Expanded Validation of Uranium Systems with the KENO Monte Carlo Codes and SCALE 6.2.4 [Slides]

There is likely a trend in bias for uranium-fueled systems as a function of spectrum, but probably not as a function of enrichment. Some enrichment trends appear, but are potentially the result of outlier experimental results; further investigation is needed where possible. There are good examples in this data of markedly different biases from different systems. Future work includes review and vetting for inclusion in the VALID library and analysis with TSUNAMI.

Status of the Slide Rule Update - Phase 4 Plutonium Configurations – Delayed Gamma [Slides]

The fourth phase of Slide-Rule update gives a calculation scheme for DFG doses and its application to five plutonium material, as well as comparisons between radiation transport and depletion codes such as MCNP, SCALE, COG and FISPACT. Overall, DFG dose rates calculated by each laboratory led to consistent results. Extra effort is under way to identify the cause of the remaining differences, especially for case 2, by comparing precisely the gamma source, and particularly nuclides inventories.

Nuclear data covariances are critical input to determine upper sub-critical limits and to design experiments to increase it [Slides]

This presentation discusses how Upper Subcritical Limits (USL) are key parameters to determine operational limits in nuclear criticality safety evaluations. It also discusses an example of plutonium casting operation using tantalum at LANL PF-4. The Whisper tool at Los Alamos relies on many inputs, including covariance data, leading the presentation to ask if an existing benchmark data be used in Whisper to adjust nuclear data and covariances to justify a higher USL. If not, Whisper can be used to help design an optimal new benchmark experiment. The presentation also seeks to determine what the possible impacts are on USL and operational limits for plutonium casting. In conclusion, nuclear data covariances are used for by Whisper for: GSSL adjustment of nuclear data and covariances, identification of most similar existing benchmark experiments to application, simulation of Upper Subcritical Limit of application, and input to optimization techniques for designing most appropriate new benchmark experiment(s) to meet requirements. This requires a complete set of nuclear data covariances, benchmarks and k-effective sensitivity profiles (for both benchmarks and applications). The presentation concludes by asking if end users should trust results that depend on current covariance data.

Coincident Capture through Post-processing PTRAC [Slides]

This presentation discusses the new PTRAC capabilities and workflows. The PTRAC capability in MCNP6.3 has seen a massive overhaul since MCNP6.2. The new HDF5 file format allows for both MPI- and thread-based parallelism. MCNPTools has been updated to handle the new HDF5 PTRAC format and is now open sourced on GitHub. Built-in capabilities, such as the pulse-height tally coincident capture special treatment, can largely be replicated through separate postprocessing scripts that leverage both PTRAC and MCNPTools. This allows for greater flexibility in user-specified and controlled detector response functionality, ultimately using the MCNP code for what it is best at (i.e., particle transport).

How can a diverse set of integral and semi-integral measurements inform identification of discrepant nuclear data? [Slides]

Importance of nuclear data to bias changed significantly when including diverse measurement sets. LLNL pulsed sphere measurements provided information for 9 Be nuclear data above 2 MeV and subcritical benchmarks provided information for 240 Pu nuclear data between 100 keV and 10 MeV. Pulsed sphere leakage spectra and neutron noise observables are differently sensitive to nuclear data compared to critical benchmarks. Leakage spectra are sensitive to nuclear data above 5 MeV. Count rate and Feynman Y are more sensitive to nuclear data. A change in bias can help evaluators identify discrepant nuclear data. In the future, EUCLID plans to perform RAFIEKI analysis with additional benchmark and measurement sets.

Open-source release of CGMF 1.1 and Integration into the MCNP6.3 ® Code [Slides]

As a result of a multi-year NA-22 project, CGMF was integrated into MCNP6.2 and publicly released. CGMF was open-sourced and publicly released and MCNP6.3 was updated to include the latest version and is in the process of being publicly released. Current and future plans include global optimization and uncertainty quantification within CGMF, model parameter fitting such that CGMF may be used in ENDF/B evaluations, and improving both standalone and MCNP-integrated CGM (non-fission) simulations.

Status of Shift for NCS Applications in SCALE 6.3 [Slides]

Shift can run most KENO V.a and KENO-VI inputs, but beware of small geometry fudge factors. Shift is faster than KENO for fast spectrum systems, but has a higher uncertainty per particle. KENO FoM is higher for thermal systems. KENO V.a in MG is significantly faster than KENO V.a in CE, so this may exacerbate Shift difference. Shift generally has greater speedup for parallel calculations. Shift has only IFP available for TSUNAMI-3D, but parallel calculations are enabled.

Multi-group Examination of Nickel-Reflected HEU System [Slides]

Researchers noted an unusually large bias for 8-in. nickel reflected HEU sphere in HMF-003 between the 252- group library and the CE library in SCALE 6.2.4. The bias was investigated by reviewing reactions that $k_{eff}$ is sensitive to using TSUNAMI and collecting reaction rate data using tools within SCALE. For this system, bias is primarily due to the elastic scattering in nickel. Researchers compared new multigroup structures in SCALE 6.3. For this system, reduction in CE-to-MG bias seen in the 302-group and further improved in the 1597-group structure. When researchers compared ENDF/B-VIII.0 in SCALE 6.3, library showed improved results with new nickel evaluation. However, the MG-to-CE bias can still be large as large biases can occur in any system. This example highlights the importance of validating results with measured systems.

Expansion of the ORNL VALID Library [Slides]

VALID continues as a library of high-quality models used for testing SCALE and nuclear data. Recent expansion of VALID was the largest impactful change in a decade. Adding 233 U experiments circa 2017 added more cases. There are a huge number of cases in the pipeline, but a lack of qualified staff and funding to complete reviews. Future plans should simplify the process and increase the availability of models and results for external users.

Whisper Results of a PuCl "Solution" System Using LLNL TEX Cl Benchmark Model

This data set is to be shared with the Nuclear Criticality Safety Division (NCSD) at LLNL as part of a TEX Cl experiment. NCSD at LLNL shared the experimental model with the Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Division at LANL for comparison with an MCNP model of a PuCl application system. The experimental model was used in conjunction with Whisper to see how including it would impact the baseline USL for the PuCl application.

VALID Past, Present, and Future [Slides]

This presentation discusses the Verified, Archived Library of Inputs and Data (VALID) procedure which is managed per computational procedure under the overall SCALE quality assurance plan. The principle behind VALID is that two independent, qualified people prepare and review the model, while a dual, independent check acts as a primary barrier to prevent errors in the library. A final check by VALID QAC of procedural compliance is then performed. The future for VALID includes plans to add more experiments, a review for all ICSBEP cases containing Deuterium, ZEUS intermediate and fast spectrum evaluations, intermediate enrichment experiments, other cases of interest to sponsors, and mixed/intermediate spectrum experiments.

Recent Testing of ENDF/B-VIII.0 at ORNL [Slides]

This presentation provides an overview of comparisons of ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 and uses VALID suite to test >600 cases with ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 in KENO V.a/KENO-VI, although a limited number of cases have been tested with TSUNAMI. It provides a results summary of KENO V.a/KENO-VI with a pooled results summary. The presentation also discusses changes for LCT experiments, MCT experiments, MST experiments, and PST experiments. A few words about graphite are also provided and the presentation states that graphite performance investigated across ENDF/B-VII.0, ENDF/B-VII.1, and ENDF/B-VIII.0 for MSR and HTGR models. A brief summary of the results is presented to make sure the Validation Committee is aware of the work. Also presented is an Eigenvalue comparison with a graphite moderated system, and comparison between an HTR-10 pebble model ENDF/B-VII.1 vs. ENDF/B-VIII.0, which provides different graphite data. In conclusion, ORNL has recently completed a comparison of ENDF/B-VIII.0 and ENDF/B-VII.1 using the VALID library. Work is also being performed for advanced reactor applications. Other efforts on-going and they are also trying to investigate more intermediate spectrum cases.

MCNP ® Code Version 6.3.0 Verification & Validation Testing

This report describes the verification and validation testing performed on MCNP ® code version 6.3.0. The purpose of this report is to act as a compendium of test suite descriptions and results. Accordingly the document is divided into two parts. Part I (this part) describes each test suite in the following sections. Part II provides the results of testing each suite and comparisons to experimental and/or alternative computational results, as appropriate.
