Massive neutrinos and interacting dark matter look alike through the lens of lensing

Here, we demonstrate that the suppression in the lensing power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) caused by massive neutrinos can be mimicked by dark matter-baryon interactions at the precision of next-generation CMB experiments. Thus, a determination of neutrino masses from the CMB lensing power spectrum may be compromised. We illustrate the degeneracy for a dark matter-proton cross section ∝ $v$ –4 , which arises in the t-channel exchange of an ultralight mediator in the nonrelativistic limit.

Balancing Participation and Speed: A Polycentric Governance Lens on Renewable‐Energy Siting

Siting and permitting for renewable projects vary in process and authority structures. Such variation can create coordination challenges and inconsistent public participation processes. We develop a Governance Trade-Off Matrix to classify permitting processes by (1) authority structure (polycentric vs. monocentric) and (2) procedural extensiveness (minimal vs. extensive). The matrix shows when jurisdictional dispersion enables timely implementation and when it creates coordination breakdowns. We propose testable hypotheses on how governance design affects project timelines, conflict escalation, and local acceptance. Here, the framework highlights design levers, like single lead agencies, structured public involvement, and statutory shot clocks, to reconcile meaningful local input with urgent climate imperatives.

Through the lens of bioenergy crops: advances, bottlenecks, and promises of plant engineering

Advances in engineering of bioenergy crops were driven over the past years by adapting technological breakthroughs and accelerating conventional applications but also exposed intriguing challenges. New tools revealed rich interconnectivity in the exponentially growing and dynamic 'big' omics data' of metabolomes, transcriptomes, and genomes at previously inaccessible magnitude (global, cross-species, meta-) and resolution (single cell). Insights enabled fresh hypotheses and stimulated disciplines such as functional genomics with discovery of broad regulatory networks and their determinants, that is, DNA parts, including promoters, regulatory elements, and transcription factors. Their rational design, assembly into increasingly complex blueprints, and installation into diverse chassis is an existing frontier that may benefit from emerging technologies to address bottlenecks. Interweaving nature-inspired to fully synthetic parts has already allowed building of fine-tuned regulatory circuits, or new-to-nature metabolic routes insulated from the biological context of the chassis species. Similarly, developments and the evolving need for unifying principles in plant transformation and species-agnostic technologies highlight future opportunities for engineering the next generation of bioenergy plants.

Nonlinear dynamics of proton beams with hollow electron lens in the CERN high-luminosity LHC

The design stored beam energy in the CERN high-luminosity large hadron collider (HL-LHC) upgrade is about 700 MJ, with about 36 MJ in the beam tails, according to estimates based on scaling considerations from measurements at the LHC. Such a large amount of stored energy in the beam tails poses serious challenges on its control and safe disposal. In particular, orbit jitters can cause significant losses on primary collimators, which can lead to accidental beam dumps, magnet quenches, or even permanent damage to collimators and other accelerator elements. Thus, active control of the diffusion speed of halo particles is necessary and the use of hollow electron lenses (HELs) represents the most promising approach to handle overpopulated tails at the HL-LHC. HEL is a very powerful and advanced tool that can be used for controlled depletion of beam tails, thus enhancing the performance of beam halo collimation. For these reasons, HELs have been recently included in the HL-LHC baseline. In this paper, we present detailed beam dynamics calculations performed with the goal of defining HEL specifications and operational scenarios for HL-LHC. The prospects for effective halo control in HL-LHC are presented.
