Science challenges and research opportunities for plasma applications in microelectronics

Low-temperature plasmas (LTPs) are essential to manufacturing devices in the semiconductor industry, from creating extreme ultraviolet photons used in the most advanced lithography to thin film etching, deposition, and surface modifications. It is estimated that 40%–45% of all process steps needed to manufacture semiconductor devices use LTPs in one form or another. LTPs have been an enabling technology in the multidecade progression of the shrinking of device dimensions, often referred to as Moore’s law. New challenges in circuit and device design, novel materials, and increasing demands to achieve environmentally benign processing technologies require advances in plasma technology beyond the current state-of-the-art. The Department of Energy Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences held a workshop titled Plasma Science for Microelectronics Nanofabrication in August 2022 to discuss the plasma science challenges and technical barriers that need to be overcome to continue to develop the innovative plasma technologies required to support and advance the semiconductor industry. One of the key outcomes of the workshop was identifying a set of priority research opportunities (PROs) to focus attention on the most strategic plasma science challenges to address to benefit the semiconductor industry. For each PRO, scientific challenges and recommended strategies to address those challenges were identified. Furthermore, this article summarizes the PROs identified by the workshop participants.

Tidal Energy Resource Characterization, Bottom Lander Measurements, Cook Inlet, AK, 2021

These datasets are from tidal resource characterization measurements collected on the Terrasond High Energy Oceanographic Mooring (THEOM) from 1 July 2021 to 30 August 2021 (60 days) in Cook Inlet, Alaska. The lander was deployed at 60.7207031 N, 151.4294998 W in ~50 m of water. The dataset contains raw and processed data from the following two instruments: 1. A Nortek Signature 500 kHz acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP). Data were recorded in 4 Hz in the beam coordinate system from all 5 beams. Processed data has been averaged into 5 minutes bins and converted to the East-North-Up (ENU) coordinate system. 2. A Nortek Vector acoustic Doppler velocimeter (ADV). Data were recorded at 8 Hz in the beam coordinate system. Processed data has been averaged into 5 minutes bins and converted to the Streamwise - Cross-stream - Vertical (Principal) coordinate system. Turbulence statistics were calculated from 5-minute bins, with an FFT length equal to the bin length, and saved in the processed dataset. Data was read and analyzed using the DOLfYN (version 1.0.2) python package and saved in MATLAB (.mat) and netCDF (.nc) file formats. Files containing analyzed data (".b1") were standardized using the TSDAT (version 0.4.2) python package. NetCDF files can be opened using DOLfYN (e.g., `dat = dolfyn.load(''*.nc")`) or the xarray python package (e.g. `dat = xarray.open_dataset("*.nc"). All distances are in meters (e.g., depth, range, etc), and all velocities in m/s. See the DOLfYN documentation linked in the submission, and/or the Nortek documentation for additional details.

CalWave - Open Water Demonstration - Field Testing Content Models (10/21 - 7/22)

Data for the CalWave - Open Water Demonstration, a submerged pressure differential Wave Energy Converter (WEC) Device. Device is moored to the seabed, and the motion of the waves causes the sea level to rise and fall above the device, inducing a pressure differential in the device. The alternating pressure pumps fluid through a system to generate electricity, which is transmitted to shore via bidirectional cables. Documentation and data here includes: Open Water Demonstration, including field testing content models for nearly 10 months of continuous ocean operation, from October 2021 through July 2022.

TEAMER: Results of Investigating Structural Design Concepts and Alternative Materials for a Wave Power System

Included here are materials from a study on the design of a three-body Wave Energy Converter (WEC) utilizing a heave plate, dual Power Take Offs (PTOs), and single point mooring. A material trade study has been conducted to evaluate the effects of introducing various metallic and fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) elements to the design. The baseline design is C-Power's patented k2 Wave Power System (WPS). This Testing Expertise and Access for Marine Energy Research (TEAMER) Request for Technical Support (RFTS) 9 effort resulted in alternative designs of the WPS center member, the nacelle. The analysis resulting from this study will inform the design of a lightweight structure with lower manufacturing and operating costs that increases energy conversion and power-to-weight ratio of the device. The dataset contains several components: finite element analysis (FEA) data, hand calculations, and CAD models. FEA files includes those used for and generated by finite element simulations. Calculations include hand calculations performed using Microsoft Excel, which assess core laminate properties, buckling, and other structural aspects in accordance with risk management DNV-RP-C201 standards. CAD materials include Solidworks files for parts, assemblies, and drawings of the evaluated models.

TEAMER - Extreme Events Modeling for the MARMOK-OWC Wave Energy Converter

Through the TEAMER program, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) collaborated with IDOM Incorporated to study their MARMOK-Oscillating Water Column (MARMOK-OWC) wave energy conversion device. The study yielded a quantitative understanding of hydrodynamic pressures on the oscillating water column (OWC) device surfaces, the mooring tensions, and the dynamic performance of the device under extreme ocean wave conditions. This project utilized a comprehensive multi-phase Navier-Stokes flow solver with an overset body-fit mesh to predict fluid velocities and hydrodynamic forces on the MARMOK-OWC device. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis were conducted using OpenFOAM. This data includes the OpenFOAM cases (setup and data) to run the extreme events developed during the project. This project is part of the TEAMER RFTS 4 (request for technical support) program.
