Manufacturability-based optical design optimization for advanced Kirkpatrick–Baez X-ray focusing mirrors

The advanced Kirkpatrick–Baez (AKB) mirror setup is an effective and compelling solution to provide stable X-ray nano-focusing for synchrotron radiation or free-electron laser beamlines. We propose an AKB mirror design optimization approach to mitigate the difficulties associated with mirror fabrication by minimizing the total slope ranges of the four curved mirrors while achieving the expected focusing performance. In the optimization, we have considered geometry constraints to ensure the beam acceptance with the required clear aperture, the diffraction-limited focal size with the adequate numerical aperture, and the desired mirror gaps for adjustment and the necessary working distance for the sample stage. Additionally, practical constraints linked to mirror metrology and fabrication, such as mirror length limits and curvature uncertainty in measurement, are taken into account. Furthermore, progressive objective optimization eliminates the need for any initial guess, fully automating the AKB optimization process. This approach facilitates the development of an elegant Wolter-I or Wolter-III type AKB design solution that satisfies these multiple constraints. In cases where constraints cannot be simultaneously satisfied, the optimization results provide valuable insights into areas where trade-offs need to be considered. Simulations with ray tracing and wavefront propagation validate the optimized AKB design showing high tolerance to the beam incident angle.

Integrable optics design principles for beam halo suppression in accelerator rings at the intensity frontier

RadiaSoft LLC is collaborating with Fermilab to fundamentally advance the field of particle accelerator design, in order to reduce cost and technical risk for next-generation hadron accelerators, and to more rapidly advance the intensity frontier of high energy physics. The Fermilab PI is one of the originators of the theory of integrable nonlinear magnetic lattices. Fermilab is the only laboratory in the world pursuing the experimental verification of the theory. Transferring Fermilab expertise to RadiaSoft LLC will enhance US competitiveness by enabling US industry to engage in the design of future high intensity hadron rings for spallation sources, neutrino sources, muon sources, subcritical nuclear reactors and waste transmutation facilities.

Optical design of a stigmatic spectroheliometer for photometric studies of dynamic phenomena at extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths

The design of a stigmatic spectroheliometer for photometric studies of dynamic phenomena in the solar atmosphere at extreme ultraviolet (EUV) wavelengths is described. The normal-incidence spectrometer requires only one reflective surface, and is equipped with a series of exit slits and associated one-dimensional detector arrays that are mounted at the secondary (vertical) foci of the concave diffraction grating. It is shown that such a spectrometer mounted at the focus of an off-axis paraboloid telescope mirror of the size employed in the EUV spectroheliometer flown on Skylab could record monochromatic images of a 2 x 2 (arcmin) sq field-of-view with a spatial resolution element of 1 x 1 (arcsec) sq in a time of 4 s, 24 s, or 4 min, depending on whether the region studied is flaring, active, or quiet. The resulting spectroheliograms would have an average photometric precision of 10% and a spectral purity of 0.1 A.

DSN 70-meter antenna microwave optics design and performance improvements. Part 1: Design optimization

The design optimizations associated with the microwave and structural upgrade of the DSN 64-m antennas are discussed. Expected area efficiency/gain performances at S- and X-band are given for both the original 64-m systems and the upgraded 70-m systems, and error estimates are developed. The DSN 70-m Upgrade Project specifications, based on predesign estimates, were 1.4-dB gain at S-band and 1.9-dB at X-band, with no degradation to critical receiving system noise temperatures. The measurements show an S-band gain increase of 1.9 dB and an average increase of 2.1 dB at X-band. The Project also delivered small receiving system noise decreases at both frequency bands. The three DSN 70-m antennas, in the initial state of mechanical adjustment as of the end of calendar year 1988, are performing with very high peak microwave area efficiencies at very nearly the engineering design expectations of 76 percent at S-band and 71 percent at X-band.

DSN 70-meter antenna microwave optics design and performance improvements. Part 2: Comparison with measurements

The measured Deep Space Network (DSN) 70-meter antenna performance at S- and X-bands is compared with the design expectations. A discussion of natural radio-source calibration standards is given. New estimates of DSN 64-meter antenna performance are given, based on improved values of calibration source flux and size correction. A comparison of the 64- and 70-meter performances shows that average S-band peak gain improvement is 1.94 dB, compared with a design expectation of 1.77 dB. At X-band, the average peak gain improvement is 2.12 dB, compared with the (coincidentally similar) design expectation of 1.77 dB. The average measured 70-meter S-band peak gain exceeds the nominal design-expected gain by 0.02 dB; the average measured 70-meter X-band peak gain is 0.14 dB below the nominal design-expected gain.

SOFIA Optical Design for the Aft Configuration

The Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) is a planned NASA facility consisting of an infrared telescope of 2.5 meter system aperture flying in a modified Boeing 747. It will have an image diameter of 1.5 arc seconds, an operating wavelength range from visible through 1 millimeter, an 8 arc minute field of view, and a chopping secondary. the configuration is a Cassegrian with a diagonal tertiary to direct the beam to a Nasmyth focus. The new choice of a location aft of the wings allows the primary mirror to have about an f/1.4 focal ratio, which is preferable to f/1.1 previously planned for the forward location.

Optical Design of Segmented Hexagon Array Solar Mirror

A segmented array of mirrors was designed for a solar concentrator test stand at MSFC for firing solar thermal propulsion engines. The 144 mirrors each have a spherical surface to approximate a parabolic concentrator when combined into the entire 18-foot diameter array. The mirror segments are aluminum hexagons that had the surface diamond turned and quartz coated. The array focuses sunlight reflected from a heliostat to a 4 inch diameter spot containing 10 kw of power at the 15-foot focal point. The derivation of the surface figure for the respective mirror elements is shown. The alignment process of the array is discussed and test results of the system's performance is given.
