Laser system detects tower deflections

Continuously measure and record deflection of facility during testing. Facility deflections are then subtracted from shroud deflections during data reduction on computer. System is based on tracking light beam by using two-axis photo detector and feeding signals into X and Y servo system.

HgCdTe photodiodes for CO2 laser systems

A recently developed long-wave infrared detector, the photovoltaic HgCdTe, has many advantages which may solve some of the system problems that have impeded the development of carbon dioxide systems. The detectors are available for operation in the temperature range from 77 K to 146 K. Noise problems inherent in a number of conventional detection techniques can be overcome by a suitably implemented optical heterodyne method. Aspects of heterodyne detector development are discussed along with questions concerning the HgCdTe photodiodes which are available.

Exposure damage mechanisms for KCl windows in high power laser systems

An experimental study of the 10.6 micrometer and 0.6328 micrometer optical properties of single crystal and europium doped polycrystal is described. Significant variations in the optical properties are observed over periods of exposure up to 100 hours. Models are proposed to predict the 10.6 micrometer absorptivity for long exposure periods. Mechanical creep has been detected in both materials at high temperature.

Atmospheric effects on coherent laser systems

Effects of the truncation of the gaussian beam by the telescope on the signal to noise ratio were studied. Finite and infinite beams were also considered, along with the refractive index structure constant.

Analyze satellite-tracking laser data in order to study satellite ephemerides, solid-Earth and ocean tides and laser system performance

The decrease in the semimajor axis of Lageos is considerably larger than expected. Gravitational effects, reference system effects, solar radiation pressure, Earth albedo pressure, neutral atmospheric drag, the Poynting Robertson Effect, and electrodynamic effects were used in explaining the observations. Quick look data provided are used to determine the Earth's polar motion and length of day. This process is routine, and provides these geophysical data every five days.

NASA Lewis 8- by 6-foot supersonic wind tunnel user manual

The 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel (SWT) at Lewis Research Center is available for use by qualified researchers. This manual contains tunnel performance maps which show the range of total temperature, total pressure, static pressure, dynamic pressure, altitude, Reynolds number, and mass flow as a function of test section Mach number. These maps are applicable for both the aerodynamic and propulsion cycle. The 8- by 6-Foot Supersonic Wind Tunnel is an atmospheric facility with a test section Mach number range from 0.36 to 2.0. General support systems (air systems, hydraulic system, hydrogen system, infrared system, laser system, laser sheet system, and schlieren system are also described as are instrumentation and data processing and acquisition systems. Pretest meeting formats are outlined. Tunnel user responsibility and personal safety requirements are also stated.

A prospectus on airborne laser mapping systems

Airborne laser systems have demonstrated enormous potential for topographic and bathymetric mapping. Both profiling and scanning systems have been evaluated for terrain elevation mapping, stream valley cross-section determination, and nearshore bottom profiling. Performance of the laser systems has been impressive and for some applications matches current operational accuracy requirements. Determining the position of individual laser measurements remains a constraint for most applications. Laser technology constrains some terrain and bathymetric applications, particularly for water penetration and frequency of measurements for high-spatial resolution over large areas.

Satellite Power Systems (SPS) laser studies. Volume 1: Laser environmental impact study

The environmental impact of space to Earth power transmission using space borne laser subsystems is emphasized. A laser system is defined, estimates of relevant efficiencies for laser power generation and atmospheric transmission are developed, and a comparison is made to a microwave system. Ancillary issues, such as laser beam spreading, safety and security, mass and volume estimates and technology growth are considered.

Laser interferometer micrometer system

Laser micrometer measures dimensions of precision gyro and gas bearing parts using the principle of measuring light phase changes rather than a direct fringe count. The system uses light beams to eliminate errors due to deformations and surface irregularities, and three interferometers.

Remote measurement utilizing NASA's scanning laser Doppler systems. Volume 1. Laser Doppler wake vortex tracking at Kennedy Airport

Test operations of the Scanning Laser Doppler System (SLDS) at Kennedy International Airport (KIA) during August 1974 through June 1975 are reported. A total of 1,619 data runs was recorded with a totally operational system during normal landing operations at KIA. In addition, 53 data runs were made during cooperative flybys with the C880 for a grand total of 1672 recorded vortex tracks. Test crews were in attendance at KIA for 31 weeks, of which 25 weeks were considered operational and the other six were packing, unpacking, setup and check out. Although average activity equates to 67 recorded landing operations per week, two periods of complete runway inactivity spanned 20 days and 13 days, respectively. The operation frequency therefore averaged about 88 operations per week.

Laser Links for Instrumentation Systems

Laser Links eliminate costly cables connecting sensors to data-collection centers. Data-transmission scheme uses laser-based communication systems instead of cables. Sensor data transmitted by semiconductor-diode lasers effective over line-of-sight distances of up to several hundred meters. Use of lasers instead of cables simplifies number of installations.

A laser-powered flight transportation system

Laser energy transmitted from a solar-power satellite via a set of relay satellites is used to power a cruising air transport; i.e., a laser-powered airplane. The result is a nearly fuelless pollution-free flight transportation system which is cost competitive with the fuel-conservative airplane of the future. The major components of this flight system include a laser-power satellite, relay satellites, laser-powered turbofans, and a conventional airframe. The relay satellites are orbiting optical systems which intercept the beam from a power satellite and refocus and redirect the beam to its next target.
