Terminal Strip Facilitates Printed-Circuit Board Changes

Laminanted copper and polyimide terminal strip makes it easy to modify printed-circuit (PC) board, after board has been fabricated. When epoxied over conductors or insulating portion of PC board, strip provides series of solder-coated copper conductor pads to which integrated-circuit leads are soldered for functional changes. Terminal strips accommodate leads on dual inline IC package or as staggered single or multiple leads on planar mounted flatpacks.

Study of and proposals for the correction of errors in a radar ranging device designed to facilitate docking of a teleoperator maneuvering system

A frequency modulated continuous wave radar system was developed. The system operates in the 35 gigahertz frequency range and provides millimeter accuracy range and range rate measurements. This level of range resolution allows soft docking for the proposed teleoperator maneuvering system (TMS) or other autonomous or robotic space vehicles. Sources of error in the operation of the system which tend to limit its range resolution capabilities are identified. Alternative signal processing techniques are explored with emphasis on determination of the effects of inserting various signal filtering circuits in the system. The identification and elimination of an extraneous low frequency signal component created as a result of zero range immediate reflection of radar energy from the surface of the antenna dish back into the mixer of the system is described.

Channel simulation to facilitate mobile-satellite communications research

The mobile-satellite-service channel simulator, which is a facility for an end-to-end hardware simulation of mobile satellite communications links is discussed. Propagation effects, Doppler, interference, band limiting, satellite nonlinearity, and thermal noise have been incorporated into the simulator. The propagation environment in which the simulator needs to operate and the architecture of the simulator are described. The simulator is composed of: a mobile/fixed transmitter, interference transmitters, a propagation path simulator, a spacecraft, and a fixed/mobile receiver. Data from application experiments conducted with the channel simulator are presented; the noise converison technique to evaluate interference effects, the error floor phenomenon of digital multipath fading links, and the fade margin associated with a noncoherent receiver are examined. Diagrams of the simulator are provided.

Facilitating information transfer in the EOS era

A simple interactive demonstration program has been written in C to allow a user to input data field descriptions as label format. This program generates a full RECFMT (record format) description and the complete transfer syntax description notation (TSDN) file. It is intended that this program be upgraded to operational quality and be made available to users to simplify the description and TSDN file construction task. The total set of capabilities, from the standard formatted data unit packaging of related files and consistent segment structures, through the type definition techniques and the call server, will constitute a unique tool for the systematic transfer of data. This software on each end may be independent, one end from the other. With it available, local software that will be needed to convert user files to and from the canonical interface will be appreciably simplified.

Computation of the unsteady facilitated transport of oxygen in hemoglobin

The transport of a reacting permeant diffusing through a thin membrane is extended to more realistic dissociation models. A new nonlinear analysis of the reaction-diffusion equations, using implicit finite-difference methods and direct block solvers, is used to study the limits of linearized and equilibrium theories. Computed curves of molecular oxygen permeating through hemoglobin solution are used to illustrate higher-order reaction models, the effect of concentration boundary layers at the membrane interfaces, and the transient buildup of oxygen flux.

New remote sensing techniques facilitate study of earth's far-flung volcanos

The study of volcanos using remote sensing is discussed. The dynamics of volcanic eruptions and the interactions between volcanos and the atmosphere and ecosphere are examined. Remote sensing equipment can effectively detect mud flows, pyroclastic falls, debris avalanches, lava flows, and hazards to aircraft from eruption plumes. Consideration is given to the use of thermal IR imaging, weather satellites, and polar-orbiting satellites to study such features as lava flow, silica content, and SO2 distribution.

Facilitating researcher use of flight simulators

Researchers conducting experiments with flight simulators encounter numerous obstacles in bringing their ideas to the simulator. Research into how these simulators could be used more efficiently is presented. The study involved: (1) analyzing the Advanced Concepts Simulator software architecture, (2) analyzing the interaction between the researchers and simulation programmers, and (3) proposing a documentation tool for the researchers.

Segmentation of multifrequency polarimetric radar images to facilitate the inference of geophysical parameters

An unsupervised clustering algorithm is used to segment multifrequency polarimetric radar data from the NASA/JPL airborne SAR (synthetic aperture radar). Twenty-two parameters are evaluated for their discriminatory capability for each pixel of an image. A clustering analysis is then performed using different subsets of these parameters. This analysis relies on data taken as part of an intensive field experiment during the summer of 1988 in the vicinity of the Pisgah lava flow in the Mojave Desert in southern California. As part of the experiment, extensive ground truth was acquired, including dielectric constant and topography measurements. Segmentation results show good agreement with these measurements.

Flight systems to facilitate deployment and on-orbit operations of the upper atmosphere research satellite

UARS flight systems are designed to ensure mission success during the NSTS Orbiter deployment of the UARS Observatory. The Orbiter and its crew capabilities allow the UARS project to take advantage of the on-orbit human presence. These capabilities include human intervention and correction of spacecraft anomalies. The UARS Observatory is based on the Multi-Mission Modular Spacecraft to allow for flexible monitoring and commanding of the observatory. The observatory's Solar Array and High Gain Antenna systems are designed to allow for manual release and/or deployment. The UARS Airborne Support Equipment are designed to support the observatory as an electrical and communication interface to the Orbiter; and as work platform to support Extra-Vehicular Activity (EVA). Tools and EVA equipment were designed and developed to assist the crewmember perform the required contingency tasks.

Universal, computer facilitated, steady state oscillator, closed loop analysis theory and some applications to precision oscillators

The theory of oscillator analysis in the immittance domain should be read in conjunction with the additional theory presented here. The combined theory enables the computer simulation of the steady state oscillator. The simulation makes the calculation of the oscillator total steady state performance practical, including noise at all oscillator locations. Some specific precision oscillators are analyzed.

Design and implementation of Ada programs to facilitate automated testing

An automated method utilized to test the software components of COMPASS, an interactive computer aided scheduling system, is presented. Each package of this system introduces a private type, and works to construct instances of that type, along with read and write routines for that type. Generic procedures that can generate test drivers for these functions are given and show how the test drivers can read from a test data file the functions to call, the arguments for those functions, what the anticipated result should be, and whether an exception should be raised for the function given the arguments.
