Non-destructive identification of absorptive damage sites by photoluminescence brightening

We present a non-destructive photoluminescence (PL) imaging strategy for probing damage growth behavior in fused silica under laser irradiation. Transient wide-field PL image measurements were conducted at varying excitation intensities to investigate the dynamics of radiative defect generation and annihilation in laser-induced damage sites. Our results reveal that, while low excitation intensities predominantly induce PL quenching due to defect annihilation, high-intensity excitation (>0.3 GW/cm 2 at 532 nm) triggers pronounced PL brightening (PLB), indicative of radiative defect generation. Image analysis demonstrates that PLB events are strongly correlated with subsequent damage growth (10 J/cm 2 at 351 nm), whereas overall PL intensity is not. No optically detectable morphological changes were observed during PLB, confirming the non-destructive nature of the technique. We propose that PLB arises from defect-assisted absorption of multiple photons at pre-existing absorptive centers, which enhances local absorptivity and initiates further defect formation. These findings establish PLB monitoring as a sensitive diagnostic tool for identifying damage sites with elevated absorptivity, enabling targeted maintenance and improved laser damage management in optical materials.

Development and Commercialization of a Nanosegrated Oxygen Evolution Reaction Electrocatalyst (CRADA)

This collaborative project leverages advanced characterization tools, catalyst treatment and electrochemical testing capabilities at LBNL to help commercialize a bimetallic nanosegrated catalysts for oxygen evolution reaction in proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers. This project also has three industrial partners who are involved in catalyst scale-up synthesis, large electrode fabrication and large electrode electrochemical testing. This project investigates a broad range of topics including electrocatalysis, ink rheology and electrode fabrication and testing. This knowledge could help bridge the performance and durability gap from laboratory-developed materials (such as electrocatalysts) to applications in commercial devices. The research results also bring fundamental understanding of possible degradation mechanisms that occur under extremely oxidative potentials including material and morphological changes. The project will help accelerate the deployment of proton-exchange membrane water electrolyzers. The public benefits could include creating jobs and increasing public awareness of potential clean technologies for green hydrogen production. Ultimately, the project will help national wide effort of flighting climate change and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Neuropathological evaluation of monkeys exposed to body-alone X-radiation.

Investigation of the problem of whether morphological changes occurring in the central nervous system (CNS) following whole-body irradiation are attributable in part to abscopal factors. The 12 monkeys irradiated and the 6 that served as controls were chosen from a pool of 25 young monkeys. Over the postirradiation survival period of 14 days the hematocrit and hemoglobin values varied only slightly from the baseline values and from the values in the 6 control animals. White cell fractions were reduced in quantity but tended to recover relatively soon after irradiation. The design of this experiment was regarded as adequate to allow a conclusion whether pathological changes in the CNS of the irradiated animals differed from or exceeded those observed in the control animals. That such occurred on both counts in 3 of the 12 irradiated animals was evident. It appears that all the lesions must have been abscopally induced.

Development of advanced high strength tantalum base alloys. Phase 3: Influence of metallurgical condition on the mechanical properties of ASTAR-811C sheet

Metallurgical condition was shown to have a significant effect on the creep properties of ASTAR-811C (Ta-8W-1Re-0.7Hf-0.025C) sheet. Cold worked material exhibited creep rates 30 times higher than solution annealed material and 10 times greater than for recrystallized material. Both grain size and the carbide morphology changes as the final annealing temperature was raised from 3000 F to 3600 F. However, the lowest creep rates were achieved for material which retained the high temperature form of the Ta2C precipitate. Samples with GTA weldments had essentially identical properties as recrystallized base metal. Cooling rates from 3600 F of 5, 50, and 800 F deg/min. had little effect on the 2000 and 2400 F creep behavior of ASTAR-811C.

The effects of soil moisture and plant morphology on the radar backscatter from vegetation

The results of experimental studies on the backscattering properties of corn, milo, soybeans and alfalfa are presented. The measurements were made during the summer of 1973 over the 8 to 18 GHz frequency band. The data indicate that soil moisture estimation is best accomplished at incidence angles near nadir with lower frequencies, while crop discrimination is best accomplished using two frequencies at incidence angles ranging from 30 deg to 65 deg. It is also shown that temporal plant morphology variations can cause extreme variations in the values of the scattering coefficients. These morphological changes can be caused by growth, heavy rain and in the case of alfalfa, harvesting.

Ecology and Thermal Inactivation of Microbes in and on Interplanetary Space Vehicle Components

Spores of Bacillus subtilis var. niger were heat treated in aqueous suspension at 90 C, and observed for morphological changes and loss of viability. The 5 logs reduction that occurred in broth at 90 min required 210 min in buffered water. Five characteristic changes observed after spores were exposed 120 min at 90 C in buffered water were: (1) 90% loss of spore viability, (2) 5% stainability, (3) 76% increase in spore size (as observed by scanning electron microscopy), (4) 21% of spore areas remaining refractile, and (5) an increase of 77% in packed cell volume (PCV). Stainability and PCV changes were recognized only after secondary exposure in broth. Extended heat exposure (3 h at 90 C) resulted in 99% loss of spore viability and 99% loss of stainability. After 4 hours of heat exposure, 90% of the cells disintegrated. These results suggest that early germinal changes occurr concurrently with the early changes in the heat susceptibility of dormant spores.

Crop status evaluations and yield predictions

One phase of the large area crop inventory project is presented. Wheat yield models based on the input of environmental variables potentially obtainable through the use of space remote sensing were developed and demonstrated. By the use of a unique method for visually qualifying daily plant development and subsequent multifactor computer analyses, it was possible to develop practical models for predicting crop development and yield. Development of wheat yield prediction models was based on the discovery that morphological changes in plants are detected and quantified on a daily basis, and that this change during a portion of the season was proportional to yield.

An experimental investigation of olivine morphology

Results are reported for a morphological study of olivine and an experimental investigation performed to determine the degrees of supercooling and the cooling rates necessary to crystallize particular morphologies. Ten arbitrary categories of three-dimensional olivine crystal shape are identified: polyhedral, granular, hopper, chain, lattice, plate, branching, radiate, feather, and swallow-tail. The morphological study establishes that equant and tabular crystals are the common shapes of olivine, nonequant crystals are elongate parallel to the a or c axis, and skeletal crystals result when a particular form is missing or only partially developed. In the experiment, olivine crystals were grown by melting rock samples above their liquidus temperatures before initiating crystallization. The results show that olivine morphology changes systematically as a function of the degree of melt supercooling, the melt cooling rate, and the normative olivine and water contents of the melt. It is also found that each shape has a specific range of temperature stability which is essentially independent of melt composition.

The use of an ion-beam source to alter the surface morphology of biological implant materials

An electron bombardment, ion thruster was used as a neutralized-ion beam sputtering source to texture the surfaces of biological implant materials. Scanning electron microscopy was used to determine surface morphology changes of all materials after ion-texturing. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis was used to determine the effects of ion texturing on the surface chemical composition of some polymers. Liquid contact angle data were obtained for ion textured and untextured polymer samples. Results of tensile and fatigue tests of ion-textured metal alloys are presented. Preliminary data of tissue response to ion textured surfaces of some metals, polytetrafluoroethylene, alumina, and segmented polyurethane were obtained.

The geology of the Viking Lander 1 site

Stereo pictures show that Viking Lander 1 landed on volcanic terrain of undulating topography in the plains of Chryse. The bedrock is exposed along several ridge crests, and blocks are more numerous than can be attributed to impact ejecta. The presence of a variety of rock types suggests in situ weathering of extrusive and near-surface basaltic igneous rocks along a linear volcanic vent. Fine-grained sediment is present in drift complexes and isolated drifts. A small patch of fine-grained sediment slumped down one of the drift faces during the course of the Viking mission. Otherwise, no other morphological changes unrelated to spacecraft activity have been observed.

Effects of radiation upon the light-sensing elements of the retina as characterized by scanning electron microscopy

A model system using Necturus maculosus, the common mudpuppy, was established for evaluating effects of radiation upon the light-sensing elements of the retina. Accelerated heavy ions of helium and neon from the Berkeley Bevalac were used. A number of criteria were chosen to characterize radiation damage by observing morphological changes with the scanning electron microscope. The studies indicated retina sensitivity to high-LET (neon) particles at radiation levels below 10 rads (7 particles per visual element) whereas no significant effects were seen from fast helium ions below 50 rads.

Land use survey and mapping and water resources investigation in Korea

The author has identified the following significant results. Land use imagery is applicable to land use classification for small scale land use mapping less than 1:250,000. Land use mapping by satellite is more efficient and more cost-effective than land use mapping from conventional medium altitude aerial photographs. Six categories of level 1 land use classification are recognizable from MSS imagery. A hydrogeomorphological study of the Han River basin indicates that band 7 is useful for recognizing the soil and the weathering part of bed rock. The morphological change of the main river is accurately recognized and the drainage system in the area observed is easily classified because of the more or less simple rock type. Although the direct hydrological characteristics are not obtained from the MSS imagery, the indirect information such as the permeability of the soil and the vegetation cover, is helpful in interpreting the hydrological aspects.

Survey of ion plating sources

Based on the type of evaporation source, gaseous media and mode of transport, the following is discussed: resistance, electron beam, sputtering, reactive and ion beam evaporation. Ionization efficiencies and ion energies in the glow discharge determine the percentage of atoms which are ionized under typical ion plating conditions. The plating flux consists of a small number of energetic ions and a large number of energetic neutrals. The energy distribution ranges from thermal energies up to a maximum energy of the discharge. The various reaction mechanisms which contribute to the exceptionally strong adherence - formation of a graded sustrate/coating interface are not fully understood, however the controlling factors are evaluated. The influence of process variables on the nucleation and growth characteristics are illustrated in terms of morphological changes which affect the mechanical and tribological properties of the coating.
