Anion photoelectron spectroscopic and relativistic coupled-cluster studies of uranyl dichloride anion, UO 2 Cl 2 –

A joint relativistic coupled-cluster and experimental photoelectron (PE) spectroscopic study of the uranyl dichloride anion, UO 2 Cl 2 – , is reported. Sophisticated electronic-structure calculations predict the photodetachment of UO 2 Cl 2 – to involve a U 5f electron and to be followed by significant geometry relaxation. Therefore, the adiabatic electron affinity (EA a ) of the uranyl dichloride neutral molecule, UO 2 Cl 2 , and the vertical detachment energy (VDE) of its anion, UO 2 Cl 2 – , provide valuable information about its uranium 5f orbital energies. The EA a value was computed to be 3.15 eV. The VDE value was calculated to be 3.55 eV by augmenting the computed EA a with a shift derived from a Franck–Condon simulation using coupled-cluster potential energy surfaces. Here, the VDE, which corresponds to the highest intensity peak in the PE spectrum, was measured to be 3.69 ± 0.20 eV, in good agreement with the computed value. The origin transition in the PE spectrum, whose electron binding energy corresponds to the EA a , was assigned to the feature at 3.2 ± 0.20 eV, consistent with the computed EA a .

Dependence of Uranium Oxide Polymorphism on Plasma Synthesis Conditions

Here, we synthesized uranium oxide nanoparticles using a plasma flow reactor (PFR) and studied the effects of three different experimental parameters on the resulting morphologies and speciation of the particles: (1) collection duration, (2) collection substrate temperature, and (3) radial collection position due to radial temperature gradients in the PFR. We also induced three distinct temperature histories along the axis of the plasma flow reactor by varying the gas flow rates downstream of the plasma torch. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses of collected particles showed two phases of uranium oxides (fcc-UO 2 and α-UO 3 ). The chemical compositions of the resulting uranium oxide particles were not altered by the three parameters investigated in this work but varied based on the temperature history induced. Preheating of the collection substrate led to deposition of fewer particles, which is attributed to a reduction in thermophoretic force caused by the reduced temperature gradient for preheated substrates. The relative amounts of UO 2 to UO 3 and particle size varied depending on the cooling history employed during synthesis.

Measurement of the 175 Hf half-life

Hafnium-175 is a useful radioisotope for numerous applications; however, its evaluated half-life (70 ± 2 days) has a large uncertainty. To enable a new measurement of the half-life, 175 Hf was produced via proton irradiation of natural lutetium and chemically purified. The 175 Hf sample was counted approximately once a month with three high-purity germanium detectors for 13 months (~5.5 half-lives). A 133 Ba standard was counted in an identical manner to quantify systematic uncertainties over the measurement period. In conclusion, the measured 175 Hf half-life is 69.90 ± 0.07 days, in agreement with the evaluated value, but with significantly reduced uncertainty.

Improving Elemental Ratio Measurements on Uranyl Fluoride with NanoSIMS

Measurements on samples of calcined uranyl fluoride (UO 2 F 2 ) using Raman spectroscopy, electron microscopy with elemental analysis, and secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) indicate four facts. First, UO 2 F 2 undergoes a previously unreported oxidation reaction beginning around 350 °C in air. The resulting oxidation compound is likely similar to U 3 O 8 /UO 3 , but presently represents a novel chemical species. Second, variations in F/U ratio across samples as measured by electron microscopy with x-ray spectroscopy correlate with variations in F/U ratio as measured with the NanoSIMS 50L instrument. Third, simple mixed powders of LaF 3 +U 3 O 8 are not sufficiently homogeneous to act as a high F+U content standard material. Fourth, additional method development for determining the bulk F/U ratio using an alternative technique is necessary to further develop analytical standards.

Large Surface Explosion Coupling Experiment - SNL Remote Optical.

Two surface chemical explosive tests were observed for the Large Surface Explosion Coupling Experiment (LSECE) at the Nevada National Security Site in October 2020. The tests consisted of two one-ton explosions, one occurring before dawn and one occurring mid- afternoon. LSECE was performed in the same location as previous underground tests and aimed to explore the relationship between surface and underground explosions in support of global nonproliferation efforts. Several pieces of remote sensing equipment were deployed from a trailer 2.02 km from ground zero including high-speed cameras, radiometers and a spectrometer. The data collected from these tests will increase the knowledge of large surface chemical explosive signatures.

Demonstration of Microwave Resonant Cavity Transducer Performance in Fluid Flow Sensing: Development of Sensor Performance Model of Microwave Cavity Flow Meter for Advanced Reactor High Temperature Fluids

We are investigating a microwave cavity-based transducer for in-core high-temperature fluid flow sensing in molten salt cooled reactors (MSCR) and sodium fast reactors (SFR). This sensor is a hollow metallic cylindrical cavity. The principle of sensing consists of making one wall of the cylindrical cavity flexible enough so that dynamic pressure, which is proportional to fluid velocity, will cause membrane deflection. Membrane deflection causes cavity volume change, which leads to a shift in the resonant frequency. To validate sensor physics, we have performed proof-of-principle test of flow sensing in water. For this test, we have developed a cylindrical resonator for K-band, which was machined from brass. The cavity was excited through WR-42 waveguide through a subwavelength hole on the side of the wall of the cylinder. To increase the spectral signal visibility, we developed a signal processing method for baseline subtraction. A flow loop for proof-of-principle test of transducer performance in water was assembled. A commercial flow meter was installed in the loop for reference measurements. Cylindrical cavity was excited in the TEM 011 mode with resonant frequency f ≈ 17.8GHz. Frequency shift of cavity spectral response was obtained by gradually increasing water flow rate from 0 to 60gpm. Corresponding monotonic increase of resonant frequency shift by several MHz was observed.

Alternative Technologies Meta Study Report

Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was tasked to conduct a meta-study to assess peer-reviewed published, in-vivo murine, radiation biology studies that utilize X-ray irradiators. The study is intended to support a more general effort to facilitate the adoption of X-ray technologies to identify best practices that can be implemented by potential adopters, or those who are still unfamiliar with X-ray technology. The meta-study identified over 450 published papers in the last four years (September 2017 through August 2021). The review builds upon the more extensive meta-study published by the Draeger Report (June 2019) and facilitates a more recent assessment of methodological practices in the use of X-ray irradiators.

Temperature dependent index of refraction compensation and radiation resistance in monolithic optical systems

Monolithic catadioptric optical systems are susceptible to defocus errors caused by inhomogeneous temperature within the glass material due to temperature dependent index of refraction. This invention discloses methods to mitigate these errors using tuned materials in its optical design coupled with active optical radiative heating to provide optimal performance and includes methods to enhance radiation resistance.

Multimodal Instrument Concepts for Chemical Sciences at Second Target Station

The development of advanced chemical and energy systems is inherently complex, relying heavily on their unique pathways. Because no two catalysts or batteries follow exactly the same kinetic trajectories, conventional sequential measurements often obscure crucial relationships between structure and dynamics through statistical averaging. This report introduces two neutron scattering instrument concepts for the Second Target Station (STS) specifically designed to overcome this barrier: the Extended Q-range Diffractometer (EQD) and the Multimodal Chemical Spectrometer (MCS).

Using the Monte Carlo Method to Evaluate the Reliability of Screening Multifamily Housing for Radon

When screening for radon in a multifamily housing complex using a fixed sample density (e.g., testing 1 in 10 (10%) or 1 in 4 units (25%)), the statistical confidence is dependent upon the assumed elevated radon frequency. For example, testing 25% of units in a complex estimated to have eight units with elevated radon levels will provide 90% confidence. However, if it is assumed that, in the same complex, there are only three units with elevated radon levels, the confidence drops to around 58% for the same sample density. Furthermore, in the previous example, if elevated radon levels are not found during the screening, all that can be stated is that the screening provides 90% confidence that there are no more than seven units in the complex with elevated radon levels. To more fully illustrate this uncertainty, ten separate multifamily housing radon data sets with 1 to 10 units with radon levels ≥4 pCi/L (Table 1) were selected for analysis using the Monte Carlo statistical method. Unlike other mathematically based statistical approaches, the Monte Carlo statistical method relies on repeated analysis of randomly selected data. from a 100% sampled complex at various sample densities. Success for each simulation is defined as finding at least one unit with elevated radon levels. In this statistical method, confidence in the overarching conclusion can be greatly enhanced by repeating the simulated screening hundreds or even thousands of times. For this study, each of the ten data sets was simulated 1,000 times. For each simulation, the data set was randomized three times before the fixed percentage of data was selected.

Persistent radicals in irradiated imidazolium ionic liquids probed by EPR spectroscopy

Long-lived radicals were observed in irradiated room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) composed of the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion (Tf 2 N - ) with 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium (hmim + ) and1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium (bmim+) cations. The EPR signal intensity increases within hours and the spectral pattern changes during the time after irradiation. The kinetics data obtained indicate the existence of at least two distinct radical cations that have different formation and decay rates. We demonstrate that oxygen does not react rapidly with the radical species formed. The bmim + Tf 2 N - was selectively deuterated at various positions which allowed us to suggest possible structures of the stable radicals formed. The first structure is a radical cation containing 2 nitrogens and 6 protons all with ca. 8.2 Gauss hyperfine splittings, and 2 protons with 2.8 Gauss splitting. The structure of the second radical cation is similar, but characterized by an odd number of hydrogens with ca. 8.2 Gauss splitting. Extensive quantum chemistry calculations were performed to attempt to identify the structure of these persistent radicals. The most likely candidates are imidazole radical cations having methyl groups at the nitrogen atoms and substituents in the second position of the imidazole ring.
