IUPAC-IUGS recommendation on the half-lives of 147 Sm and 146 Sm

In this paper, the IUPAC-IUGS joint Task Group “Isotopes in Geosciences” recommends a value of (106.25 ± 0.38) Ga for the half-life of 147 Sm, and a corresponding decay constant λ 147 = (6.524 ± 0.024) × 10 –12 a –1 , both with a coverage factor k = 2. For the extinct radionuclide 146 Sm two very different half-lives are used in the scientific community ( c . 68 and 103 Ma), to such a degree that no consensus value can be endorsed at present by the Task Group. Pending dedicated re-investigations it is recommended that papers using the 146 Sm decay to quantify the cosmo/geological evolution of (extra)terrestrial samples perform a twin set of calculations using both proposed half-lives.

The formation and evolution of the Moon’s crust inferred from the Sm-Nd isotopic systematics of highlands rocks

Ages determined for magnesian and ferroan anorthosite crustal rock suites overlap, suggesting they formed contemporaneously about 4.3–4.5 Ga. A notable exception is the Sm-Nd age previously determined on Mg-suite gabbronorite 67667 which is at least 100 Ma younger than the youngest ferroan anorthosite. New chronologic measurements of 67667 presented here yield concordant Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr mineral isochron ages of 4349 ± 31 Ma and 4368 ± 67 Ma, suggesting the sample is older than previous estimates. Furthermore, a whole rock Sm-Nd isochron of Mg-suite rocks from the Apollo 14, 15, 16, and 17 landing sites yields an age of 4348 ± 25 Ma, indicating that Mg-suite magmatism was widespread and roughly contemporaneous on the lunar nearside. Here, analysis of Sm-Nd internal isochron ages confirms that Mg-suite magmatism was restricted to a period between about 4.33 and 4.35 Ga at the Apollo 14, 15, 16, and 17 landing sites and was synchronous with magmatism at the Apollo 16 site associated with the ferroan anorthosite suite between 4.35 and 4.37 Ga. Magnesian- and ferroan anorthosite suite rocks with ages younger than ~4.33 Ga appear to have experienced slow cooling in the deep lunar interior, so that the ages record when the samples cooled below the closure temperature of the Sm-Nd isotopic system and not the time they crystallized.

Newberry Volcano magnetotelluric impedance data

This submission includes all magnetotelluric (MT) transfer functions acquired during the 2014 EGS stimulation at Newberry Volcano in central Oregon as well as previously acquired MT data for the overall volcano. Plots of all data are provided (including forward response from a model used in a publication now in review in G-cubed). Also included is a kmz file giving all station locations.

Pele: An Exascale-Ready Suite of Combustion Codes

High fidelity simulations of realistic combustion devices are extremely demanding computationally because of the requirements to capture complex fuel chemical decomposition, its intricate interactions with turbulent, often multiphase, flows, and the wide separation of space and time scales between the thin flame and the device boundaries. Software required to carry out such computations tends to be extremely complex, particularly when designed to exploit hardware accelerators, and can be difficult to port and maintain. We present Pele, a performance portable suite of tools for the simulation of combustion systems, including codes to evolve reactive multiphase configurations in the low Mach number and compressible flow regimes, along with a set of inter-compatible post processing and in situ analysis tools. The Pele suite of tools is built on top of the AMReX framework for block-structured adaptive mesh refinement, which provides efficient data structures and algorithms that enable the development of a wide variety of efficient mesh and particle based PDE integration schemes. A hierarchical MPI+X parallelism scheme supports CPU-only and accelerated architectures, where X can be OpenMP, CUDA, and HIP based approaches for intra-node computational work distribution. The algorithms and data structures underlying the Pele simulation and analysis tools are highly scalable and performant across a wide variety of high-performance computing platforms, including DOEs newest exascale-class machines, Frontier and Aurora. The simulation and analysis tools are fully documented and freely distributed as open source via GitHub. We present key algorithmic and software challenges, solution strategies, performance and resulting set of capabilities.
