Robust Measurement of Stellar Streams around the Milky Way: Correcting Spatially Variable Observational Selection Effects in Optical Imaging Surveys

Observations of density variations in stellar streams are a promising probe of low-mass dark matter substructure in the Milky Way. However, survey systematics such as variations in seeing and sky brightness can also induce artificial fluctuations in the observed densities of known stellar streams. These variations arise because survey conditions affect both object detection and star–galaxy misclassification rates. To mitigate these effects, we use Balrog synthetic source injections in the Dark Energy Survey (DES) Y3 data to calculate detection rate variations and classification rates as functions of survey properties. We show that these rates are nearly separable with respect to survey properties and can be estimated with sufficient statistics from the synthetic catalogs. Applying these corrections reduces the standard deviation of relative detection rates across the DES footprint by a factor of 5, and our corrections significantly change the inferred linear density of the Phoenix stream when including faint objects. Additionally, for artificial streams with DES-like survey properties we are able to recover density power spectra with reduced bias. We also find that uncorrected power-spectrum results for Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST)-like data can be around 5 times more biased, highlighting the need for such corrections in future ground-based surveys.

Radiation-detector optical-imaging device is of simplified construction

A simplified radiation detector was designed which employs an activated continuous front surface consisting of either the diffused or barrier type of semiconducting material with a grid structure on the nonactivated side of the detector. Its form may be either a rectangular coordinate or a polar coordinate system.

A study of optical image sensors for the large space telescope.

A generalized approach is attempted to the problem of designing an image sensor that is to be used on a large spaceborne telescope. General design and performance goals are presented, and the parameters describing the sensor characteristics are discussed. Electrooptical techniques and components presently available are reviewed, and promising design orientations are explored.

Two-dimensional convolute integers for optical image data processing and surface fitting

An approach toward low-pass, high-pass and band-pass filtering is presented. Convolution coefficients possessing the filtering speed associated with a moving smoothing average without suffering a loss of resolution are discussed. Resolution was retained because the coefficients represented the equivalance of applying high order two-dimensional regression calculations to an image without considering the time-consuming summations associated with the usual normal equations. The smoothing (low-pass) and roughing (high-pass) aspects of the filters are a result of being derived from regression theory. The coefficients are universal integer valves completely described by filter size and surface order, and possess a number of symmetry properties. Double convolution lead to a single set of coefficients with an expanded mask which can yield band-pass filtering and the surface normal. For low order surfaces (0,1), the two-dimensional convolute integers were equivalent to a moving smoothing average.

Detection of H I, OH, CO, and optical imaging of the distant galaxy IRAS 12112 + 0305

The detection of H I absorption and OH and CO emission from the galaxy IRAS 12112 + 0305, which is receding from the sun at about 7 percent of the speed of light is reported. This galaxy, which appears to be an ongoing merger, radiates about 2 x 10 to the 12th solar luminosities in the infrared. The H I, OH, and CO spectra are indicative of large turbulent motions. From the millimeter wave CO observations, a total mass of molecular gas of 4 x 10 to the 10th solar masses is inferred. The OH emission in the 1667 MHz line is the most luminous extragalactic OH maser reported so far, with an isotropic luminosity of 1800 solar luminosities.
