waves by proton beams reflected at the earth's bow shock. It is assumed that the reflection process can produce some gyrophase bunching of the protons, thus creating a gyrophase disturbance that propagates with the beam as it streams back along interplanetary field lines. This leads to the production of driven hydromagnetic waves in the left-hand mode. The resulting theory predicts a wave amplitude, frequency, and polarization in the solar wind rest frame. The amplitude depends on the fraction of protons assumed to be phase coherent in their gyromotion and on the plasma beta, beam velocity, temperatures, and the Alfven Mach number. The theory also predicts the Doppler-shifted frequencies and the apparent sense of polarization that would be observed in satellite measurement frames.

Berkeley heterodyne interferometer

A prototype heterodyne stellar interferometer has been built in order to demonstrate the feasibility of heterodyne techniques in measuring angular diameters of bright infrared stars. The first system tests were performed in December 1972. Attention is given to investigations concerning the possibility that optical air turbulence within the structure of the solar telescope employed can possibly destroy the phase coherence of the fringe signals.

A study of Pb-204 partition in lunar samples using terrestrial and meteoritic analogues

Pb-204, Bi, Tl, and Zn have been measured in Apollo 16 samples and Apollo 17 orange soil. These data in addition to already reported Apollo 14 and 15 Pb-204 results and literature data are used to support the Pb-204-metallic phase coherence. The partition of Pb-204 into very fine metallic grains appears to be the result of an impact process rather than metal segregation in a magma.

Combined GaAs laser outputs

Technique for combining outputs of array of small semiconductor lasers increases total output power while relaxing fabrication tolerances to make manufacture potentially less costly. Advantage of free-running mode is that spacing between junction-diode lasers is less critical than for conventional, phase-coherently coupled arrays.
