Enabling Production of Low Carbon Emissions Steel through CO 2 Capture from Blast Furnace Gases at Cleveland Cliffs’ 5 mtpa Steel Plant at Burns Harbor, Indiana

Dastur International Inc. has prepared a DOE-funded Pre-front-end engineering design (Pre-FEED) study to capture up to 2.8 mtpa of CO 2 from the available Blast Furnace (BF) gases at the Burns Harbor steel plant operated by Cleveland Cliffs in Burns Harbor, Indiana. The project consists of an amine solvent based pre-combustion carbon capture system, along with a unique BF gas conditioning process which significantly optimizes the project design and architecture in terms of higher volumes (2.8 mtpa vis-à-vis 1.6 mtpa without conditioning) & concentration (32 vol% in conditioned gas vs. 22% in raw BF gas) of CO 2 , which can be captured using a single train, resulting in reduced size and capital cost of the CO 2 capture island, and improved overall economics on a $\$$/tCO 2 captured basis.

Waste-to-Energy (WTE)-derived Low-Carbon-Footprint Concrete (LCFC)

The construction industry is estimated to generate around 600 million tons of concrete and demolition waste annually in the US. In comparison, Waste-To-Energy (WTE) plants generate about 6.6 million tons of ash from the combustion of municipal solid waste.1–4 Research has been ongoing for decades to upcycle WTE-ash and C&D waste.

High-Efficiency Low-Carbon Fuel Flexible Burner for Steel Industry

GTI Energy, with Bloom Engineering, Argonne National Laboratory and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, are developing the FlexGen-H burner. This high-efficiency burner can achieve 45•100% CO2e emissions reduction using green hydrogen with natural gas. It offers NOx, CO emissions ?50 ppm (3% O2), 15•51% fuel savings, ?50% PM2.5 reduction with turndown of ?5:1. The technology can work with renewable liquid fuels, ethanol or methanol. The technology aims to significantly reduce emissions, enhance resiliency, improve process efficiency. The paper will discuss preliminary results of development, with planned laboratory validation including safety, CFD, burner system design and market for the technology.

Manufacture of low carbon astroloy turbine disk shapes by hot isostatic pressing. Volume 2, project 1

The performance of a hot isotatic pressed disk installed in an experimental engine and exposed to realistic operating conditions in a 150-hour engine test and a 1000 cycle endurance test is documented. Post test analysis, based on visual, fluorescent penetrant and dimensional inspection, revealed no defects in the disk and indicated that the disk performed satisfactorily.

Least-Cost Storage Mix for Low-Carbon Operations

As communities plan for high- or ultrahigh-renewable power systems, they face diverse options for energy storage. Each energy storage technology has a unique power capacity and discharge duration, and each community has a unique load, generation mix, and weather pattern. Determining the optimal storage portfolio across these parameters could save planners significant costs when building out high-renewable power systems.
