The distribution coefficients of Zr and Nb have been found between armalcolite, ilmenite, clinopyroxene, rutile, plagioclase, and a coexisting high-Ti mare basalt melt in the 1105-1128 C temperature range. Henry's Law is not broken over the compositional range evaluated. The distribution coefficients of clinopyroxene are strongly dependent on melt and crystal compositions. The Al2O3 activity in the melt is a strong controlling parameter. It is concluded that: (1) Apollo 11 (low K) and Apollo 17 high-Ti mare basalts may have been generated by the partial melting of an ilmenite-rich cumulate, (2) Apollo 11 (high K) basalts may have been generated by a small amount of partial melting of a more fractionated ilmenite-rich cumulate, (3) KREEP magmas may have been formed as residual melts produced by fractional crystallization of the lunar magma ocean, and (4) anomalous (type II) MOR basalts may have been generated by small degrees of partial melting of a relatively undepleted mantle with clinopyroxene remaining in the residium.
The paper surveys the geology of the Taurus-Littrow valley which is located in a graben that is radial to Mare Serenitatis. The basalt fill is characterized; basalt extrusion in the valley continued until about 3.7 b.y. ago and was quickly followed by deposition of glass beads that formed a mantling unit of probable pyroclastic origin. The glass-bead unit in combination with the overlying regolith forms an unconsolidated surficial deposit with an average thickness of about 14 m. The components of the regolith are described. It is thought that most of the craters are part of a secondary cluster formed by projectiles from Tycho. Age estimates for the central cluster and the light mantle are presented.

Previous techniques for fabricating rigid fire-resistant polyimide foams by compressing already-foamed precursor have been supplanted by one-step constrained-rise process. Precursor mixed with reinforcing fillers is placed between rigid substrates that constrain expansion of foam as it is heated by microwave energy. Process works for both liquid and powder precursors and can also be adapted to attach woven fiberglass skins at same time prcursor is being foamed.
An Rb-Sr isotopic analysis of deep-sea spherules (DSS) from the Pacific, vesicular iridium-rich glassy objects (VIRGO) from an Antarctic-Ocean diatomaceous-ooze core, and equigranular objects (EGO) associated with or included in VIRGO, is reported. The techniques of sample collection, preparation, chemical analysis, and isotopic analysis (by mass spectrometry) are described in detail, and the results are presented in tables. The Sr-87/Sr-86 determination has a precision of 1-2 percent in microsamples of 2-8 x 10 to the 11th Sr atoms. The DSS are found to have Sr concentrations and Sr-87/Sr-86 (0.730-0.757) typical of chondritic meteorites. Extreme Rb depletion is attributed to volatization during meteoroid atmospheric heating. The VIRGO, while having major-element compositions like that of meteorites and high Ir levels suggesting extraterrestrial origin, have Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.703-0.705; and the associated EGO has Sr-87/Sr-86 = 0.701 + or - 0.001, typical of MORB or basaltic achondrites. Hence their extraterrestrial origin is not proved, and some lithic component other than the EGO must be the source of the high Ir concentration.
The geology of Venus is discussed. The approximate age of the surface and the relative importance of large scale volcanic, tectonic and sedimentary processes are not known. Venus holds a very important role in comparative planetology. The investigation of comparable environments to Venus to test ideas of landform development on that planet are proposed.
The study of cosmic dust can provide useful data in the investigation of the origin of the Earth and the evolution of celestial bodies. Three types of cosmic dust (ferriginous, siliceous, and glassy) were discovered in the seafloor sediments near China. Their chemical composition and microstructure were examined by X-ray diffraction, fractography, and electron microscopy. The major mineral in an iron-containing cosmic dust is magnetite. The silicate spheres contain sundry metals and metal oxides. Glassy microtektites are similar in composition to tektites, and are found in all the major meteorite areas worldwide.
According to preliminary examination of the data, out of 179 data channels that were onboard the aircraft in support of the seat experiments, there is data from 168. There was somewhat more severe environment imposed in the structure of the obstacles than by the ground impact. Therefore, both ground impact and obstacle impact are of interest for crashworthiness experiments. Most of the data channels that were studied are fairly consistent with the physical evidence: they show acceleration levels that are reasonable, and in many cases these integrate out to a reasonable velocity change. Finally, from observation thus far, the ground impact did not fail or significantly damage any seat. Nor did any of the energy absorbers in the modified seats extend. The accelerations do not appear high enough and/or energetic enough to cause this to happen. At this time, the onboard films have not been studied; only some videotape have been viewed. Some of the seats were so badly damaged by the fire that any failures which might have occurred were obscured. A close examination of the onboard films using a stop-action projector will allow a more thorough evaluation.
Static crushing tests were conducted on four different beam concepts; honeycomb sandwich, sine-wave and two integrally stiffened designs. The sine-wave beams, depending upon specimen geometry, has the highest energy absorption potential of the four concepts evaluated. All beam designs produced a progressive crushing mode similar to tube specimens. The energy absorption capability of sine-wave beam specimens were predictable from results of circular cross section tubes. A comparison of energy absorption capability was made between integrally stiffened beams fabricated from graphite/epoxy, Kevlar-49/epoxy and aluminum. The energy absorption capability of the graphite/epoxy integrally stiffened beams exceeded both the Kevlar-49/epoxy and aluminum integrally stiffened beams. The energy absorption potential of composite structures is between five and ten times that of comparable metallic structure.
The threshold mass for the unambiguous spectroscopic detection of low mass companions to solar type stars is defined here as the time when the maximum acceleration in the stellar radial velocity due to the Doppler reflex of the companion exceeds the apparent acceleration produced by changes in convection. An apparent acceleration of 11 m/s/yr in integrated sunlight was measured using near infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy. This drift in the apparent solar velocity is attributed to a lessening in the magnetic inhibition of granular convection as solar minimum approaches. The threshold mass for spectroscopic detection of companions to a one solar mass star is estimated at below one Jupiter mass.

The Sudbury structure in Ontario, Canada, is one of the oldest and largest impact structures recognized in the geological record. It is also one of the most extensively deformed and volcanically modified impact structures on Earth. Although few other terrestrial craters are recognized as volcanically modified, numerous impact craters on the Moon have been volcanically and tectonically modified and provide possible analogs for the observed pattern of modification at Sudbury. We correlate the pattern of early deformation at Sudbury to fracture patterns in two alternative lunar analogs and then use these analogs both to estimate the initial size of the Sudbury structure and to model the nature of early crater modification at Sudbury.
Although crater modification on the Earth, Moon, and Mars results from surface erosion and crater infilling, a significant number of craters on the Moon also exhibit distinctive patterns of crater-centered fracturing and volcanism that can be modeled as the result of igneous crater modification. Here, we consider the possible effects of Venus surface conditions on this model, describe two examples of such crater modification, and then briefly discuss the constraints these craters place on conditions at depth.

Different regions on Mars appear to have low-albedo intracrater deposits that have distinct regional thermophysical and/or aeolian dune characteristics. Thermal inertia derived from a carefully selected set of Viking infrared thermal mapper observations of the dark features obtained in 1977-1978 supports this conclusion. The observed similarities and differences among dark intracrater features on Mars is probably a function of the combined influences of sand availability and regional wind conditions.
This report consolidates research carried out at Clemson University and Stanford University where a series of measurements were undertaken to identify the man-made radiation present in four bands used by rather different services, namely, L1 Band (1563.42 1587.42 MHz), the Unified S-Band (2025 2110 MHz), the 2.4 GHz Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) Band (2400 2482.50 MHz), and the 23.6-24.0 GHz Passive Sensing Band. Results show that there were distinctive differences in the measurement data in the frequency bands, which should be expected based on the function/regulation associated with each. The GPS L1 Band had little to none terrestrial man-made sources, but the ISM 2.4 GHz Band had a large number of man-made sources regardless of the site and the time. The Unified S Band showed mixed results depending on the sites. The Passive Sensing Band does not contain appreciable man-made radiation.
