Planimetric shapes of lunar rilles, part Q

Selected Apollo 16 photographs of lunar rilles have been analyzed with a new technique that includes a finite Fourier analysis. Preliminary results suggest that it will be possible to classify rilles quantitatively by their planimetric shape. Shapes of possible terrestrial analogs for lunar rilles also can be compared to the shapes of lunar rilles by using this new technique. Preliminary results also suggest that the new technique may be useful for demonstrating structural control of shape of lunar rilles.

Martian centre of mass - Centre of figure offset.

A Fourier analysis of Martian radar topographic data is carried out to determine the magnitude and direction of the center-of-mass/center-of-figure offset of Mars. A value of about 1 km is obtained for the figure offset with respect to the center of mass in the general direction of Tharsis. It is noted that figure offsets of comparable magnitudes exist in the earth and the moon.

Evaluation of ERTS-1 image sensor spatial resolution in photographic form

The author has identified the following significant results. The digital Optical Transfer Function (OTF) measurements showed the following: (1) there are no significant differences in optical performance, in terms of OTF, among all four bands of the multispectral scanner, (2) no substantial changes in the OTF's of bands 4, 5, and 6 during the period November 1972 to May 1973, and (3) comparison between the photographic and digital (CCT) two-dimensional OTF's indicated a strong asymmetry in the photographic product OTF between the MSS scan direction and across scan direction. The coherent light Fourier analysis program showed the following: (1) for agricultural areas, bands 5 and 7 of the MSS are superior in terms of image definition, and therefore mapping and acreage estimation, (2) amplitude modulation in imagery from MSS bands 4 and 5 is between 65 to 90 percent of that in corresponding bands of Apollo 9 imagery (SO65), and (3) MSS band 5 imagery has a ground resolution between 55 to 75 percent of that exhibited in the corresponding band of Apollo 9 imagery (SO65).

Software techniques for image processing

The present paper describes several software techniques that can be used to get the 'most' out of an image without destroying or adding any information. A simple overview is given of a general image-processing system, a number of systems in current use are listed, and three types of processing tasks are delineated: image diagnostics, subjective enhancement, and quantitative restoration. Examples of each of these types are discussed in some detail, including histogram, differences, and Fourier analysis for image diagnostics; contrast stretching, edge enhancement, and pseudocolor displays for subjective enhancement; and photometric correction, contouring, and geometric correction for quantitative restoration.

Applications of charge-coupled device transversal filters to communication

The paper discusses the computational power of state-of-the-art charged-coupled device (CCD) transversal filters in communications applications. Some of the performance limitations of CCD transversal filters are discussed, with attention given to time delay and bandwidth, imperfect charge transfer efficiency, weighting coefficient error, noise, and linearity. The application of CCD transversal filters to matched filtering, spectral filtering, and Fourier analysis is examined. Techniques for making programmable transversal filters are briefly outlined.

On several aspects and applications of the multigrid method for solving partial differential equations

Several aspects of multigrid methods are briefly described. The main subjects include the development of very efficient multigrid algorithms for systems of elliptic equations (Cauchy-Riemann, Stokes, Navier-Stokes), as well as the development of control and prediction tools (based on local mode Fourier analysis), used to analyze, check and improve these algorithms. Preliminary research on multigrid algorithms for time dependent parabolic equations is also described. Improvements in existing multigrid processes and algorithms for elliptic equations were studied.

White-dwarf variability and the rotation of g-modes

The multiperiodic behavior clearly evident after Fourier analysis of many DA white-dwarf light curves is interpreted as arising from outbursts whose timing is regulated by the rotation and oscillation of the star. A model is proposed on the basis of three main assumptions: (1) a broad array of g-mode oscillations is taking place all the time in DA white-dwarf variables; (2) slow rotation permits most of the g-modes to couple and form a small group of nonlinear modes, each characterized by one of the indices of the spherical harmonic functions involved; and (3) the observed brightenings of the star are produced by upwelling of convection on a large horizontal scale when the antinodes of the nonlinear oscillation patterns periodically rotate into alignment and cause a temporary local enhancement of energy per unit volume. This model is used to match precisely almost every strong periodicity observed in the complex light curves of the DA white dwarfs G207-9, G38-29, G29-38, and HL Tau 76. If the model has been applied correctly, the results indicate that all four of these variables are rotating slowly with periods in the range from 250 to 500 sec.

Integral equation formulation for probe corrected far-field reconstruction from measurements on a cylinder

A method has been developed for far-field evaluation from measurements taken on a cylinder. The antenna and probe fields are represented by superpositions of plane waves, and two integral equations are derived whose functions are the elevation and azimuthal components of the antenna pattern. The known components are the measurements taken by either two probes or a single probe with two geometrical orientations. The convolutional nature of the integral equations makes Fourier analysis techniques applicable to a straightforward solution and an efficient computational procedure. Good agreement has been found between experimental and reconstructed patterns for both nominal and cross polarized field components.

High-latitude field-aligned current sources and induced electric fields

Using a simple, planar model of the high latitude ionosphere with an enhanced conductivity auroral ring, the electric potential is computed for a pair of field-aligned current sheets inferred from observations. The relationship of various characteristics of the electric potential pattern to features of the field-aligned current distribution are elucidated in the context of a generalized field-aligned current Fourier analysis. On the basis of the analysis and observations to date, it is concluded that boundary layer dynamo action is the prevalent mechanism in the solar wind/magnetosphere/ionosphere interaction.

A spectral filter for ESMR's sidelobe errors

Fourier analysis was used to remove periodic errors from a series of NIMBUS-5 electronically scanned microwave radiometer brightness temperatures. The observations were all taken from the midnight orbits over fixed sites in the Australian grasslands. The angular dependence of the data indicates calibration errors consisted of broad sidelobes and some miscalibration as a function of beam position. Even though an angular recalibration curve cannot be derived from the available data, the systematic errors can be removed with a spectral filter. The 7 day cycle in the drift of the orbit of NIMBUS-5, coupled to the look-angle biases, produces an error pattern with peaks in its power spectrum at the weekly harmonics. About plus or minus 4 K of error is removed by simply blocking the variations near two- and three-cycles-per-week.

Evidence for vertical motions in the equatorial middle atmosphere

The Diurnal Experiment, which took place in March 1974, offers a unique data set for use in studying vertical velocities in the equatorial stratosphere and mesosphere. Application of the standard thermodynamic vertical velocity equation along with a generalized thermal wind relation reveals magnitudes of vertical velocities ranging from 1-2 cm/s in the lower stratosphere to 10-15 cm/s in the lower mesosphere. Diurnal and semidiurnal tidal modes are quite apparent and, in agreement with tidal theory, the amplitudes of the oscillations increase with height. Inspection of time cross sections and use of Fourier analysis indicates vertical wavelengths on the order of 8-16 km. These results suggest that modification of temperature and wind profiles in the stratosphere and lower mesosphere on an hourly basis can be quite significant. The analysis also suggests the presence of unresolved vertical winds on both longer and shorter time scales than the principal tidal components.

Two-dimensional representations of axisymmetric fields for computer calculations

An accurate representation of axisymmetric fields has been devised by extending the method of ideal current loops to off-axis fields. It is assumed that the data to be simulated are available through measurements or through a solution of a boundary value problem. The method provides an algebraic expression for the fields throughout a two-dimensional region of interest and eliminates the need for the axial expansion formula in approximating off-axis fields. The use of Gaussian and other functions as alternatives to the coil function is proposed. Examples of the technique in simulating a periodic permanent magnet (PPM) focusing field are presented and compared with a Fourier analysis of the problem.

Light curve of the optical counterpart of 2A0311-227

Visual and blue light curves are presented for the optical counterpart of the X-ray source 2A0311-227. This system, which is the newest member of the AM Herculis class of binaries, has an orbital period of 81 minutes which also modulates the visual light curve. A Fourier analysis of the data has revealed the presence of a 6-minute oscillation, at least in the visual light curve. Whether or not it is also present in the blue light curve is unclear.

Seasonal variation of radiance variances from satellite observations Implication of seasonal variation of available potential energy in the stratosphere

Nimbus 5 satellite radiances for the period 1973-74 are used to examine the seasonal variation of available potential energy in the stratosphere in order to provide a further observational basis for a long-term numerical simulation of stratospheric circulation. The maximum value of stratospheric zonal available potential energy, A(Z), in the upper and middle stratosphere shows pronounced variations between winter and summer, while little variation occurs in the lower stratospheric A(Z). The aperiodic occurrence of sudden warmings complicates the seasonal variation of A(Z) and A(E) (eddy available potential energy) in the stratosphere, making the energetics irregular. Time-Fourier analysis reveals that the primary variation of A(Z) and A(E) in the stratosphere is annual and semiannual, respectively.

Discovery of X-ray pulsations from 2S 1417-624

X-ray pulsations having a period of 17.64 sec are detected from the hard, variable galactic X-ray source 2S 1417-624. It is noted that the pulsations were found through a Fourier analysis of 40 satellite orbits of data taken with the rotation modulation collimators aboard SAS 3 in July 1978. The pulse profile shows detailed interpulse structure that is similar in character to the pulse profiles of 4U 0900-40 and A0535+26. Significant changes in pulse period are detected over the eight-day observing interval. It is suggested that these changes may be the result of a large intrinsic spin-up rate for the neutron star or from binary orbital motion, with orbital periods longer than approximately 15 days.

Planetary-scale wave structure in the Martian atmosphere

Wave-like perturbations are found in the Mariner 9 IRIS atmospheric temperature data during late Northern Hemisphere winter in a latitude band between 45 deg N and 65 deg N. The nature of the data base prevents a unique separation of spatial and temporal behavior, but Fourier analysis of the data constrains the waves to discrete combinations of planetary wavenumber and period. One major spectral component possesses a meridional amplitude cross section with a maximum near the 1 mbar level at 60 deg N and is strongly correlated with the circumpolar jet observed in thermal winds calculated from the mean meridional temperature cross section. This feature is consistent with the low-wavenumber baroclinic waves observed in Viking Lander data, and the vertical structure reflects the behavior anticipated for a vertically penetrating quasi-geostrophic disturbance. Other possible origins for the wave cannot be ruled out, however. Among these is a stationary wave forced by wavenumber-2 topographic relief.

Further photometric observations of 2A 0311-227

Simultaneous V, B, and U photometry is presented for the AM Herculis type system 2A 0311-227. A Fourier analysis has failed to detect the 6 minute quasi-periodic oscillation reported earlier. It has, however, revealed the presence of oscillations at 20.2 and 13.7 minutes. These are interpreted in terms of a nonsinusoidal light curve. U, B, and V light curves are given and discussed in terms of current models for AM Her systems. B-V and U-B color curves are also presented, as is the behavior of the system in the color-color plane.
