Test Stand Functional Requirements for Testing MQXFA Magnets and Q1/Q3 Cryostat Assemblies (Rev.3)

This document specifies test stand requirements for testing the High Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC, or HiLumi LHC) MQXFA magnets and LQXFA/B cryostat assemblies. Total of 12 (3 pre-series, 7 series production and 2 re-work) of these cryostat assemblies are expected to be fabricated and delivered to CERN by the U.S. HL-LHC Accelerator Upgrade Project (US HL-LHC AUP) as part of the U.S. contributions to the LHC High Luminosity Upgrade. These cryostat assemblies are the quadrupole magnetic components of the HL-LHC Q1 (LQXFA) and Q3 (LQXFB) inner triplet optical elements in front of the interactions points 1 (ATLAS) and 5 (CMS). One LMQXFA cold mass is installed in each cryostat assembly and each cold mass consists of two MQXFA quadrupole magnets. MQXFA, LMQXFA and LQXFA/B functional requirements are specified in [1,2,3].MQXFA magnets will be tested at BNL Vertical Magnet Test Facility (VMTF) and 12 cryostat assembly tests planned at Fermilab’s Horizontal Magnet Test Facility (HMTF). This document specifies the test stand functional requirements for testing MQXFA magnets and LQXFA/B cryostat assemblies.

Differential cross section measurements for the production of top quark pairs and of additional jets using dilepton events from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

Differential cross sections for top quark pair ($\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using a sample of events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The data were recorded with the CMS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The differential cross sections are measured as functions of kinematic observables of the $\textrm{t}\overline{\textrm{t}}$ system, the top quark and antiquark and their decay products, as well as of the number of additional jets in the event. The results are presented as functions of up to three variables and are corrected to the parton and particle levels. When compared to standard model predictions based on quantum chromodynamics at different levels of accuracy, it is found that the calculations do not always describe the observed data. The deviations are found to be largest for the multi-differential cross sections.

Measurement of the inclusive and differential Higgs boson production cross sections in the leptonic WW decay mode at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

Measurements of the fiducial inclusive and differential production cross sections of the Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV are performed using events where the Higgs boson decays into a pair of W bosons that subsequently decay into a final state with an electron, a muon, and a pair of neutrinos. The analysis is based on data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$. Production cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum of the Higgs boson and the associated jet multiplicity. The Higgs boson signal is extracted and simultaneously unfolded to correct for selection efficiency and resolution effects using maximum-likelihood fits to the observed distributions in data. The integrated fiducial cross section is measured to be 86.5 ± 9.5 fb, consistent with the Standard Model expectation of 82.5 ± 4.2 fb. No significant deviation from the Standard Model expectations is observed in the differential measurements.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurement of charged particle multiplicity distributions in DIS at HERA and its implication to entanglement entropy of partons

Charged particle multiplicity distributions in positron-proton deep inelastic scattering at a centre-of-mass energy √s = 319 GeV are measured. The data are collected with the H1 detector at HERA corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 136 pb -1 . Charged particle multiplicities are measured as a function of photon virtuality Q 2 , inelasticity y and pseudorapidity η in the laboratory and the hadronic centre-of-mass frames. Predictions from different Monte Carlo models are compared to the data. The first and second moments of the multiplicity distributions are determined and the KNO scaling behaviour is investigated. The multiplicity distributions as a function of Q 2 and the Bjorken variable x bj are converted to the hadron entropy S hadron , and predictions from a quantum entanglement model are tested.

Investigation into the event-activity dependence of $\Upsilon$(nS) relative production in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 TeV

The ratios of the production cross sections between the excited ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons and the ϒ(1S) ground state, detected via their decay into two muons, are studied as a function of the number of charged particles in the event. The data are from proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb$^{−1}$, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Evidence of a decrease in these ratios as a function of the particle multiplicity is observed, more pronounced at low transverse momentum $ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\upmu \upmu} $. For ϒ(nS) mesons with $ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\upmu \upmu} $> 7 GeV, where most of the data were collected, the correlation with multiplicity is studied as a function of the underlying event transverse sphericity and the number of particles in a cone around the ϒ(nS) direction. The ratios are found to be multiplicity independent for jet-like events. The mean $ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\upmu \upmu} $ values for the ϒ(nS) states as a function of particle multiplicity are also measured and found to grow more steeply as their mass increases.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Measurement of $\mathrm{t\bar t}$ normalised multi-differential cross sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt s=13$ TeV, and simultaneous determination of the strong coupling strength, top quark pole mass, and parton distribution functions

Normalised multi-differential cross sections for top quark pair ($\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$) production are measured in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV using events containing two oppositely charged leptons. The analysed data were recorded with the CMS detector in 2016 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The double-differential $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the top quark and of the $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ system at parton level in the full phase space. A triple-differential measurement is performed as a function of the invariant mass and rapidity of the $\mathrm{t\overline{t}}$ system and the multiplicity of additional jets at particle level. The data are compared to predictions of Monte Carlo event generators that complement next-to-leading-order (NLO) quantum chromodynamics (QCD) calculations with parton showers. Together with a fixed-order NLO QCD calculation, the triple-differential measurement is used to extract values of the strong coupling strength $\alpha_S$ and the top quark pole mass ($m_\mathrm{T}^\text{pole}$) using several sets of parton distribution functions (PDFs). Furthermore, a simultaneous fit of the PDFs, $\alpha_S$, and $m_\mathrm{T}^\text{pole}$ is performed at NLO, demonstrating that the new data have significant impact on the gluon PDF, and at the same time allow an accurate determination of $\alpha_S$ and $m_\mathrm{T}^\text{pole}$.

Measurement of differential $ b\overline{b} $- and $ c\overline{c} $-dijet cross-sections in the forward region of pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV

The inclusive \( b\overline{b} \) - and \( c\overline{c} \) -dijet production cross-sections in the forward region of pp collisions are measured using a data sample collected with the LHCb detector at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV in 2016. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.6 fb - 1 . Differential cross-sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum and of the pseudorapidity of the leading jet, of the rapidity difference between the jets, and of the dijet invariant mass. A fiducial region for the measurement is defined by requiring that the two jets originating from the two b or c quarks are emitted with transverse momentum greater than 20 GeV/ c , pseudorapidity in the range 2 . 2 < η < 4 . 2, and with a difference in the azimuthal angle between the two jets greater than 1.5. The integrated \( b\overline{b} \) -dijet cross-section is measured to be 53 . 0 ± 9 . 7 nb, and the total \( c\overline{c} \) -dijet cross-section is measured to be 73 ± 16 nb. The ratio between \( c\overline{c} \) - and \( b\overline{b} \) -dijet cross-sections is also measured and found to be 1 . 37 ± 0 . 27. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions at next-to-leading order.

Model-independent measurement of the Higgs boson associated production with two jets and decaying to a pair of W bosons in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A model-independent measurement of the differential production cross section of the Higgs boson decaying into a pair of W bosons, with a final state including two jets produced in association, is presented. In the analysis, events are selected in which the decay products of the two W bosons consist of an electron, a muon, and missing transverse momentum. The model independence of the measurement is maximized by employing a discriminating variable, developed through machine learning, that is agnostic to the signal hypothesis. The analysis is based on proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV collected with the CMS detector from 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb −1 . The production cross section is measured as a function of the difference in azimuthal angle between the two jets. The differential cross section measurements are used to constrain Higgs boson couplings within the standard model effective field theory framework.

Measurement of differential cross sections for the production of a Z boson in association with jets in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV

A measurement is presented of the production of Z bosons that decay into two electrons or muons in association with jets, in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data were recorded by the CMS Collaboration at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb$^{-1}$. The differential cross sections are measured as a function of the transverse momentum ($p_\mathrm{T}$) of the Z boson and the transverse momentum and rapidities of the five jets with largest $p_\mathrm{T}$. The jet multiplicity distribution is measured for up to eight jets. The hadronic activity in the events is estimated using the scalar sum of the $p_\mathrm{T}$ of all the jets. All measurements are unfolded to the stable particle-level and compared with predictions from various Monte Carlo event generators, as well as with expectations at leading and next-to-leading orders in perturbative quantum chromodynamics.

Measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable in deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering at HERA

The H1 Collaboration reports the first measurement of the 1-jettiness event shape observable $τ^b_1$ in neutral-current deep-inelastic electron-proton scattering (DIS). The observable $τ^b_1$ is equivalent to a thrust observable defined in the Breit frame. The data sample was collected at the HERA ep collider in the years 2003–2007 with center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 319 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 351.1 pb -1 . Triple differential cross sections are provided as a function of $τ^b_1$, event virtuality $Q^2$, and inelasticity y, in the kinematic region $Q^2$ > 150 GeV 2 . Single differential cross section are provided as a function of $τ^b_1$ in a limited kinematic range. Double differential cross sections are measured, in contrast, integrated over $τ^b_1$ and represent the inclusive neutral-current DIS cross section measured as a function of $Q^2$ and y. The data are compared to a variety of predictions and include classical and modern Monte Carlo event generators, predictions in fixed-order perturbative QCD where calculations up to $\mathcal{O}$($α^3_s$) are available for $τ^b_1$ or inclusive DIS, and resummed predictions at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy matched to fixed order predictions at $\mathcal{O}$($α^2_s$). These comparisons reveal sensitivity of the 1-jettiness observable to QCD parton shower and resummation effects, as well as the modeling of hadronization and fragmentation. Within their range of validity, the fixed-order predictions provide a good description of the data. Monte Carlo event generators are predictive over the full measured range and hence their underlying models and parameters can be constrained by comparing to the presented data.

Search for dijet resonances with data scouting in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search is presented for narrow resonances, with a mass between 0.6 and 1.8 TeV, decaying to pairs of jets, in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. The search is performed using dijets that are reconstructed, selected, and recorded in a compact form by the high-level trigger in a technique referred to as “data scouting”, from data collected in 2016–2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 fb −1 . The dijet mass spectra are well described by a smooth parameterization, and no significant evidence for the production of new particles is observed. Model-independent upper limits are presented on the product of the cross section, branching fraction, and acceptance for the individual cases of narrow quark-quark, quark-gluon, and gluon-gluon resonances, and are compared to the predictions from a variety of models of narrow dijet resonance production. The upper limit on the coupling of a dark matter mediator to quarks is presented as a function of the mediator mass. The sensitivity of this search goes beyond what is expected from statistical scaling with the integrated luminosity alone, as a consequence of the use of fewer parameters in the background function within a more robust statistical procedure.

Measurement of W±-boson differential cross-sections in proton–proton collisions with low pile-up data at s=5.02 TeV and 13TeV with the ATLAS detector

High precision single-differential W±$$W^\pm $$-boson production cross-sections as a function of electron or muon transverse momentum pT$$p_\textrm{T}$$ or their pseudorapity η$$\eta $$, as well as double-differential cross-sections as functions of these variables, are measured in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies s=5.02$$\sqrt{s}=5.02$$ TeV and 13 TeV. The W-boson charge asymmetry as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ is also measured. The data, collected in dedicated runs at reduced instantaneous luminosity with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, correspond to integrated luminosities of 255 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 5.02 TeV and 338 pb-1$$^{-1}$$ at 13 TeV. The measurements are in agreement with Standard-Model predictions calculated at next-to-next-to-leading-order in the strong coupling constant αs$$\alpha _s$$ including transverse-momentum resummation at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy using several parton distribution functions. The impact of the measured differential cross-sections as a function of lepton η$$\eta $$ on the determination of these functions is studied using a profiling technique.

Multiplicity functions of quasars: predictions from the MassiveBlackII simulation

ABSTRACT We examine multiple active galactic nucleus (AGN) systems (triples and quadruples, in particular) in the MassiveBlackII simulation over a redshift range of 0.06 ≲ z ≲ 4. We identify AGN systems (with bolometric luminosity $L_{\mathrm{bol}}\gt 10^{42}~\mathrm{erg\, s}^{-1}$) at different scales (defined by the maximum distance between member AGNs) to determine the AGN multiplicity functions. This is defined as the volume/surface density of AGN systems per unit richness R, the number of AGNs in a system. We find that gravitationally bound multiple AGN systems tend to populate scales of ${\lesssim}0.7~\mathrm{cMpc}\, h^{-1}$; this corresponds to angular separations of ≲100 arcsec and a line-of-sight velocity difference ${\lesssim}200~\mathrm{km\, s}^{-1}$. The simulation contains ∼10 and ∼100 triples/quadruples per deg2 up to depths of DESI (g ≲ 24) and LSST (g ≲ 26) imaging, respectively; at least $20{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of these should be detectable in spectroscopic surveys. The simulated quasar ($L_{\mathrm{bol}}\gt 10^{44}~\mathrm{erg\, s}^{-1}$) triples and quadruples predominantly exist at 1.5 ≲ z ≲ 3. Their members have black hole masses $10^{6.5}\lesssim M_{\mathrm{ bh}}\lesssim 10^{9}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\, h^{-1}$ and live in separate (one central and multiple satellite) galaxies with stellar masses $10^{10}\lesssim M_{*}\lesssim 10^{12}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\, h^{-1}$. They live in the most massive haloes (e.g. ${\sim}10^{13}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\, h^{-1}$ at z = 2.5; ${\sim}10^{14}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot }\, h^{-1}$ at z = 1) in the simulation. Their detections provide an exciting prospect for understanding massive black hole growth and their merger rates in galaxies in the era of multimessenger astronomy.

Photon-odderon interference in exclusive χ c charmonium production at the Electron-Ion Collider

Exclusive C = + 1 scalar, axial-vector, and tensor quarkonium production in high-energy electron-proton scattering requires a C -odd t -channel exchange of a photon or a three-gluon ladder. We derive the expressions for the corresponding amplitudes. The relative phase of the photon vs three-gluon exchange amplitudes is determined by the sign of the light-front matrix element of the eikonal color current operator d a b c J + a J + b J + c at moderate x , and is not affected by small- x QCD evolution. Model calculations predict constructive interference, which is particularly strong for momentum transfer | t | ∼ 1 GeV 2 where the cross section for χ c J production exceeds that for pure photon exchange by up to a factor of 4. Exclusive χ c J electroproduction at the high luminosity Electron-Ion Collider occurs with well measurable rates and measurements of these processes should find evidence for the perturbative odderon exchange. We also compute the total electroproduction cross section as a function of energy and provide first estimates of the number of χ c J events per month at the Electron-Ion Collider design luminosity. Measurement of the differential $\hbox {t}\overline{\hbox {t}}$ production cross section as a function of the jet mass and extraction of the top quark mass in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks

A measurement of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of Lorentz-boosted top quarks is presented. The measurement is performed in the lepton + jets channel of top quark pair production ($\hbox {t}\overline{\hbox {t}}$) events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay are reconstructed using a single large-radius jet with transverse momentum greater than 400 GeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collisions and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The differential $\hbox {t}\overline{\hbox {t}}$ production cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded to the particle level and is used to extract the top quark mass. The jet mass scale is calibrated using the hadronic W boson decay within the large-radius jet. The uncertainties in the modelling of the final state radiation are reduced by studying angular correlations in the jet substructure. These developments lead to a significant increase in precision, and a top quark mass of 173.06 ± 0.84 GeV.

Measurement of prompt charged-particle production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The data sample, collected with an unbiased trigger, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 nb -1 . The differential cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum and pseudorapidity in the ranges $p_T$ ∋ [80, 10 000) MeV/c and η ∋ [2.0, 4.8) and is determined separately for positively and negatively charged particles. The results are compared with predictions from various hadronic-interaction models.

EIC Transverse emittance growth due to crab cavity RF noise: Estimates and mitigation

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) requires crab cavities to compensate for a 25 mrad crossing angle and achieve maximum luminosity. The crab cavity Radio Frequency (RF) system will inject low levels of noise to the crabbing field, generating transverse emittance growth and potentially limiting luminosity lifetime. In this work, we estimate the transverse emittance growth rate as a function of the Crab Cavity RF noise and quantify RF noise specifications for reasonable performance. Finally, we evaluate the possible mitigation of the RF noise induced emittance growth via a dedicated feedback system.

Astrophysics & cosmology from line intensity mapping vs galaxy surveys

Line intensity mapping (LIM) proposes to efficiently observe distant faint galaxies and map the matter density field at high redshift. Building upon the formalism in a companion paper, we first highlight the degeneracies between cosmology and astrophysics in LIM. We discuss what can be constrained from measurements of the mean intensity and redshift-space power spectra. With a sufficient spectral resolution, the large-scale redshift-space distortions of the 2-halo term can be measured, helping to break the degeneracy between bias and mean intensity. With a higher spectral resolution, measuring the small-scale redshift-space distortions disentangles the 1-halo and shot noise terms. Additionally, cross-correlations with external galaxy catalogs or lensing surveys further break degeneracies. We derive requirements for experiments similar to SPHEREx, HETDEX, CDIM, COMAP and CONCERTO. We then revisit the question of the optimality of the LIM observables, compared to galaxy detection, for astrophysics and cosmology. We use a matched filter to compute the luminosity detection threshold for individual sources. We show that LIM contains information about galaxies too faint to detect, in the high-noise or high-confusion regimes. We quantify the sparsity and clustering bias of the detected sources and compare them to LIM, showing in which cases LIM is a better tracer of the matter density. We extend previous work by answering these questions as a function of Fourier scale, including for the first time the effect of cosmic variance, pixel-to-pixel correlations, luminosity-dependent clustering bias and redshift-space distortions.
