AGR-5/6/7 Thermal Model with Non-uniform Gas Gaps

The daily as-run thermal analysis for the Advanced Gas Reactor (AGR)-5/6/7 experiment was documented in ECAR-5633 (Hawkes 2021). A finite element model was created for the entire test train, which consisted of five capsules. The fuel compacts, graphite holders, stainless-steel capsule walls, and all other major components were individually modeled, including all thermocouples (TCs). Daily heat rates for each compact and component in the model were input from daily as-run physics analyses. Daily gas compositions for each capsule were also input. The thermal conductivity of the compacts and graphite holders varied with fast neutron fluence. Gas mixture thermal conductivity was implemented using experimentally attained values from the literature. Fluence and temperature-dependent thermal conductivity was used for the graphite components and the fuel compacts. Radiation heat transfer was implemented. The model was tuned in an attempt to match the TC readings during the first cycle by adjusting the Neolube (graphite lubricant) thickness.

Results of a preliminary experimental investigation of a vapor transport fuel pin

In-Pile experimental tests were conducted on two fuel pins mounted side-by-side in a holder assembly. The fuel pins consisted of stacked fully enriched UO2 pellets enclosed in a type 316 stainless steel clad 1/2 inch outside diameter and 3 inches in length. Each fuel pin contained four pellets for a total of 22 grams of fuel weight. The experiment was operated to maintain the maximum clad temperature at 395 K corresponding to a fuel temperature at the central void surface of 2350 K. Total primary coolant water flow past the pin holder was calculated to be 110 gallons per minute. Forty-four gallons per minute at a velocity of 36.5 feet per second flowed around each fuel pin. Calculations indicated the maximum heat flux was at the point of the highest temperature and was equal to 0.24 kW/sq cm or 7.62 Btu/hr sq ft. A series of high resolution neutron radiographs of the nuclear fueled vapor transport capsule was taken. The thermal neutrons emitted from the core of the 60 megawatt Plum Brook reactor facility were used.

The effect of turbulence on pollutant formation in a tubular burner

The role of turbulence in pollutant formation was investigated both experimentally and analytically with the objective of understanding the important mechanisms of a fairly basic level. Preliminary measurements of the cold-flow turbulence characteristics downstream of three perforated plate flame holders, of varying solidity ratio, were made. In the combustion experiment, measurements of the concentration distributions of CO, NO(x), HC, and CO2, downstream of the same flame holders, were made. The combustor configuration was tubular and constant-area, and the fuel was premixed, prevaporized propane. The experimental results were modeled by a one-dimensional analysis in which transport phenomena were neglected, and more successfully, by a quasi-one-dimensional analysis containing recirculation zones and turbulent transport effects.

Combustion intensity and distribution relation to noise generation

Experiments with several different flame holder geometries were conducted to investigate the degree to which combustion roughness can be altered by altering the flame intensity and flame distribution in a ducted combustion system. The effect of admitting primary air through a plane-slotted or a slotted-swirl vane flame holder was compared and the combustion roughness and noise was contrasted with that obtained with a closed front-end perforated can. The slotted front-end burners produced much smoother burning and less noise than the closed front-end can. No advantage was apparent with swirl vs nonswirl when approximately the same inlet flow distribution was maintained. Preheated inlet air provided somewhat smoother combustion as compared with ambient temperature air. The combustion roughness with methyl alcohol was briefly compared with that of isooctane; indications are that it burns more smoothly, but more detailed studies are needed to substantiate these indications.

Solid state electro-optic color filter and iris

The electro-optic properties of lanthanum-modified lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) ferroelectric ceramic material are evaluated when utilized as a variable density and/or spectral filter in conjunction with a television scanning system. Emphasis was placed on the development of techniques and procedures for processing the PLZT disks and for applying efficient electrode structures. A number of samples were processed using different combinations of cleaning, electrode material, and deposition process. Best overall performance resulted from the direct evaporation of gold over chrome electrodes. A ruggedized mounting holder assembly was designed, fabricated, and tested. The assembly provides electrical contacts, high voltage protection, and support for the fragile PLZT disk, and permits mounting and optical alignment of the associated polarizers. Operational measurements of a PLZT sample mounted in the holder assembly were performed in conjunction with a television camera and the associated drive circuits. The data verified achievement of the elimination of the observed white-line effect.

Shuttle Spacelab Core Equipment Freezer

This paper describes the preliminary design of a Shuttle Spacelab Core Equipment Freezer. The unit will provide the capability to freeze and store many experiment specimens. Two models of the unit are planned. One model provides storage at -70 C; the other model will provide -70 C storage, a freeze dry capability, storage at a selectable temperature in the range of 0 C to -70 C, and means of maintaining close temperature tolerances. In addition an exchanger loop will be available at 4 C for cooling of a centrifuge and a remote storage compartment. A test tube holder, a dish holder and thermal capacitors for rapid freezing of large specimens will also be provided. A Stirling Cycle was selected as the active refrigerator for minimum cost and weight.

Temperature dependence of Fe/++/ crystal field spectra - Implications to mineralogical mapping of planetary surfaces

Results are reported of Fe(++) crystal field spectral measurements for olivines and pyroxenes up to 400 C. The results are correlated with crystal structure data at elevated temperatures, and the validity of remote-sensed identifications of minerals on hot surfaces of the moon and Mercury is assessed. Two techniques were used to obtain spectra of minerals at elevated temperatures using a spectrophotometer. One employed a diamond cell assembly or a specially designed sample holder to measure polarized absorption spectra of heated single crystals. For the other technique, a sample holder was designed to attach to a diffuse reflectance accessory to produce reflectance spectra of heated powdered samples. Polarized absorption spectra of forsterite at 20-400 C are shown in a graph. Other graphs show the temperature dependence of Fe(++) crystal field bands in olivines, the diffuse reflectance spectra of olivine at 40-400 C, the polarization absorption spectra of orthopyroxene at 30-400 C, the diffuse reflectance spectra of pigeonite at 40-400 C, and unpolarized absorption spectra of lunar pyroxene from Apollo 15 rock 15058.

Computational analysis of scramjet dual mode operation

One critical element in the design of a Scramjet is the detailed understanding of the complex flow field in the engine during various phases of operation. One area of interest is the computation of chemically reacting flows in the vicinity of flame holders. The characteristics of a method for solving the Navier-Stokes equations with chemical reactions are proposed. Also of interest are the flame holding characteristics of simple ramp and rearward facing steps. Both of these configurations are considered candidates for Scramjet flame holders.

Effects of specimen preparation on the electromagnetic property measurements of solid materials with an automatic network analyzer

Effects of specimen preparation on measured values of an acrylic's electomagnetic properties at X-band microwave frequencies, TE sub 1,0 mode, utilizing an automatic network analyzer have been studied. For 1 percent or less error, a gap between the specimen edge and the 0.901-in. wall of the specimen holder was the most significant parameter. The gap had to be less than 0.002 in. The thickness variation and alignment errors in the direction parallel to the 0.901-in. wall were equally second most significant and had to be less than 1 degree. Errors in the measurement f the thickness were third most significant. They had to be less than 3 percent. The following parameters caused errors of 1 percent or less: ratios of specimen-holder thicknesses of more than 15 percent, gaps between the specimen edge and the 0.401-in. wall less than 0.045 in., position errors less than 15 percent, surface roughness, hickness variation in the direction parallel to the 0.401-in. wall less than 35 percent, and specimen alignment in the direction parallel to the 0.401-in. wall mass than 5 degrees.
