On the S-matrix of Ising field theory in two dimensions

We explore the analytic structure of the non-perturbative S-matrix in arguably the simplest family of massive non-integrable quantum field theories: the Ising field theory (IFT) in two dimensions, which may be viewed as the Ising CFT deformed by its two relevant operators, or equivalently, the scaling limit of the Ising model in a magnetic field. Our strategy is that of collider physics: we employ Hamiltonian truncation method (TFFSA) to extract the scattering phase of the lightest particles in the elastic regime, and combine it with S-matrix bootstrap methods based on unitarity and analyticity assumptions to determine the analytic continuation of the 2 → 2 S-matrix element to the complex s-plane. Focusing primarily on the “high temperature” regime in which the IFT interpolates between that of a weakly coupled massive fermion and the E 8 affine Toda theory, we will numerically determine 3-particle amplitudes, follow the evolution of poles and certain resonances of the S-matrix, and exclude the possibility of unknown wide resonances up to reasonably high energies.

Infinite matrix product states for (1 + 1)-dimensional gauge theories

We present a matrix product operator construction that allows us to represent the lattice Hamiltonians of (abelian or non-abelian) gauge theories in a local and manifestly translation-invariant form. In particular, we use symmetric matrix product states and introduce link-enhanced matrix product operators (LEMPOs) that can act on both the physical and virtual spaces of the matrix product states. This construction allows us to study Hamiltonian lattice gauge theories on infinite lattices. As examples, we show how to implement this method to study the massless and massive one-flavor Schwinger model and adjoint QCD 2 .

Shear and bulk viscosity for a pure glue theory using an effective matrix model

At nonzero temperatures, the deconfining phase transition can be analyzed using an effective matrix model to characterize the change in holonomy. The model includes gluons and two-dimensional ghost fields in the adjoint representation, or “teens.” As ghosts, the teen fields are responsible for the decrease of the pressure as 𝑇 →𝑇 𝑑 , with 𝑇 𝑑 the transition temperature for deconfinement. Using the solution of this matrix model for a large number of colors, the parameters of the teen fields are adjusted so that the expectation value of the Polyakov loop is close to the values from the lattice. The shear, 𝜂, and bulk, 𝜁, viscosities are computed at nonzero holonomy to leading logarithmic order in weak coupling. In the pure glue theory, the value of the Polyakov loop is relatively large in the deconfined phase, ≈1/2 at 𝑇 𝑑 . Consequently, if 𝑠 is the entropy density, while 𝜂/𝑠 decreases as 𝑇 →𝑇 𝑑 , it is still well above the conformal bound. In contrast, 𝜁/𝑠 is largest at 𝑇 𝑑 , comparable to 𝜂/𝑠, then falls off rapidly with increasing temperature and is negligible by ∼2⁢𝑇 𝑑 .

Twisted bilayer graphene. I. Matrix elements, approximations, perturbation theory, and a k · p two-band model

We investigate the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) model of Bistritzer and MacDonald (BM) [Bistritzer and MacDonald, Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. 108, 12233 (2011)] to obtain an analytic understanding of its energetics and wave functions needed for many-body calculations. We provide an approximation scheme for the wave functions of the BM model, which first elucidates why the BM K M -point centered original calculation containing only four plane waves provides a good analytical value for the first magic angle (θ M ≈ 1°). The approximation scheme also elucidates why most of the many-body matrix elements in the Coulomb Hamiltonian projected to the active bands can be neglected. By applying our approximation scheme at the first magic angle to a Γ M -point centered model of six plane waves, we analytically understand the reason for the small Γ M -point gap between the active and passive bands in the isotropic limit w 0 = w 1 . Furthermore, we analytically calculate the group velocities of the passive bands in the isotropic limit, and show that they are almost doubly degenerate, even away from the Γ M point, where no symmetry forces them to be. Furthermore, moving away from the Γ M and K M points, we provide an explicit analytical perturbative understanding as to why the TBG bands are flat at the first magic angle, despite the first magic angle is defined by only requiring a vanishing K M -point Dirac velocity. We derive analytically a connected “magic manifold” w 1 = $2\sqrt{1 + w^{2}_{0}}$ $-\sqrt{2 + 3w^2_0}$, on which the bands remain extremely flat as w 0 is tuned between the isotropic (w 0 = w 1 ) and chiral (w 0 = 0) limits. We analytically show why going away from the isotropic limit by making w 0 less (but not larger) than w 1 increases the Γ M -point gap between the active and the passive bands. Finally, by perturbation theory, we provide an analytic Γ M point k ∙ p two-band model that reproduces the TBG band structure and eigenstates within a certain w 0 , w 1 parameter range. Further refinement of this model are discussed, which suggest a possible faithful representation of the TBG bands by a two-band Γ M point k ∙ p model in the full w 0 , w 1 parameter range.

Relaxation Matrix for Symmetric Tops with Inversion Symmetry: Line Coupling and Line Mixing Effects on NH3 Lines in the V4 Band

Line shape parameters including the half-widths and the off-diagonal elements of the relaxation matrix have been calculated for self-broadened NH3 lines in the perpendicular v4 band. As in the pure rotational and the parallel v1 bands, the small inversion splitting in this band causes a complete failure of the isolated line approximation. As a result, one has to use formalisms not relying on this approximation. However, due to differences between parallel and perpendicular bands of NH3, the applicability of the formalism used in our previous studies of the v1 band and other parallel bands must be carefully verified. We have found that, as long as potential models only contain components with K1 equals K2 equals 0, whose matrix elements require the selection rule delta k equals 0, the formalism is applicable for the v4 band with some minor adjustments. Based on both theoretical considerations and results from numerical calculations, the non-diagonality of the relaxation matrices in all the PP, RP, PQ, RQ, PR, and RR branches is discussed. Theoretically calculated self-broadened half-widths are compared with measurements and the values listed in HITRAN 2012. With respect to line coupling effects, we have compared our calculated intra-doublet off-diagonal elements of the relaxation matrix with reliable measurements carried out in the PP branch where the spectral environment is favorable. The agreement is rather good since our results do well reproduce the observed k and j dependences of these elements, thus validating our formalism.

The S-matrix of 2D type 0B string theory. Part I. Perturbation theory revisited

We study the perturbative S-matrix of closed strings in the two-dimensional type 0B string theory from the worldsheet perspective, by directly integrating correlation functions of N = 1 Liouville theory. The latter is computed numerically using recurrence relations for super-Virasoro conformal blocks. We show that the tree level 3- and 4-point amplitudes are in agreement with the proposed dual matrix quantum mechanics. The non-perturbative aspects of the duality will be analyzed in a companion paper.

Lie theoretic aspects of the Riccati equation

Various features of the application of Lie theory to matrix Riccati equations, of basic importance in control and system theories, are discussed. Particular consideration is given to centralizer foliation, the Cartan decomposition, matrix Riccati equations as Lie systems on Grassmanians, local analysis near a zero point of a vector field, linearization in homogeneous space, the tangent bundle in terms of partitioned matrices, and stability properties of fixed points of Riccati vector fields.

Confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model — A signature of M-theory?

We study the confinement/deconfinement transition in the D0-brane matrix model (often called the BFSS matrix model) and its one-parameter deformation (the BMN matrix model) numerically by lattice Monte Carlo simulations. Our results confirm general expectations from the dual string/M-theory picture for strong coupling. In particular, we observe the confined phase in the BFSS matrix model, which is a nontrivial consequence of the M-theory picture. We suggest that these models provide us with an ideal framework to study the Schwarzschild black hole, M-theory, and furthermore, the parameter region of the phase transition between type IIA superstring theory and M-theory. A detailed study of M-theory via lattice Monte Carlo simulations of the D0-brane matrix model might be doable with much smaller computational resources than previously expected.

Analysis of metal-matrix composite structures. I - Micromechanics constitutive theory. II - Laminate analyses

The micromechanical constitutive theory is used to examine the nonlinear behavior of continuous-fiber-reinforced metal-matrix composite structures. Effective lamina constitutive relations based on the Abouli micromechanics theory are presented. The inelastic matrix behavior is modeled by the unified viscoplasticity theory of Bodner and Partom. The laminate constitutive relations are incorporated into a first-order deformation plate theory. The resulting boundary value problem is solved by utilizing the finite element method. Attention is also given to computational aspects of the numerical solution, including the temporal integration of the inelastic strains and the spatial integration of bending moments. Numerical results the nonlinear response of metal matrix composites subjected to extensional and bending loads are presented.

Quantum Perturbation Theory Using Tensor Cores and a Deep Neural Network

In this work, time-independent quantum response calculations are performed using Tensor cores. This is achieved by mapping density matrix perturbation theory onto the computational structure of a deep neural network. The main computational cost of each deep layer is dominated by tensor contractions, i.e., dense matrix–matrix multiplications, in mixed-precision arithmetics, which achieves close to peak performance. Quantum response calculations are demonstrated and analyzed using self-consistent charge density-functional tight-binding theory as well as coupled-perturbed Hartree–Fock theory. For linear response calculations, a novel parameter-free convergence criterion is presented that is well-suited for numerically noisy low-precision floating point operations and we demonstrate a peak performance of almost 200 Tflops using the Tensor cores of two Nvidia A100 GPUs.

Interior radiances in optically deep absorbing media. I - Exact solutions for one-dimensional model.

An exact analytic solution to the one-dimensional scattering problem with arbitrary single scattering albedo and arbitrary surface albedo is presented. Expressions are given for the emergent flux from a homogeneous layer, the internal flux within the layer, and the radiative heating. A comparison of these results with the values calculated from the matrix operator theory indicates an exceedingly high accuracy. A detailed study is made of the error in the matrix operator results and its dependence on the accuracy of the starting value.
